IMPROVEMENT IN CYLINDRICAL BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125335, dated January 30, 1555.

Be it known that I, ELrsHA WATERs, of rIroy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented a new and usefulv Improvement in Cylindrical Boxes, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification- Figure l being a side view of my improved box, and Fig. 2 a vertical section of the same.
My invention consists of a cylindrical box composedv of paper sides a b c, combined with wooden ends d e in any well known or usual manner. Said box is superior to a box made wholly of wood or wholly of paper in the following particulars, viz: the paper sides of said box cost less and are much stronger than they would be if made ofwood, and the wooden ends of the box cost less and are lighter, stiffer, and less liable to injury from moisture thanl they would be if made of thick paper. The
sides and ends of my improved box may be combined with each other in any well known or usual manner. The paper sides'of a box cost less than if made of wood, for the reason that the paper can be formed into cylinders on long mandrels and be cut into sections of the proper length by machinery, the economy in labor when the box-sides are thus d made more than compensating for the difference between the cost of wood and paper. The wooden ends of the box cost less than if made of paper for the double reason that wood costs less than paper and is much more easily and economically worked by machinery.
I do not claim in general the combination of wood and paper in the manufacture of all descriptions of boxes, but f Vhat I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
