WILLIAM G. BENNINGI-IOFF, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIG-NOR TO TAYLOR- WILSON MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF MCKEES ROCKS, PENNSYLVANIA, A
CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
REAM IING AND RECESSING MACHINE.
Applicatiomfiled November 9, 1909, Serial No. 526,970. Renewed August 15. 1913.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 2,1913.
Serial No. 784,973.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, lVILLL-UI G. BEN- NINGHOFF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Beaming and Recessing Machines, of which improvement the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in reaming and reccssing machines for pipe couplings and the like, and particularly to mechanism for advancing and retracting the reamer spindles; and to mechanism for holding the gripper in, any desired adjustment. I accomplish these objects by means of the device hereinafter described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the machine. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 1 is a plan view of the grippers and flexible holder and lever to operate same. Fig. 5 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 6 is a side view of same.
Referring to said drawings, 1 is the frame of the machine upon the top of which are secured pillow blocks 2, 2, 3, 3, in which bearings are formed for the reamer spindles 6, 7 which are driven by the power generated by the variable speed motor 8, the said spindles having a feather and spline connection with the wheels 1 and 5. The shaft 9 of said motor is provided with a small cog wheel 10 which meshes with a larger cog or spur wheel 11 mounted on the shaft 12 which is suitably supported in bearings fixed in the blocks 13, 1 1- secured to the top of said frame. The extreme ends of said shaft 12 have mounted thereon small cogs 15, 16 which mesh with, respectively, the wheel 4 keyed upon the spindles 6 of the cutting or reamer tool 17 and with a small cog 18 mounted on the inner end of the short shaft 19 which is supported in bearings fixed in the pillow block 20,-the opposite end of said shaft 19 has mounted thereon the small cog 21 which meshes with the wheel 5 which transmits power to the spindle 7 whereby the reamcr tools 17 22 carried by said spindles, respectively, are caused to rotate in opposite directions, the
said spindles carrying the reamers are caused to move toward and away from the grippers 28 by means of the following mechanism, v12
The spindles G and 7 are provided with the respective collars 24L and 25, the said collars being formed with annular grooves Within which the rings 26 and 26 are loosely mounted. These rings are pivotally connected to the forked upper ends of shifting levers 27 and 28 which are pivoted at m, respectively, to the framework. The lower end of the shifting lever 27 is connected by the toggle levers 29 and 31 to a shaft 33, and in a similar manner the lower end of the shifting lever 28 is connected by the toggle levers 30 and 82 to the said shaft A foot lever 41 is located under the shaft or abutment 33 and is normally held in a raised position by means of a strong tension spring 38, the upper end of the tension spring being engaged by a ring 37 pendent from the shaft- 33, while the lower end of the said spring is connected to a clevis or a loop 10. A link 34 connects the foot lever to the toggle levers 29 and 31 and a similar link 35 connects the foot lever to the toggle levers 30 and 32. It will also be observed that tension springs 42 and 43 connect the respective shifting levers 27 and 28 to the inner part of the frame, the function of the said springs being to assist the spring 38 in retracting the shifting levers and the mechanism connected therewith. \Vhen pressure is applied to the treadle portion of the main foot lever 41-1 the toggle lovers are manipulated to force the lower ends of the shifting levers 27 and 28 apart, and the spindles 6 and 7 are thereby moved inwardly toward each other. It will be ap parent that the longitudinal movement of the spindles toward each other will be more rapid at the beginningthan at the end of the movement, although the maximum pres sure will be exerted at the conclusion of the movement. As soon as pressure upon the main lever 41 is released, the springs 38, 412, and 43 will act immediately to retract the spindles and move the same back into their original position.
The gripper for holding the coupling or pipe is constructed to receive articles of various diameters, and comprises a pair of jaws 23, one of the jaws being movable while the opposite jaw is stationary. The movable jaw is connected by a U shaped spring member 46 to the end of a swinging arm 45, the said members having a toggle action and serving to force the movable jaw toward the fixed jaw when the arm is swung inwardly. A lever 4a is rigid with the arm 45 and constitutes a convenient means for operating the gripping device. The spring L6 causes the device to firmly and yieldingly grip a pipe or like member placed between the jaws and when the arm 45 is swung inwardly so that the pivotal connection between the said arm andthe spring 46 is below the line connecting the pivotal connection of the said spring with the movable jaw and the pivotal connection of the arm 45 with the frame, the device will be yieldingly locked in position. Upon the completion of the reaming operation, the rea-mers are retracted and the gripper caused to release the coupling or pipe which has been operated upon, the said coupling or pipe dropping into a chute 47 which may: convey the same to any suitable receptacle (not shown) Having described my invention, what I longitudinal sliding movement and designed to carry cutting tools, shifting levers v having operative connection with the respecr tive spindles, an intermediate abutment arranged between the shifting levers, two sets of toggle levers between the abutment and the respective shifting levers, a pivotally mounted foot lever, a pair of links between v the foot lever and the two sets of toggle levers whereby the said toggle levers may be actuated through the foot lever to simultaneously move the spindles toward or away from each other, and means for normally holding the foot lever in an inoperative position.
2. A machine of the class described, including oppositely positioned spindles mounted to have both a rotary and longitudinal slidin movement and designed to carry cutting tools, shift-ing levers having an operative connection with the respective spindles, an abutment arranged between the shifting levers, two sets of toggle levers be tween the abutment and the respective shifting levers, a pivotally mounted foot lever arranged under the abutment, links extending upwardly from the foot lever on opposite sides of the abutment and connected to the respective toggle levers whereby the toggle levers may be actuated through the foot lever to simultaneously move the spindles toward or away from each other, and a spring between the foot lever and the abutment for normally holding the foot lever in an inoperative position.
3. A machine of the class described, including oppositely positioned spindles mounted to have both a rotary and a longitudinal sliding movement and designed to carry the cutting tools, shifting levers having an operative connection with the respective spindles, a shaft, two sets of toggle levers between the shaft and the respective shifting levers, a foot lever arranged under the shaft, a spring between the foot lever and the shaft for normally holding the same in inoperative position, and links between the foot lever and the two sets of toggle levers whereby the said toggle levers may be actuated through the foot lever to simultaneously move the spindles toward or away from each other.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM G. BENNINGHOFE.
