Description

L. J. FAY.
SAFETY RAZOR.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 31.1915.
ggg 1 v Patented July 10,191?
ATB AT FIQ SAFETY-RAZOR.
Application filed July 31, 1915.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS Janvrs FAY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of lVatts, in the county of Los Angeles, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Safety- Bazor, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improvement in safety razors and consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawing forming a part of these specifications,
Figure 1 is a side view of the blade holder;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal View of the blade compressor;
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the guard;
Fig. 4 is a plan of the guard plate;
Fig. 5 is an end view of the blade holder;
Fig. 6 is a bottom plan of the blade holder;
Fig. 7 is a view of the blade;
Figs. 8 and 9 are longitudinal sections of a razor embodying my invention, the blade being omitted for the sake of clearness of illustration, Fig. 8 showing the guard withdrawn and the compressor stem unscrewed exposing a large opening in the blade holder in which the blade is dropped automatically positioning itself. Fig. 9 shows the compressor stem screwed up against the blade holder, showing how the blade may be clamped between the plate of the blade holder and the blade compressor stem where it is held firmly and independent of all other means; also is shown the guard released and by a spring forced up against the plate of the blade holder. It will be noticed that the blade is not held in position by the guard but by the compressor. Also that the guard is movable longitudinally along the handle of the blade compressor and that it is independent of all other parts of the razor. That in operation the frame is not taken apart to insert or remove the blade, there being but two parts, the frame and the blade, the blade capable of being inserted in and removed from the frame almost instantaneously and without special care, the opening for the blade being large and without clips, guides or grooves. t
The object of the invention is to provlde a safety razor that can be handled quickly Specification of Letters Patent.

and without special care, in which the blade is held firmly and immovably and which can. be cleaned oil of lather and hair while using without either unscrewing or taking apart, which is done in the following man her: The blade end is inserted in the water and the guard pumped up and down two or three times; this forces a stream of water over the edges of the blade and between the guard teeth, cleansing the razor instantly, and thoroughly.
My razor as shown, comprises a blade holder A, a blade compressor B, a guard C, a coil spring D, a blade E.
In the drawing, Fig. 1 shows the holder A. comprising a plate, A provided at its extremities with cars, A extending at right angles to the plate A and engaging the bar A extending lengthwise of the plate A said bar A being spaced a distance A away from the plate A and provided at its center with a shank A projecting from the bar, said shank A bar A and ears A adapted to slide through the slot C in the guard plate C Fig. 4, and into the tube C of the guard holder C Fig. 9.
Said shank A being bored and internally threaded A to receive the screw B externally threaded on the end of the blade compressor B, Fig. 2, which blade compressor B screws through the threaded bore A in the shank A thereby compressing the blade E between the body plate A and the end of the blade compressor B, thereby holding the blade firmly in position.
Manifestly the razor may be used when in this form, that is to say, with the holder A the blade E placed in the slot A and the blade compressor B screwed up against the blade, holding the same firmly in the holder.
The blade compressor B is provided with shoulder B as a seat for the coil spring D, Figs. 89; also with stop shoulder B ,to engage end of guard 0*, Fig. 8, when guard C is withdrawn to insert blade E, Fig. 7, which is without perforations and preferably of the double edged type and provided with rounded corners E to bring the cutting edge under the guard and shoulder E adapted to engage the ears A of the blade holder Awhen the blade is dropped in the large opening A Fig. 8.
The guard C, Figs. 3-4 is composed of a tube C and made integral with a guard plate C which is notched or toothed C and slotted through the guard plate C and into the tube C, the bar A shank A and ears A of the blade holder A, sliding through this slot C and into the tube C which is recessed with shoulder at C to receive spring D, Fig. 8, which bears between the oppositely facing shoulders C and B of respectively the guard and the blade compresser so that the spring acts normally to press the guard to the position shown in Fig. 9 in which it closely overlies the blade.
Be it understood that I reserve the right to make the blade compressor a tube or solid, also to make the blade holder flat using a non-flexible blade and to make any other changes in the construction which will fall Within the lines of my drawings or claims; also that I own United States Letters Patent No. 1063021 patented May twenty seventh, nineteen hundred and thirteen, and this improvement is an extension of my previous patent.
I claim 1. A safety razor as herein described a blade holder having a plate, means for con necting said plate with a bar spaced from said plate, said bar having a shank bored and internally threaded, a thin blade, a blade compressor having an externally threaded end, engaging the threaded shank, a slotted guard with a tubular extension encircling and longitudinally slidable upon the blade compressor and a coil spring within the extension surrounding a portion of the blade compressor and engaging a shoulder thereof and a shoulder of the extension.
2. The combination with a blade holder having a plate, a bar and shank sliding? pressor for pressing a blade against the plate, a sleeve having at one end a guard, said sleeve and guard fitting over the blade compressor and independently movable longitudinally along the blade compressor, whereby movement of the sleevemoves the guard, and means for automatically forcing said sleeve toward the plate.
