To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ORvrLLn D. COTTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Mechanically-0perated Furnaces, of which the following is a speciflcation.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in mechanioally-operated furnaces.
The principal object of my invention is the strengthening and preserving of the ribbed plate upon which the furnace fire arch rests and for which it forms the base. IEX-- perience has demonstrated that the ribbed plate is likely to warp or crack and allow portions of the plate to sag, thus to a greater or less degree shortening the life of the arch and also interfering with the regular discharge of the coal from the magazines onto the grates. By the use of this method of strengthening and supporting the arch plate, I-provide against these defects.
The preferred form of embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, of which Figure l is a front elevational view of my improvement as applied to the type of furnace shown in United States Letters Patent No. 1,018,649, granted February 27th, 1912. Fig. 2 is a rear view thereof. And Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line A-A of Fig. 1, showing .in addition thereto parts of the fire arch and stoking mechanism.
Throughout the specification `and drawings, similar reference characters denote corresponding parts.
In a detailed description of the preferred form of embodiment of my invention as applied to a mechanically-operated furnace of the type disclosed in the above mentioned patent, the numeral 1 designates the magazine bed plate and 2 the feed opening through which the coal passes from the magazines to the gratos. Supported by the bed plate 1 is an arch plate 3 provided with a series of ribs 4l, the upper portion 5 of said arch plate as shown, forming a part of the magazine.
For the purpose of strengthening and preserving the arch plate 3, there is provided a form of construction which will now be described. Above the magazine bed plate 1 the arch plate 3 has an inclined portion provided in its lower side with a longitudinal groove 5"l which receives a metal bar 6. An angle iron 7 or other metallic member, rests upon the ribs 4 of the plate 3, and is connected to the bar 6 by means of bolts 8 or other fastening means. Therefore, the bar 6 and angle member 7 cooperate to strengthen and prevent the warping or sagging of the arch plate 3. In Fig. 3, the numeral 9 designates a section of the arch, showing how it is supported by the ribbed plate 3 and angle member 7 secured to the latter; while the numeral 10 designates the fuel magazine and the numeral 11 a sectionlof the grate of the furnace.
Having described'my invention, I claim:
1. In a mechanically-Operated furnace, a coal magazine, an arch plate having an inclined portion, a countersunk element on the Vlower side of said inclined portion, a coperative member on the upper side thereof, said countersunk element and coperative memV ber each extending substantially the full length of said arch plate, and means for connecting said member and countersunk element at intervals whereby they coperate to prevent the warping and sagging of said plate.
2. In a mechanically-operated furnace, a coal magazine, an arch plate having an inclined portion provided in its lower side with a longitudinal groove, a bar in said groove, a coperative angle piece substantially coextensive in length with said arch plate, on the upper side of the inclined portion of the latter, and bolts for drawing said angle piece and bar tightly against said plate whereby they coperate to prevent the warping and sagging of the latter.
