JOHN C. MOON, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
THREAD-CUTTER.
Application filed May 18, 1916.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, JOHN C. MOON, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thread-Gutters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevational view of my improved pipe threading machine.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of a portion thereof.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view through the clamping devices.
Fig. i is a side elevational view of said clamping devices.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in pipe threading machines, the object being to thread two pipes at the same time.
In a companion application filed by me May 18, 1916, Serial No. 98,323, I have disclosed a pipe threading machine in which both ends of the pipe or rod are simultaneously threaded. This involves the use of a rocking clamping device in which the threaded rod or pipe is moved away from the cutters and the clamping jaws opened to permit the removal thereof and the introduction into position of a rod or pipe to be threaded. During this removal and introduction, the clamped rod or pipe is being threaded at each end. When the clamping devices are rocked, the unthreaded pipe or rod is placed in position and the cycle of operations above described is repeated.
In the companion application, just referred to, the cutting members were necessarily arranged in alinement and rotated in opposite directions. In my present construction, the cutting members are not in alinement but are staggered with relation to each other and, as they operate upon opposite ends of different pipes, they are rotated in opposite directions. The construction of the cutters in my present application and the means for closing then, advancing them, opening them, and retracting them, is substantially the same as in the companion application referred to and therefore such construction and operation need not be described here.
Specification of Letters "Patent.
Patented July 111*, 1917.
Serial No. 98,324.
My present invention contemplates the simultaneous threading of two pipes or rods and consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of means for simultaneously operating the clamping devicesv ing curved recesses in their inner faces to cooperate with the pipes A. and B. to clamp them in position. 6 are links connected with the lower ends of the clamping jaws 5 and to rocking levers 7 the latter being keyed upon shafts 8 which are mounted in bearings in the castings 2. There are two of these shafts 8, one for each side of the clamping jaws, said shafts being independently movable so as to equalize the pressure at the four points upon the two pipes clamped in position. The lever 7 with the links 6 form toggles which, when moved toward the line of centers actuate the jaws 5 to exert pressure upon and securely grip the pipes A. and 13., but when said lever 7 is-rocked in the opposite direction, the aws 5 will be drawn away from the fixed jaws -1- to release the pipes. hen the jaws are open and the pipes are placed in readiness to be threaded, they are positioned against adjustable stops 9 mounted on suitable brackets secured to the castings 2. Each shaft 8 is provided with a rock arm 10 and these rock arms are connected by links 11 to an equalizing bar 12 mounted upon the upper end of rod 13. Rod 13 is connected to foot lever 14 which is normally held up by means of a spring 15 the action of which serves to open the jaws The operation of the device is, briefly, as follows:
The pipes are adjusted in position against fixed jaws 1 after which foot lever 14 is depressed, which action forces jaws 5 against said pipes, thereby clamping and holding them against rotation; after which the handles 15 are moved clockwise to force the rotating shafts 3 inwardly so that their cutters' will engage and thread the opposite ends of the two pipes clamped in position. When the work of the cutters is performed, they are moved outwardly and shafts 3 are then'retracted, whereupon the operator releases the foot lever 14, the jaws 5 swing away from the fixed jaws at under influence of the spring 15, the threaded pipes are removed and other pipes to be threaded, introduced into position.
There are two movable clamping jaws, one for each pipe and consequently there are four clamping jaws for the two pipes, and the equalizing bar 12 will cause all four of these clamping jaws to exert an equal pressure at two points upon each pipe. The amount of this pressure may be regulated by the operator.
I claim:
1. In a pipe threading machine, the combination with a pair of oppositely disposed thread cutters, the same being offset with respect to each other, of oppositely disposed fixed pipe receiving elements arranged between said thread cutters, a plurality of oppositely movable clamping jaws cotiperating with said fixed pipe receiving means, toggle mechanisms connected to said clampingjaws for moving the same, plural means for operatin said to le mechanisms and a e ual- 72 Db 7 .v
izing member connected to said toggle mechanism operating devices.
2. I11 a pipe threading machine, a pair of oppositely disposed thread cutters, the same being o fset with respect to each other, man ually operable means for moving said cutters toward and away from each other, pairs of pipe clamping devices arranged between said cutters, which devices are ofiset with respect to each other so as to permit two engaged pipes to lie parallel with each other with each pipe in alinement with the axis of one of the thread cutters, and toggle mechanisms for simultaneously actuating said clamping devices.
3. In a pipe threading machine, a pair of oppositely disposed thread cutters, the same clamping devices,
being offset with respect to each other, manually operable means for moving said cutters toward and away from each other, pairs of pipe clamping devices arranged between said .cutters, which devices are offset with respect to each other so as to permit two engaged pipes to lie parallel with each other with each pipe in alinement with the aXis of one of the thread cutters, toggle mechanisms for simultaneously actuating said clamping devices, and an equalizing member connected to said toggle mechanisms.
+1, In a pipe threading machine, a pair of oppositely disposed thread cutters, the same being offset with respect to each other, manually operable means for moving said cutters toward and away from each other, pairs of pipe clamping devices arranged between said cutters, which devices are offset with respect to each other so as to permit two engaged pipes to lie parallel with each other with each pipe in alinement with the axis of one of the thread cntters, toggle 1necha nislns for simultaneously actuating said and adjustable stops against which an end of each pipe is adapted to engage. V r
In a pipe threading machine, a base, a pair of oppositely arranged fixed jaws thereon, a. pivotally mounted jaw arranged opposite to and adapted to cooperate with each fixedj a w, means for simultaneously operating the pivotally mounted jaws, thread cutters movable toward and away from the pairs of jaws, and adjustable stops against which the ends of the pipes carried by said jaws are adapted to hear so as to gage the positions of said pipes relative to the thread cutters.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses,
this 15th day of May, 1916.
