Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. Fnicx, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of' Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Beamers, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to machinists tools and has particular reference to devices employed for truing and enlarging holes, commonly known as reamers.
The chief obj ect of the improvements which form the subject matter of this application are z-to provide a practical tool of the) character stated in which the cutters are separate members and so arranged that their edges will be uniformly and simultaneously adjusted relatively to the axis of the device; to furnish convenient and efficient means for clamping the cutters in position when adjusted, and to produce a reamer of the design specified in which rovision is made for the ready removal ofp the cutters thereof for purposes of sharpening or repairing the same.
Further objects of this invention stated in detail may be mentioned las follows z-to provide a dirt roof casing for the working parts, thus ad ing to the durability of the device; to furnish ample clearance for the chips; to provide cutters of maximum I strength and designed to retain their edges for relatively long periods; and, incidentally thereto, provide fixed joints as a basis from which to index in the process of sharpening or milling the cutting element.
rlhe above, and other results of minor importance, are accomplished by means of the appliance illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application. rlhe apparatus, described in a general Way, consists of a base or holder adapted to coperate with a mandrel, a series of removable cylindrical cutting elements arranged concentric to the axis of the tool, and mechanical movements designed to rotate the cutting elements for purposes of adjustment and to clamp the working parts in adjusted positions.
Inthe further disclosure of the invention, reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings7 in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views thereof, and in which Figure 1 is a diametrical vertical sectional view taken through the tool comprising the present invention,

Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawings, the vpreferred form of the invention comprises a body or bit holder 10, thc same being substantially cylindrical in contour and formed with a central bore 11 extending completely therethrough. Arranged concentrically of the axial line of the holder are a series of channels or grooves 12, which are circular in form and have one side open to the periphery of the holder; said grooves extending the entire length of said holder.
Located Within the grooves 12 are cylindrical cutting elements or bits 13, each having a suitable longitudinal channel 14; formed in one side thereof, and so designed as to leave a salient lip 15 which forms the cutting edge of the bit. These lips or cutting edges 15, as will be noted, normally extend slightly beyond the outer circumference of the holder 10, in order that plenty of clearance will be had to permit the cutters to accomplish their several functions; fur thermore, the circular formation of the cutters permits of a relatively long usage, a feature not found in the beveled cutter now in common use for the purpose of reaming. The cutters or bits are also capable of adjustment, so that their cutting lips 15 may be extended to different positions relative to the periphery of the holder 10, to produce openings of various calibers.
In order to regulate the cutting adjustments of the bits 13, the same are provided on one end with gear teeth 16 which latter extend into an annular chamber 17 formed in the body or holder 10. Positioned within the chamber 17 is a gear or pinion 18, the teeth thereof meshing with the teeth 16 of the bits 13. It will be evident that upon revolving the gear 18 the bits 13 will be forced to revolve simultaneously therewith, resulting in the equal adjustment of cutting lips 15. The gear 18 is formed With an elongated hub or sleeve 19, provided with a central bore 20 which is concentric with the bore 11 of the holder 10. Surrounding the hub 19 is a bit actuating ring 21 and a locking member 22; the latter being provided with a circular opening 23 to receive the holder 10, and an enlarged head 24 of substantially the same diameter as the holder 10. Set screws 25- are positioned Within openings' 26 formed in the head 24, and said Screws Aextend upwardly through curved slots 27 provided in the ring 21 and are threaded into openings 28 formed centrally in the lower portions of the bits 13. By this construction the screws 25, when tightened, secure the bits 13 and coperating parts in such close frictional contact that the bits Will be effectively locked against movement. ,j TheK ring 21 is suitably keyed to the hub 19l of the gear 18 so that upon the rotaf tion of saidring, the gears vvill be similarly revolved resulting in the adjustment ot the bits 13. The curved Vslots 27 4permit the ring 21 Vto be sutliciently rotated to actuate the gear 18. j
The reamer thus described, When in actual use is attached to a lathe or other machine in the same manner as tools of ordinary form by the engagementof a mandrel Within the bores 11 and20 of the tool. Slots 28 are formed in the hub and locking member so that the same may coperate With a pin on the mandrel (not shown), thereby permittingl a positive rotary movement to be imparted Ato saidtool. The method of operating the mechanism consists merely in loosening the screws 2,5fso as to permit the ring`21 to revolve; this can be accomplished by .inserting a suitable form of tool into openings 29 formed in said ring. The movement of ring may then be performed so as to give the desired adjustment to the cutting lips 15. The screws are then tightened and the device is ready for operation.

In a reamer, the combination of a. holder having` longitudinally extending recesses, cutters rotatably mounted in said recesses and provided with gear teeth, an annular gear rotatably mounted on the holder and in meshing engagement with saidjgear teeth, means upon the holder tor holding` said gear from longitudinal movement in one direction, an actuating ring connected vvith the gear, a locking member fixed to the holder and arranged to hold the` gear from longitudinal movement in the opposite direction, and clamping screws in threaded engagement With the cutters, and extending through the actuating ring and locking member, Vsaid screws being adjustable to clamp and release the parts andbeing in loose engagement With thev actuating ring to permit independent rotation of the latter when released. In a reamer, the combination of a Lesen holder having peripheral seats or recesses, cutters revolubly mounted therein, a gear revolubly mounted on the holder and meshing with the cutters for simultaneously adjusting the same, and means for engaging and holding the cutters against longitudinal displacement, and for clamping the cutters and gear in adjusted position, said means being operative to free the gear and cutters for turning motions.

In a reamer, the combination of a holder having peripheral recesses, cutting elements rotatably mounted in said recesses and provided With gear teeth, a gear rotatably mounted upon the holder and meshing with said gear teeth, said gear having elongated slots therein, and fastening elements extending through said slots and engaging the cutting elements to retain the same in position, said fastening elements being adjustable to positions for respectively locking the gear and cutting elements against ro1 tation and for freeing the same for rotation.
11. In a reamer, the combination With a holder, of cutting elements rotatably mounted in the holder, a rotatable gear for rotating said cutting elements, and means for locking the gear to the holder.
