IMPROVEMENT IN STAPLES FOR HANIES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,350, dated February 6, 1872.
SPnorrIoATIoN.
I, J osnsn Lnrcnwonrn, of the city of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of N ew York, have invented a certain Improvement in Hame-Staples, of which the following is a specification.
Haine-staples have heretofore been made circular in cross-section and of uniform diameter. As the portion of the tug-clip which engages with the staple is of similar form, the surfaces in actual contact, to which the wear is confined, are exceedingly limited, whereby a notch or groove is rapidly formed in the staple, which soon impairs its strength. My invention is designed to remedy this defect, and consists of a llame-staple constructed with a curved recess on one side, forming a seat for the clip, and an enlargement on the opposite side conforming with the shape of the recess, so as to impart the required strength to the staple, as will be hereinafter fully described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure I is a partly-sectional elevation, and Fig. II a partlysectional plan View of a hame-staple and tngclip of ordinary construction. Fig. III is a front elevation of my improved haine-staple, with the tug-clip in section. Fig. IV is a sectional plan view thereof. Fig. V is a side elevation of my improved haine-staple; and Fig. VI represents a hame provided with my improved staple.

A represents the round portion of the tugclip, which engages with the hame-staple, and

B represents my improved hamestaple attached to the haine in the ordinary manner. bis the recess formed in the front portion of the staple at the center so as to envelop the portion A of the tug-clip for nearly one-half of the circumference of its cross-section, as clearly shown in Fig. III. b is the enlargement on the back of the hame-staple Opposite the recess b and conforming' with the shape of the latter, so as to compensate for the weakening of the staple by the recess Z). What I cla-ini as my invention is- In combination with a tug-clip, the hainestaple B, constructed with the recess b and enlargement b1, substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
