IMPROVEMENT IN CULTIVATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,235, dated January 30, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
A Be it known that I, ADOLF F. (JARLsON, of Attica, in the county of Fountain and in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corn-Plow; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a corn-plow, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention a-ppertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a plan view, and Fi 2 is a 1011- gitudinal vertical section of my corn-plow. Fig. 3 represents a pipe-box used on the axle of my plow, and Fig. 4 is a view of the doubletree.
A represents the axle-tree, to which the wheels B B are attached. This axle is bent up in the middle, and a forked pole or tongue, 0,- is attached near its rear ends to said bend of the axle. Therear ends of the forked pole or tongue G are provided with two small hooks, to a, for the purpose of supporting the plows when raised from the ground. D D are two pipe-boxes encircling the axle;tree between the bead and each wheel respectively. E E are two bowl-shaped collars encircling the axle-tree and also receiving the ends of the boxes I) D next to the wheels. These collars are connected by extensible brace rods G G to the pole. H H are solid forked jaws, to which the plow-beams I I are attached for the purpose of attaching the plows and carriage together. J is a bent double-tree crossing the pole O at right angles, resting on across-piece, K, set between the forks of said pole, through which is insertedabolt or draftpin, 1). The ends of this double-tree are downward, and provided with clips or clevises d d to receive the single-trees L L, and also with extra holes for the purpose of changing the singletrees up or down, thereby regulating the height of draft. The pipe-box D is cast hollow, but in two pieces, for receiving the axle-tree, and has lugs or flanges e e on the front side, provided with two holes to receive bolts. One of these bolts answers as a draftpin and the other assists in holding the boxes firmly upon the axle-tree. These bolts may be changed when it is desirable to change the width of the plows. There is also a raised molding or circumferential flange, f, cast upon the end of the boxing where it enters the bowlshaped collar E, said collar being provided with a corresponding groove to receive the same, thus forming a permanent connection between the box and the collar. By adjusting the bolts in the stay-rods or braces G G they can be lengthened or shortened at will, and by loosening the set-screw h, which holds the collar on the axle, the plows may be moved further out or in, making them wider or narrower, as may be desired, and then held permanently by the grooved device in the collar while the box is allowed to revolve backward and forward on the axle. The forked iron jaw H, which forms the connection between the plows and the carriage is cast with a solid rib in the middle at the rear end, with a recess on either side to receive the forward ends of the beams I I, through which bolts or rivets pass to secure them to their places. The forward end is forked in order to receive the box 1) upon the axle-tree, and extending forward to correspond with the flanges e e on the box, and has holes correspoudin g with theholesin theflanges in the boxes to receive the draftpin, thereby placing the draft-pin forward of the axle-tree. By bending the ends of the double-tree downward and making said bends stitf the draft, when applied to said ends, has a tendency to raise the forward end of the pole, thus relieving the horses necks of the weight of the pole and downward draft, so burdensome in most of the plows heretoforeconstructed.
