Be it known that I, GEORGE D. FLANDERs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ellsworth, in the county of Ellsworth and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Plastic Lathing, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention has for its object the provision of a cheap yet efiicient substitute for wooden and metallic lathing used in building construction, and aims to provide lathing slabs or plates formed of cement or other plastic material, said slabs or plates being readily nailed or otherwise secured to the sheathing, framework, or the like, and having intertting means and means for receiving and holding the plaster or stucco finish.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:

The slab or plate l is constructed of suitable plastic material and is preferably of rectangular outline. One edge and one end of the slab are provided with forward or outer rabbets providing the rear or inner outstanding lips 3 iiush with the rear or is a sectional detail of a modificainner face of the slab, and the other edge and end are provided with rear or inner rabbets providing forward or outer lips 2 outstanding from said edge and end of the slab flush with the forward or outer face thereof. These outstanding lips extend around the margin of the slab and are adapted to overlap the lips of adjacent slabs when they are assembled. The slab is provided at suitable points with apertures 4 for the reception of nails, screws or other securing elements, and the forward or outer surface of the slab is provided with parallel longitudinal undercut grooves 5 which can be of any suitable formation.
The present slabs or plates are used in place of ordinary wooden or metallic lathing, the slabs being placed in staggered arrangement and in superposed courses against the sheathing or framework 7. Mortar or other bonding material 8 is placed between the rear lips 3 and adjacent slabs, whereby Specification of Letters Patent.

to bind the slabs together adjacent their rear or inner sides which contact with the sheathing or framework 7, while the lips 2 are spaced from the companion slabs, as seen in Fig. l. The mortar 8 does not extend to the forward or outer surfaces of the blocks. The slabs are secured to the sheathing or framework by means of screws 6 or other securing elements engaged through the apertures 4 and taking into the sheathing or framework. By means of the cement or motar S and securing elements 6, the slabs are securely held in place flush with one another to prevent their displacemenu whereby to eliminate the cracking of the plaster or stucco finish 9 which is applied to the outer grooved surfaces of the slabs. This `finish 9 is applied in the usual mam'ler, and will not only adhere to the rough surfaces of the slabs, but L' will also be pressed into the undercut grooves 5, thus providing key tongues 10 integral with the plaster or stucco finish and locked within the grooves 4, to hold the finish securely in place. The finish will also be pressed within the slots between A'the adjacent slabs, as at 11, to insure of the permanency of the finish, and to assist the tongues 3 in clenching the finish to the slabs.
The present slabs can be inexpensively molded, and readily applied to the sheathing or framework with more despatch and ease than is the case with ordinary wooden or metallic lathing. will be as efficient if not superior to ordinary lathing.
In the modifica-tion illustrated in Fig. 4, the slabs l which have the undercut grooves 5 .are provided with registering marginal grooves 2 for receiving mortar or cement 8 to provide a key for holding the slabs flush. The slabs are attached to the sheathing or framework 7 in the manner above indicated, and the slabs have the finish 9 applied thereto and provided with the locking tongues 10 within the grooves 5.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A lathing structure including a frame, parallel rows of lathing slabs of plastic material resting against the frame and disposed end to end in each row, each slab having an outer rabbet extending along one edge and one end providing inner lips at said edge and end flush with the inner surface of the slab, each slab having an inner rabbet along The present lathing 'fr finish applied to the outer surfaces of the slabs and entering said grooves and the spaces between the outer lips and adjacent slabs.
