To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. AmLoTTE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hiattville, in the county of Bourbon, State of Kansas,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sickle-Bars, of which the following is a full and exact specification.

The present invention relates to improvements in sickle bar construction for mowing machines, and one object of the invention is to provide an improved sectional knife bar construction which will efiect economy in repair cost by permitting the' renewal of defective or broken parts without incurring the delay, trouble and expense incident to repairing a continuous bar by the process of welding or the like.

To this end a novel sectional sickle bar construction has been devised, with the parts so arranged that on the appearance of a fracture or other defect, the defective part may be quickly removed and a new part placed in position with but very little delay.

It is a further object to provide a neat, simple and compact construction for the desired purpose, and of an inexpensive nature and requiring no change in the remaining portions of the machine.

lNith these general objects in View, the invention will now be described with refer ence to the accompanying drawing illustrating one form of construction which has been devised. for embodying the improvements, after which those features and combinations deemed to be novel will be severally set forth and defined in the appended claim.

In the drawing- Figure 1 is a plan view, partly broken away, illustrating a sickle bar constructed in accordance with the presentinvention;

Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view of the sickle bar.

Referring-to the drawing in detail, this illustrates the improvements as embodied in a sickle bar comprising the series of bar sections 2 arranged in alinement and 1n abutting relation, the combined length of the sections being that required to accommodate the desired number of knife blades Specification of Letters Patent. and suitable fastening means, as the rivets 6, are employed for uniting the parts in this relation.

For further securing the parts together in rigid form a series of plate members 8 may be applied to each joint on the under faces of the bar sections and the intermediate rivets 6 of the corresponding knifeblades used for fastening said plate members in position as illustrated. These intermediate pairs of rivets 6 may be countersunk if desired, and preferably are so countersunk with reference to the plate mem bers 8 and the latter beveled as shown, so that when the sickle bar is assembled in operative position upon the finger bar 10, proper clearance will be afforded for accommodating the plate members 8 and their rivets within the channel 12 of the finger guards 14.

At the head of the sickle bar the rivets 6 may be utilized also for securing the head member 16 to which the usual pitman connection is made for operating the cutter.

In case of-a broken, worn, or defective part, all that is necessary is to remove the portion which requires to be repaired or renewed, and this may be accomplished by cutting the appropriate rivets and taking out the part in question. The rivets may obviously be readily sheared by simply supporting the sectional bar and delivering a few sharp blows with a hammer upon the head of the blade that is secured by the particular rivets to be cut. The renewal or repair of parts may then be quickly made and the same riveted back in place in the relation shown and described. The expensive and troublesome task of removing a number of knife blades for the purpose of welding a continuous cutter bar, when broken, is obviated, as well as the time required to take the bar to a shop for making a repair of that nature. With the improved sectional bar construction, any needed repairs may be quickly made and attended to right on the ground at a minimum of expense and trouble.
