Above the heads 35, the pins 31 are provided with the heads 37 which are disposed above the non-analyzing locking plates 38 and 39. W' hen the heads 35 are disposed in the seats 36, the upper surface of the heads 35 will be flush with the upper surface of the plate 27 so as to permit the locking plate 40 to coiiperate with such heads 35 to lock the pins 31 in analyzing position.
In the operation of the device, the carriage C will be movable to register its row of pins 31 with any of the rows of perforations 13 in the plates 11 and 12. For anchoring the carriage C at any of these several positions, there are provided the racks 41 and 42 to the outside of the side pieces 21 and 22, respectively. For 005perating with the racks 41 and 42, the pins 43 and 44 are provided which are disposed in the bores of the finger pieces 45 and 46 respectively, being spring pressed against the teeth of the racks 41 and 42, respectively. The finger pieces 45 and 46 are secured to the ends of the plate 27.
The locking plate 40 is slidably mounted on the plate 27, the ends thereof being reciprocally mounted in the recesses formed in the edge of the plates 47 and 48 secured to the plate 27. The plate 40 is provided with a plurality of recesses 49 which receive the stems of the pins 31 when the plate 40 is actuated to lock the pins 31 in analyzing position, the portions of the plate 40 on the sides of the recesses 49 cotiperating with the heads 35 to anchor the pins 31 in analyzing position.
For actuating the plate 40, the bell crank 50 is secured to the shaft 51 mounted between the blocks 2-9 and 30. The upwardly extending arm 52 of the bell crank 50 extends through the opening 53 in the plate 40, and its laterally extending arm 54 has a slot 55 through which the pin 56 on the standard 57 passes. The standard 57 passes up through slots formed in the plates 28 and 27 and the elongated slot 58 in the plate 40.
The standard 57 is anchored against vertical displacement by the rail 17, there bein two studs 59 and 60 extending from sai standard 57, the stud 59 above the rail 17 and the stud 60 below the rail 17. Secured to the standard 57 and extending therefrom is the covering member 61, between which the lower ends of the pins 31 are disposed, the covering member 61 extending from the standard 57 over to and beyond the rail 18. For the purpose of maintaining the covering member 61 and carriage C in alinement with one another, the pin 62 secured to the carriage C extends therethrough and between the covering 61. w
The locking plates 38 and 39 are pivotally connected to the post 63 which is disposed in the middle of the carriage C. The plates 38 and 39 are each provided with a plurality of concentrically curved slots 64 along one side thereof to receive the pins 31 below the heads 37 when the pins 31 are in analyzing position, and to receive such pins 31 as are to be locked out of analyzing position below the heads 35. The concentric slots vary in length, the shortest being disposednearest the post 63, while the others vary in length according to the distance they are removed from the post 63. The slots 64 remotest from the post 63 have rearward extensions 64 to receive the pins 65 just below their heads 66. The plates 38 and 39, at the ends of the slots 64, are provided with depressions to coiiperate with the heads 66 of the pins 65 to lock the plates 38 and 39 in their set position.
The pins 65 extend through the plates 27 and 28 and have heads 67 disposed between the plates 27 and 28 which serve as lower abutments for the springs 68 which are mounted on the pins 65 and are strained between such heads 67 and the plate 27, thereby to normally maintain the pins 65 in descended position.
The operation of the elements constituting the present invention is substantially as follows: The carriage C may be shifted along the rails 17 and 18, the spring pressed pins 43 locating and defining the position of such carriage G for registration of its pins 31 with a'row of perforations 13. In such position, all of the cards thus passed through the machine that have a perforation corresponding to a perforation in the row of perforations in registration will be analyzed, and properly fed into a sorting compartment, while the other cards will all be collected in the rejected compartment.
When the card is positioned between the plates 11 and 12, the cam will be so timed to engage the cam rollers 25 and 2G to depress the frame F and thereby bring the lower ac tive ends of the pins 31 into engagement with the card and permit those pins that find perforations to pass therethrough and the others to rest on the card. Simultaneously with this descent of the frame F, the bell crank 50 will be rocked, the standard 57 being fixed relative to the vertical movement of the frame F, and thereby draw the locking plate 40 to bring its recesses 49 into engagement with the pins 31 and over the head 35 of that pin that has found a perforation and passes therethrough, so that the sides of the plate 40 around the recess 49 engaging the particular pin will engage the head. 35 of such pin and thereby lock it against upward movement. In the further descent of the frame F that pin 31 that is so locked by the plate 40 will then engage the bar disposed below it and thereby ac- For locking any one of the pins 31 outof analyzing position, the plates 38 and 39 have been provided. For this purpose the plate 38 or the plate 39 may be swung around the post 63 by engaging the finger piece 68 or 69 of the plates 38 or 39, respectively, thereupon raising the pin 31 to be looked a sufiicient distance so that its head 35 will be disposed above the level of the plates 38 and 39, and thereupon return such plate 38 or 39 so that it will engage the raised pin below its head 35 and the other pins below their heads 37, as formerly. This raised pin 31 will then be locked out of position for engagement with the card passing between the plates 11 and 12.
It is obvious that various changes and modifications may be made to the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of the invention.
I claim 1. In a machine for sorting perforated record cards having a plurality of rows of data, the combination with a card support having a plurality of openings corresponding to the rows of data on the card, of a carriage, analyzing pins mounted on said carriage for registering with the openings in said card support, means for depressing said pin carriage thereby to pass the pin finding a perforation in the card being sorted through such perforation, deflector actu ating bars disposed below said card support to be actuated by the pin passing through a perforation, heads on said pins, and plates for cooperating with said heads to anchor said pins out of analyzing 1305i? tion.

In a machine for sorting perforated record cards having a plurality of rows of data, the combination with a card support having a plurality of openings corresponding to the rows of data on the card, of a carriage, analyzing pins mounted on sald carriage for registering with the openings in said card support, means for depressing said pin carriage thereby to pass the pin finding a erforation in the card being sorted throug1 such perforatiomdeflector actu ating bars disposed below said card support to be actuated by the pin passing through a perforation, a frame vertically slidable on which said carriage is mounted, heads removed from the upper ends of said pins, a locking plate for passing over the head of the pin finding a perforation, and means for actuating said plate whenever the frame is reciprocated comprising a bell crank pivotally mounted tothe frame and a standard fixed against vertical displacement relative to the frame, the bell crank connecting said plate with said standard so that the vertical reciprocation of said frame will actuate said locking plate.
3. In a machine for sorting perforated record cards having a plurality of rows of data, the combination with a card support having a plurality of openings corresponding to the rows of data on the card, of a carriage, analyzing pins mounted on said carriage for registering with the openings in said card support, means for depressing said pin carriage thereby :to pass the pin finding a perforation in the card being sorted through such perforation, deflector actuating bars disposed below said card support to be actuated by the pin passing through a perforation, heads on said pins, a frame vertically slidable on which said carriage is mounted, and a plate pivotally connected to said frame and having concentric slots to receive said pins below said heads thereby to lock the pins out of analyzing posi tion.
4. In a machine for sorting perforated record cards having a plurality of rows'of data, the combination with a card support having a plurality of openings correspond ing to the rows of data on the card, of a carriage, analyzing pins mounted on said carriage for registering with the openings in said card support, means for depressing said pin carriage thereby to pass the pin finding a perforation in the card being sorted through such perforation, deflector actuating bars disposed below said card support to be actuated by the pin passing through a perforation, a frame vertically slidable on which the carriage is mounted, means for resiliently maintaining said pins in depressed position, heads on said pins, and plates pivotally connected to said frame and having concentric slots to receive said pins below said heads thereby to lock the pins out of analyzing position.
In a machine for sorting perforated record cards having a plurality of rows of data, the combination with a card support having a plurality of openings corresponding to the rows of data 011 the card, of a carriage, analyzing pins mounted on said carriage for registering with the openings in said card support, means for depressing said pin carriage thereby to pass the pin finding a perforation in the card being sorted through such perforation, deflector actuating bars disposed below said card support to be actuated by the pin passing through a. perforation, a frame vertically slidable on which the carriage is mounted, means for resiliently maintaining said pins in depressed position, heads on said pins, plates pivotally connected to said frame and having concentric slots to receive said pins below said heads thereby to lock the pins out of analyzing position, and means for anchoring said pivotal plates in pin locking position.
6. In a machine for sorting perforated record cardshaving a plurality of rows of data, the combination with a card support having a plurality of openings corresponding to the rows of data on the card, of a carria e, analyzing pins mounted on said carriage or registering with the openings in said card support, means for depressing said pin carriage thereby to pass the pin finding a per foration in the card being sorted through such perforation, deflector actuating bars disposed below said card support to be actuated by the pin passing through a perforation, a frame vertically slidable on which the carriage is mounted, means for resiliently maintaining said pins in depressed position, heads on said pins, plates pivotally connected to said frame and having concentric slots to receive said pins below said heads thereby to lock the pins out of analyzing position, extensions on some of said slots, and locking pins resiliently connected to said frame and cotiperatingwith said extensions to anchor said pivotal plates in pin locking position.
7. In a machine for sorting perforated record cards having a plurality of rows of data, the combination with a card support having a plurality of openings corresponding to the rows of data on the card, of a carriage, analyzing pins mounted on said carriage for registering with the openings in said card support, means for depressing said pin carriage thereby to pass the pin finding a perforation in the card being' sorted through such perforation, deflector actuating bars disposed below said card support to be actuated by the pin passing through a perforation, a vertically slidable frame on which said carriage is mounted, means for normally maintaining said pins in depressed position, heads on said pins, a locking plate for passing over the head of the pin finding a perforation, and means for actuating said plate whenever the frame is reciprocated, and a second plate disposed above said first locking plate for locking said P ns out of analyzing position, the pins to be locked out of analyzing position being raised so that said heads will be disposed above said second locking plate.

In a machine for sorting perforated record cards having a plurality of rows of data, the combination with a card support having a plurality of openings corresponding to the rows of data on the card, of a carriage, analyzing pins mounted on said carriage for registering with the openings in said card support, means for depressing said pin carriage therebv to pass the pin finding a perforation in the card being sorted through such perforation, deflector actuating bars disposed below said card support to be actuated by the pin passing through a perforation, a vertically slidable frame on which said carriage is mounted, means for normally maintaining said pins in depressed position, heads on said pins, a locking plate for passing over the head of the pin finding a perforation, means for actuating said plate whenever the frame is reciprocated, a second plate disposed above said first locking plate for locking said pins out of analyzing position, the pins to be locked out of analyzing position being raised so that said heads will be disposed above said second locking plate, and means for locking said second locking plate in anchoring position.
9. In a machine for sorting perforated record cards having a plurality of rows of data, the combination with a card support having a plurality of openings corresponding to the rows of data on the card, of a carriage, analyzing pins mounted on said carriage for registering with the openings in said card support, means for depressing said pin carriage thereby to pass the pin finding a perforation in the card being sorted through such perforation. deflectoractuating bars disposed below said card support to be actuated by the pin passing through a perforation, heads on said pins, racks adjacent to the path of movement of said carriage, and spring pressed pins on said carriage for cooperating with said racks to define the position of said carriage and anchor it in said defined position.
