'WALTER SCOTT DOE, OF KENT, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF T0 AARON L. DAVIS, 0F
, KENT, OHIO.
incassi.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, WALTER SCOTT Don, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Kent, in the county of Portage and State of Ohio have invented a new and Improved PenciLharpener, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. i
The object ofthe invention is to provide a new and improved pencil Sharpener, which is simple and durable in construction, cheap to manufacture and arranged to permit quick and convenient sharpening of pencils of various shapes and cross section with a view to produce pointed portions of any desired length. lin order to produce the desired result, use is made of a plate provided at the sides with guideways, a cutting blade attached to the said plate and extending across the plate with the cutting edge inward and spaced from the forward edge of the plate, the cutting edge being located in a horizontal plane extending above the top face of the plate, and an abutment member slidable lengthwise in the said guideways on top of the plate, the forward end of the abutment member `being spaced from the cutting edge of thev cuttingl blade.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is an enlarged plan view of the pencil Sharpener; l v
Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1; y
Fig. 3 is a cross section of the same on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
' l member;
Fig. l is a plan view of the cutting blade; Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the abutment Fig.` 6 is an inverted plan view of the 1 same; 'and Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the sharpener for sharpening the cutting blade.
The Vbody of the pencil Sharpener/1s 1n the form of a plate 10 provided at its forward end with a cut-out portion 11 and provided at the sides with upwardly and in Specification of Letters Patent.

wardly turned flanges 12 forming guideways 13 on top of the plate 10 at the sides thereof. A cutting blade 14: extends across the plate 10 within thecut-out portion 11 and the cutting edge 15 of the cutting blade 14 extends inward and is spaced from the back wall 1G of the cut-out portion 11. By reference to Fig. 2 it will be noticed that the cutting edge 15 is in a horizontal planea short distance above the top face of the plate 10. The cutting blade 14 is provided with integral side arms 17 extending in the guideways 13 and the rear ends of the side arms 17 are provided with apertures 18 in register with corresponding apertures 19 formed in the plate 10 and its flanges 12. The registering aper- A tures 18 and 19 are engaged by eyes 20 formed on the ends of a U-shaped loop 21 used for suspending the pencil Sharpener from a suitable support. The eyes 20 also serve to hold the side arms 17 of the cutting blade 14: locked in position in the guideways 13 thus preventing longitudinal movement of the cutting blade 14 relative to the plate 10.
The end of the pencil to be sharpened is abutted against the forward end 24 of an abutment member 25 preferablymade in box shape and having its sides provided with flanges 26 slidably engaging the guideways 13 to permit of adjusting the abutment memberv lengthwise on top of the plate 10 according to the length of the point to be given to the pencil, as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 2. The bottom of the abutment member 254 is in the form of a spring tongue 27 bearing on the Lipper face of the plate 10 so as to hold the abutment member 25 in the position in which it is moved by the user of the pencil Sharpener. In order to permit convenient sliding of the abutment member 25 toward or from the cutting edge 15 of the cutting blade 14E, the top of the abutment member 25 is preferably provided with a roughened portion 28 which affords a firm finger hold to allow the user to move the abutment member forward or backward on top of the plate 10.
In order to enable the user of the pencil Sharpener to conveniently sharpen the cutting edgel whenever it becomes dull use is made of a sharpener 30 removably held in the box-shapedabutment member 25. The Sharpener 30 consists of a lback Lplate 3l, preferably made of zinc or other metal, and Qn the top of this back plate 31 is placed a vpiece 32'of wood'or other material "having a top surfaceof an abrading material such as graphite, sand, corundum or the ,like
The abrading piece 32 is held in place 0n -thev .bacl vplate 3l .by having theends 33 of thelatter crimped 'over onto the top of the piece 32, as plainly indicated-inliligsnand 7. The sharpening member 30 is somewhat Vionger than'the abutment member 25xsothat fthe Sharpener extends a distancel beyond `vthe `rea-r -endof ythe abutment member'i 25 yto -permit Lthe :user -to conveniently :remove the Sharpener ffl-'om :the yabutment member s25 -Whenever '\it 4is desired Ito fsharpen -the cutftinge'dge 15 `and Ato Ipermit the user ltov con- -veniently replace r`the Sharpener in `the -abut- =ment frneniberQ when the Sharpener is not -end of thelpencil'to be sharpened is placed 1ron top ofthe cutting blade lflwithithefter- "minal vof the :pencil ini'eontact with i' the -foriin' use.
