ALEXANDER RAN DOL, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO HIM SELF, ROBERT J. GRIER, AND WILLIAM KENNEDY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN PAINT ANDVARNISH BRUSHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,293, dated January 30, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER BANDOL, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and usef'ul Improvements in Composition for Fillin Paint and Varnish Brushes; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accoml'ianying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in a filling for paint, varnish, or other brushes made of plastic material, said material not only being plastic when put in, but remaining always in that state, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertai-ns to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which represents a paintbrush, partly in section.
A represents the handle; B, the bristles; C, the wire wrapping; and D, the lling of a paint, varnish, or other similar brush. The filling D is ordinarily made of some hard, brittle material, or of some soft materia-l which hardens after it is putin. I propose to use for that purpose some material which is not only plastic when put in but always remains in that state, so that one or more nails may be driven into the same. Before using a brush a painter sometimes bridles it, so as to spread it, and for this purpose a couple of nails may be driven into the filling so as to fasten the string or wire with which the brush is bridled to said nails. fith a hard or brittle material this would not be possible, but by making the filling of some plastic material it can be done very readily.
Various materials or compositions may be used for this filling-or instance, a composition of one-third bees-wax or other fatty substance coinbined with two-thirds resin and as much saw-dust as this will absorb. This composition also gives the brush the appearance as if the bristles extended all the way up to the upper edge of the wire wrapping.
I do not Wish to be understood as confining myself to the above composition, as any material of a plastic nature may be used.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As an article of manufacture, a paint or other brush, consisting of the bristles B secured to a handle, A, by the wrapping C extending above the top of the bristles, and forming a recess, I), filled with a permanently-plastic material, all as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 31st day of October, 1871.
ALEX. BANDOL.
