REGULATOR FR HOT-WATER' HEATING SYSTEMS.
Application led December 13, 1913.
This invention relates to an automatic regu# lator for hot water heating systems, and the inventionconsists in the construction and combination of parts substantially as hereinafter shown and described and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying 'drawings the single figure shows a sectional elevation ofthe regulator. l
The regulating device indicated as awhole by B is `provided with such means internally that vthe pressure ofthe water within the systeml in which the regulator is installed will be automatically.regulatedwithin certain lng respectively in casings 10 and 13 which are integral portions of the main body B; The plunger and 20 disposed relatively above and below the main water inlet or entrance 7 and both valves open downward under the action Vof plunger 10 and the spring 9 which bears on said plunger from above. is shown as confined in a tension 29 threaded uponl of bodyV above the plunger casing or portion10. Y e.
The plunger 13 has a valvei15 rigid therewith and adapted to seat downward upon seat 21 in the casing 21. The toprwall of body B connects the two casings or portions 10` and 21 therein and is provided with a duct 27 leading from one casing to the other for a purpose hereinafter described. A spiral spring 14 is seated on valve 15 in the casing and the extension 28 above the same, as shown, and which extension or cap corresponds to capf29 and serves as a housingv for said spring and normally holds the valve 15 and its plunger 13 on their respective seats, the said plunger being seated at 23 within the casing 13. A small orifice 24 enters said casing from the otherwise open water space within the body B below plunger 13 and serves to take care of excess pres- Specication of Letters Patent.
predetermined limits, and i the novel parts internally comprise 'two separateplun- : gers 10 and 13 in parallel relation and work- 10 controls two valves 17 and y 19, integral therewith andhaving seats 18 Y The said spring 9 tubular cap or ex-V the main portionl ktom of valve 19 exceeds the Patented Ju1y1'7, 191.7.. serial No. 806,368.
sure within described..`
The water passes to the heater, not shown, through the bottom opening or outlet 11 in into said body from beneath andis provided with a comparatively fine wi objectionable particles into the regulating device when expansion of water occurs and backs into the same. opening in the bottom of body B occupied by pipe connection 12 is large enough to permit the plunger 10 and its valves to be removed and replaced through the same.
The opposed end surfaces of the. two valves 17 the opposed surfaces of the valve 17 and the plunger 10V also have the same area, so that the pressure on bothv valves, and the pressure within the receptacle is also equal on the plunger and the upper end of valve 17. The opposedend surfaces of plunger 13 and valve 15 are also of equal area to counterbpalance the pressure from within the regulator. Thesaid plungers and springs, furthermore, are so .ar-l
ranged and proportioned that the pressure of the water entering through inlet 7 Vis automatically regulated within certain `predetermined limits, and the water pressure upon the lower enlarged end of valve 19 is counterbalanced by the pressure of spring 9. It
follows that when the water pressure inthe system through opening 11 is less than the plunger 16 ,and
pressure of said spring the its attached valves will be depressed from `said body as hereinafter fully 1 the reducer connection 12 which is screwed re mesh Y screen 30 adapted to prevent the passage of The'enlarged threaded and 19 are of the same area, and
from the intake 7 is equal their seats and the water will enter theinterior of body B from the service connection7 4 until the system is fully supplied. When they l back pressureof the water against the botspring 9, the water inlet be automatically closed.
pressure offY to the system will abnormal, relief is afforded by the plunger l 13 and valve15, which have opposed faces of equal area alike exposed to the water in body B, and afurther surface at the.
bottom of the plunger is also exposed to the water pressure within the regulator. Plunger 13 is counterbalanced by spring 14, but when the water in the boiler is heated and begins to expand the water Within the regulator will pass through the orifice or duct 24 to overcome the pressure of spring 14 and poundsto be* set to permit valve 15 to open when. a'
"tormay'alsobe locatedinear the heater or c "regulator Iat will tok meet radically different" the said plunger 13 will be slowly raised and valve 15 opened to permit the excess pressure to waste through exhaust S. After suflicient relief the said valve `and plunger 13 and 15 will again return to normal underfpressure ofspring. 14 and the lirst con.- dition be restored. The action is automatic and repeated indefinitely as the conditions arise. Obviously the motion of plunger 13 cannot be rapidas the orifice 24 is compara tively small, and otherwise the chamberor space in` casing 13 beneath 'said plunger is closed; Itfwill alsobe noticedthat' the eX- haustpassageBf is of suchsize at itsmouth as'to extend above val've 15,-so` thatV any slrghftv leak past the valve will drain into the sewer-and:thetransverse duct 27 inthe top` 'wallofthe body Bf'rom above plunger 10 "serves'to' drain therefromintothe sewer in" like'frnannerlv "Set screws 36 over the springsgjand 14-respectivelyserve to fix the tension oft' the springs watery pressure may be` maintained in the systemr eitherhigherior lower than-the pressureinthewater' supply through inlet 7. For'example, springmay be placedunder a tension requiring'a pressure of' say 30 close valve 19,v andispring '14 may pressure o fI about frtypounds is reached.
.The complete regulator is comparatively small ad'inexpensive, and displaces the 4usual" expansion" tanli'and the lines of pipe thereto andltherefrom. and" also ydispenses .witlrother'devices' commonly used inl hotwaterlheating systems, such for example as the s`o'-called"heat generators.' The-regulaboiler in the basement' of` abuilding; orv near the" service connection, andiit prevents the hotlwater in the systemfrom hackinginto the* servi'fcepipes. Theregulator is also en.-r tir'ely' automatiein its operations,- andrequires no attention orI 'care, andf" makes the hott-water heating system; safeand reliable -asawholefThe occupant of the residence y using vthis installation may also f adjust the heating* requirements, such., adjustment being byl the set"4 screws'v to raiseor Ilower the* pressure in the system.
I claim:
1. A regulating deviceA for `hot water heatings'ystems lliavir'iga body withsupply rand relief' openings `and a` water supply "regir lat'ing mech'z'u'nsmfconsistmgfofI a'pair of' so that' any desired44 plunger,

2. Av regulator for hot water heating systelns havinga hollow body with a supply opening. at one side and valve seats relatively'above and below said opening on its inside andl a relief' opening-having a valve seat, valves for said'supplyf openin'gs andl a plunger connectedi with said valvesr` and adapted to be depressed to open said'supply openings, a tubular cap above saidplungen andi a spring in said" cap bea-ring'on said plunger, in combination with a relief pl`unger and valve controlling the said relieflpassage, a tubular cup'above said relief valve, a spring-in saidfcup bearing onlsaidvalve, a duct leading from the interior of said body to beneath said reliefl plungerl and means leading tfrom above said vsupply opening plunger'to a-l point above saidirel'ief valve'4 placingfsaid cups in= communieation with each other.
3; A regulator forl hot water heating 'sys'- tems having a hollowi'body'with a supply opening at one side and valve seats rela:- tively above andbelo'w'said'openingon its inside and a` relief opening havin g* a valve seat; valves-forsaid supply openings and a plunger* connectedE with said valves and: adapted to bedepressedto open said supply openings and a spring bearingi'onsaid in ycombination with f a reliefv plunger, plunger casing and valve controlling the saidrelief passage and ai spring bearingon said plunger and adapted to close said valve and means placing saidibody portion in communication with said plunger casing.
In testimony whereof Iaiiix myfsignature in presence ofi' two witnesses. s
