Be it known that I, ltfancnnn'r B. WIL- LIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residingl at Chicago, in the county of (look and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, ot which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to locks, and more particularly to an impro-vement in a combined latch and lock, its object being to provide a positive locking element within the latch of the lock.
A further object of my invention is to provide a simple practical lock which is generally adapted tor use in residences and other buildings.
Having these and other objects of generall design and utility in view, I have illustrated an operative construction embodying my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a iragmental elevation of my lock in locked position;
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section thereof taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing my lock in open or unlocked position;
Fig. 4 is a sectional detail of the latch bar, and- Fig. 5 is a fragmentary sectional detail of the co-acting knob spindles.
Fig. 6 is an enlarged sectional detail of the connecting ends of the door knob spindles.
Fig. 7 is an enlarged sectional detail taken at substantially right angles thereto, and i Fig. 8 is a transverse section taken on line 8 8 of Fig. 6.
Similar reference characters refer respectively to similar parts throughout the several views.
My lock comprises the usual rectangular casing 10, embedded in the door 11, and is provided with inner and outer door knobs 12 and 13 respectively, terminating in their respective shanks 14 and 15, and adapted to meet within a collar 16 journaled in the lock casing. Lying diametrically opposite one another and integral with the collar 16 are lugs 17, adapted to abut corresponding lugs 18 upon a spring controlled latch plate 19, horizontally reciprocable within slides 2O and pins 21 projecting from the walls of the casing 10, (Fig. 1 A lever 22 is Specification of Letters Patent.

normally held in engagement with lugs 23 and 24 protruding from said plate 19; and pivoted to the lower end ot this lever, at 25, is the latch bar 26, which extends through the casing 10, at 10, and into a keeper 27 in the door jamb, withinwhich and transverse thereto is mounted a lock bar 36. A contraction spring 28 connects the upper end of the lever 22 with the casing of the lock.
The latch bar 26 is a substantial shell, within which reciprocates a bar 29, yieldingly held in the position shown in Fig. 1, by a contraction spring 30. Pivoted at 31 to the forward edge of' and within the latch bar 26, is a pair of grapples 32 and 33, respectively adapted to lock upon said lock rod 36; the inner end of the member is pivoted to a link 34 pivoted to the bar 2.9, and the inner end of the member 33 abuts an inclined slide on the Jtace of the bar 29, so that when the bar is forced forward as shown in Fig. 4, the grapples 32-33 will open, as shown, and thus release their grip upon the rod 36.
As a means for reciprocating the bar 29, I provide a strip of metal ribbon 37, adapted to pass over the reduced portion 14a of the spindle 14 on the inside door knob, being secured thereto by means of a suitable screw 161. The ends of the ribbon pass through an aperture 16L in the collar 16 and through the casing of the latch bar at 38, abutting the end of the bar 29. rihe spindle 14 is squared as it enters the collar 16 so that any movement thereof will be communicated directly to the collar, whereas the spindle 15 is preferably cylindrical and adapted to move freely within the collar 16, without imparting its movement thereto. These spindles meet within the collar and abut, as shown in Figs. 6 and 7. A key 39 (substantially round in cross-section) eX- tends longitudinally through the spindle 14, terminating in a head 39a, as shown. This key is operable from the inside, its head being drawn from or inserted into a splineway 40 in the end of the spindle 15, so that the movement of the spindle 1.5 may be communicated through the key 39 to the shaft 14 and thereby to the collar 16. A lock cylinder 41 is provided within the outer door knob 13 and by means of this lock cylinder a key 42, similar to the above referred-to key 39, is tensionally secured within the spii'idle 15 by means of a contracting spring 42a, as shown. The last mentioned key 42 is provided with a slot in the inner end thereof, which is adapted to receive or engage the head 391L of the key 39.
From the foregoing it Will be apparent i that when a key, such as is designated by the reference character 50, is inserted into the lock cylinder 41, it will bear against the end 'of the key 42, thus forcing it i'nto engagement lwith the headed end of the key 39, which Will permit the operator to then turn the outside door knob 13 and thereby control 'the movement oi' the lock and latch mechanism. However, When it is desirous to lo'ck the door from the outside, the operator Willv insert 'the key as before and by forcing the key 42 against the key 39, he Will force the head 39=l from the splinevvay 40 and then upon extracting the key 50, the key 42 Will be retracted in place through the instrumentalities of the spring 42, thus leaving the spindle 15 to rotate freely Within the collar 16.
VIn order `to positively lock the movement `4of the l'atchhbar 26, l provide a spring pressed plunger or key 43, which passes through the 'casing 10 oit the lock and engaged recess 44-45 in the bar A29 (Fig. 2).
It will now be apparent, that as the colar 16 is rotated, the ribbon 37 yi'vill force the bar 29 forward, thus releasing the fgrapples 32-33 :from the rod 36, and simultaneously therewith the lug 17 'Will bear aga'inst the lug l13, and ivill cause the movement of thelatc'h plate 19, `Wlfiich being connected to the latch bai' 26 by 'the lever 22, by the three point bea-ring l2321l--`25, -Will cause the latch bar to recede fromV the keeper 27, thus unlatching and unlocking the door.

will be apparent to those `skilled in the art to which it appertains, that many modifca- 1 tions may be made 'therein 'and still come Within the scope of the appending claims.
What is claimed is 1. A lock comprising a latch bolt, and means for reciprocating same into and out of a keeper, a transverse rod disposed Within said keeper, and means for locking said latch bolt to said rod,` said last mentioned means comprising grapples pivoted to said latch bolt, a reciprocable bar mounted Within said latch bolt, a link connecting said bar With one 'of said grapple "members, the other lci' said grapple members slidably enga-ging the inclined it'r'ont of said bar, and means for eeiprocating said bar, Within said latch lolt.
