Description

A. NEER.
Improvement in PtmanConnections.
No, 123,285,l Pat'emed'1`n.so,1872.
z www TENT FFME" ADAMI NEER, OF BELLEFONTAINE, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN PITMAN-CONNECT-IONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,285, dated January 30, 1872.
SPEomroATroN. To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADAM NEER, of Bellefontaine, in the county of Logan and State of Ohio, have in vented certain new and usefulIinprovements in Pitman-Connections for Reapers and Mowers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters ot' reference marked thereon which form a part of this speciiication.
The nature of my invent-ion consists in the construction and arrangement of a pitman-connection for reapers and mowers, as will be hereinat'ter more fully set forth.
In order to ena-ble others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing', in which- Figure l is a plan view of the outer end otf a pitman and inner end ot' the knife, with the joint or connection in section; and Fig. 2 is an end view ot' the joint or connection, the knife being removed.
A represents the outer end of the pitmanshaft, to which is riveted a spring', B, the sha-ft aud spring forming together afork, as shown in Fig. l. On the inner side ot' the extreme end ofthe Pitman-shaft Ais a conical pin, a, over which is placed a thimble, O, ot corresponding shape. rIhe knife-heel D, having a tapering or conica-l hole through it, is placed on the thimble C, and the extreme end ot' the springB nts over the end of the thiinble on the opposite side ot' the knife-heel from the pitman-shaft. A bolt, b, passes through the pit-man-shattA and spring B, clamping the two together, and also pressing the piu and thimble into the eye of the knife-heel. A portion otl the thilnble C, at the base, is straight on the outside, while the balance is made bevelin g or conical. The object ot' thus leaving a part ot' the thimble beveling is that, as the beveling part ot' the thimble wears ott', the straight part iills up the eye ot' the knife-heel, and by tightening the bolt b all the lost motion is taken up. The thimble may be made of brass, iron, or other suitable material, and is prevented from turn-- ing on the pin al by means ot' a small lug, t', at the base ot' the saine entering a notch in the edge of the thimble. By this arran gement the pitman-hook or pin a may easily be supplied with a new thimble as the old one wears out.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The thimble O, madev straight on the outside at the base, and the balance beveling or conical, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The lug '1i at the base of the conica-l pin a', in combina-tion with the notch in the end of the thimble O, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
3. The combination of the pitman-sha-ft A, spring B, bolt b, pin a, thimble O, and knifeheel D, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. Y
ADAM NEER.
