PATRICK R. CARE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DRAFT DEVICE FOR STOVES AND FURNACES.
Application filed April 21, 1917.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PATRICK R. CARR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Draft Devices for Stoves and Furnaces, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for feeding air into the combustion chamber of stoves and furnaces to promote combustion of the fuel, and its object is to provide a novel and improved air-feeding means so arranged that the air is heated before it is discharged into the combustion chamber.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the detailed description to follow, and in order that the same may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification.
In the drawings, Figure l is a vertical section of a furnace, showing the application of the device; Fig. 2 is an enlarged section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is an elevation of a valve looking at the same in the direction of the arrow 1 )ointing to the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring specifically to the drawing, 1.0 denotes the combustion chamber of an ordinary hot-air or other furnace having a smoke outlet or draft flue 11 connecting with a flue 12. Extending lengthwise through the flue 11 and across the flue 12 is an air-delivery pipe 13, one end of which extends into the chamber 10 and the other end of which terminates on the outside of the flue 1.2. The last-mentioned end of the pipe is the air-inlet end, and the first-mentioned end is the air-outlet end, the air being thus discharged into the combustion chamber. The inlet end of the pipe is fitted with a pivoted valve plate 14 adjustable to control the admission of air. The plate may also be swung to completely close the inlet end of the pipe and thus shut off the flow of air to the combustion chamber.
In the flue 11 is a suitable support 15 for Specification of Letters Patent.

the pipe 13, the latter being slidably held for a purpose to be presently described.
Inside the combustion chamber 10, the pipe 13 carries a damper plate 16 adapted to cover and uncover the inlet end of the flue 11 by sliding the pipe in the direction of its length. hen the pipe is slid forward or inward, the damper moves away from the inlet end of the flue, and upon sliding the pipe outward the proper distance, the damper seats over the inlet end of the fine and closes the same.
The flue 12 has a bottom draft connection 17 with the furnace, below the grate 18 thereof.
Upon starting the fire, the pipe 18 will be operated to open the damper 16, to enable the smoke and gases to escape directly through the flue 11, and after the fire has started, the damper 16 may be closed to obtain a down draft through the bottom connection 1.7. The hot gases and smoke passing through the fines 11 and 12 keep the pipe 13 hot, and the air flowing therethrough is therefore heated before it is discharged into the combustion chamber 10 above the bed of fuel. After the fire is going, complete combustion of all gases above the fuel 'bed is obtained by the air delivered into the combustion chamber.
By feeding heated air to the combustion chamber, the stove or furnace heats more uniformly with different kinds of drafts and a maximum number of heat units is obtained from the fuel, resulting in a saving of fuel, less clinkers, ashes, soot, and smoke, the latter being consumed. The device can be used on stoves and furnaces, as well as hot water heaters and steam boiler furnaces. The device also tends to cool the smoke pipe or flue, thereby preventing overheating and eliminating the danger of fires.
I claim:
1. The combination with a combustion chamber and a draft flue extending therefrom, of an air-feeding pipe extending through the flue, and having its inlet end outside the same and its outlet end posi tioned to discharge into the combustion chamber, and a damper carried by the pipe for shutting off the fine from the combustion chamber, said pipe being movable for controlling the damper.
2. The cpmbination with a combustion chamber and a draft flue extending therefrom, of an air-feeding pipe extending through the flue, said pipe being slidably mounted in the flue and having its inlet end 10 outside the same, the outlet end of the pipe being positioned to discharge into the combustion chamber, and a damper carried by the pipe for shutting off the flue from the combustion chamber. 15
V In testimony whereof I ailix my signature.
PATRICK R. CARR.
