Specificatiouof Letters Patent.
Patented July 2st, 191?.
Application filed December 1,1816 Serial No. 13%,.126.
To all whom itmay concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD BOYDEN, a iti n of the Uni ed States, re idi g a Amsterdam, county of Montgomery and State of New York, have invented {certain new and useful Improvements in Window- Cleaners, of which the following is a specification.
Reference may be had to theaccompanying d a n a d the reference chara ter marked thereon, which form a part of this liecifi t qni ar chara t rs r fer t similar par s n the s v ra figu s th ein.
T P in ip obje t o t e inventi n is o p vid the hinge-c nnected member of an a g lar y adjust-a l st ck fo Win w cleaners and the like, with means for sup? porting t sfi kmembe e at a angl to e h other at ce t n tim oth r times serving to reinforceand laterally sup- POrt the sticlmnemhers thei Poin of hinge connection, when .alined.
Other objects will appear in connection with the following description:
Figure 1 of the drawings isa view in side elevation of a window-cleaning device embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a \vie-w of the same from a position at right angles to that of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 a view similar to 1 ,showing the hinge-connected stickanembers connected and supported by the brace at an oblique angle to each other.
Fig. 4c is a cross-section taken through one of the stick-members and the brace, on the broken line 47-4 in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings wherein the invention is shown in preferred form, 1 and 2 are the members of a window-stick divided at 3, at which point the stick-members are connected together by an ordinary hinge which permits the stick-members to be swung into and out of alinement.
When the stick-members are in alinement, their hinge-connected ends abut upon each other whereby their swinging movement is positively prevented in one direction.
The stick-member, 1, has mounted thereupon suitable cloth-clamping mechanism comprising the clamping-members, 4 and 5, adapted to securely hold between them a cloth or the like, 10.
The clamping-member, 4, is preferably a metal-plate extending at right angles to the stick-member, 1, and attached theretoby screws or other fastening means.
The hinge-member, 5, has a corrugated or roughened clamping face, 15, cooperative with the clamping-member, 41:, and it is mounted upon the stick-member, 1, by means of astaple, 6, driven into the stick-member, 1 withoneleg of the staple inserted through a pivotal aperture in a shank, 8 formed integral with the clamping-member,
A clamping-ring, 7, embraces both the stick-member, 1, and the shank, 8, of the clamping-member, 5, and it is adapted to be forced longitudinally of the sticlcmemher, 1, toward the clamping-members to force the clamping-members together and securely hold the cloth rubber or the like, 10.
011901 oth edges of the shank, 8, of the clamping-member, 5, may be provided with notches or corrugations, 9, adapted to .en gage the clamping-ring, 7, and prevent the accidental release of thoclamping-ring after it has been forced into the proper position to cause the clamp-members, 4t and 5, to securely hold .the cloth, 10.
One end of a channeled brace, 11, is pivota-lly connected at 12 with the stick-member,'1, the axis of such pivotal connection being parallel with the axis of the hinge at 3.
The other end of the channeled brace, 11, is provided with an aperture, 16, extending through both its side walls which aperture, 16, is adapted to register with the several apertures, 13, with a plurality of which the stick-member, 2, is provided.
The aperture, 13, which is nearest the hinge, 3, is at such distance from the hinge that when the stick-members are alined it is adapted to register with the apertures, 16, in the channeled brace, 11, and to receive a cotter-pin. 14, or the like which may be inserted through the registering apertures, 16 and 13, to securely hold the channeled brace in a position parallel with the alined stick-members, and closely embracing the stick-members on opposite sides of the hinge, 3, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
When the brace is thus secured parallel with the alined stick-members, it serves to reinforce and laterally support the stickmembers adjacent to their point of hingeconnection, so that the handle stick has substantial rigidity.
When an angular adjustment of the stickmembers is desired, the cotter-pin, 1 1, is Withdrawn, and the stick-member, 1, is swung upon the hinge, 3, to the angular position in which the aperture, 16, in the brace, 11, is adapted to register with the aperture, 13, in the stick-member, 2, more remote from the hinge, 3, in which adjusted position the brace, 11, is secured by the cotter-pin, 14. V
I have shown the cotter-pin, 14:, and apertures, 16 and 13, as a simple and convenient means for connecting the brace, 11, with the stick-member, 2; but it will be understood that any suitable means may be employed for this purpose whereby the lower end of the brace, 11, can be detachably secured to the stick-member, 2, at a plurality of points at different distances from the hinge, 3, at the nearest of which points the channeled brace, 11, will closely embrace the hingeconne cted portions of the alined stickmembers.
My invention is adapted for windowcleaners, clusters, mops and the like; and different kinds of material may be clamped between the members, 4: and 5, in accordance with the character of work to be performed.
The member, 10, may thus be a mopcloth, dusting-cloth, or a piece of felt or rubber.
WVhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. In a device 01 the class described and in combination, a transversely divided handle-stick; a hinge-connection between the stick-members; clamping mechanism on one member of the stick; a channeled brace adapted to closely receive and laterally support the hinge-connected stick-members on opposite sides of the hinge when alined,
said stick and brace having means whereby one end of the braceis pivotally connected with one of the stick-members, and means whereby the other end of the brace can be detachably connected with the other stickmember at a selected one of a plurality of points at diflerent distances from its hinged end.
2. In a device of the class described and in combination, a transversely divided handle-stick; a hinge-connection between the stick-members; clamping mechanism on one member of the stick; a channeled brace adapted to closely receive and laterally support the hinge-connected stick-members on opposite sides of the hinge when alined, a pivotal connection between one end of said channeled brace and one of the stick-members, the other stick-member being provided with a plurality of apertures at different distances from its hinged end, and the other end of said channeled brace being provided with an aperture adapted to register with the severed apertures in said stick-member, the aperture in said stick-member nearest the hinge being at such a distance from the hinge as to register with the aperture in the channeled brace when the latter is parallel,
and in close engagement, with the alined' stick-members; and a pin adapted to be inserted through theregistering apertures in the brace and the stick-member.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 27th day of November, 1916.
EDWARD E. BOYDEN.
