SLIDING BED.

To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, JOHN T. PRICE, a c1t1- zen of the United States, residing at Ellston, in the county of Ringgold and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sliding Beds; and I do herebydeclare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The invention relates to improvements in beds.

The object of the present invention is to improve the -construction of beds and to provide a simple, practical, and comparatively inexpensive bed designed for the use A of persons having tuberculosis, weak lungs or desiring for any other reason to sleep outdoors and equipped with means for enabling it to be readily moved from the 1nterior of a room or apartment to the exterior of the house without necessitating a person leaving the bed while such change in position of the same is being made.

With these and Other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departlng from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

In the accompanying drawings in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, 1 designates a bed designed to slide through an opening 2 in a wall 3 for arranging it either interiorly of the room Specification ofLetters Patent.

or exteriorly of the wall and provided at its inner and outer ends with heads or closures at and 5 adapted to fit in the opening 2 and close the same when the bed is in either position. The closures are provided with flanges 6 projecting beyond the opening 2 and adapted to cover the same. The opening may be formed directly in the wall as indicated in Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings or the bed may be projected through a door or window on to a porch as will be readily understood.

The bed is provided at the bottom with a plate 7 of sheet metal entirely closing the bottom of the bed and adapted to exclude the air and the sides of the bed are also provided with sheet metal guards 8 extending a sufficient distance above the bed clothing, not shown to exclude snow and the like from the same at the inner faces of the side rails of the bed but the bed may be constructed of any other suitable material as will be readily understood.

The bed is supported at the corners by legs 9 and 10 arranged interiorly and exteriorly of the house or other building and adjustably secured to the ends or closures & and 5, by clamps 11 consisting of blocks or plates of metal provided with openings 12 to receive the legs which are engaged by set screws 13. The clamps which are arranged in pairs have attaching portions 14: screwed or otherwise secured to the heads or closures 4: and 5. The legs are provided at their lower ends with horizontal pivots or spindles 15 on which are mounted wheels 16 preferably provided with rubber tires 17 and having anti-friction bearings 18 which may be ball bearings, roller hearings or the like to reduce the friction to a minimum. The wheels are arranged upon rails 19 preferably constructed of angle iron and consisting of two sides or wings, one side or wing being arranged horizontally to form the tread of the rail and the other extending the person occupying the bed leaving his or her position within the same. This will enable a person to dress in a warm room, get into the bed and after having the covers properly arranged be moved to a position outdoors.

The bed may be moved inwardly and outwardly by a nurse or by the occupant and in order to enable this to be accomplished the bed is equipped with a rope 23 or other flexible connection secured at its terminals to the wall 2 at the top of the opening at 24 and arranged on pulleys 25 at the heads or

4 and 5. The rope forms an endless flexible connection and will enable the bed to be moved back and forth along the track. The braces 20 are secured at their outer ends to the outer ends of the rails and they extend downwardly and inwardly to the wall 3. The adjustable connection between the legs and the bed or body of the bed enable thelatter to be raised and lowered to arrange the parts properly with relation to an opening in a wall.
