lie it known that l, Gann A. KELLOGG, a citizen of the United States, and ar'esident of Batt-le Creek, Calhoun county, Michigan, have invented certain Improvements in Frintiiig-Machines, of which the following a specification. f
This invention relates to certain improvements in printing machines, and more particularly in that class or type of such machinos which are especially designed and adapted for employment for printing webs from fiat forms, and the object of the invention is to provide a machine of this general character,` of a comparatively simple and compact nature, having certain features of novelty and improvement whereby the printing or perfecting of the web may be performed in a rapid and convenient manner and without excessive liability of breakage or tearing of the same such as often 0ccurs during the `operation of printing machines such as have been heretofore in use. i
The invention consists7 in part, in a printing machine having means operable to constantly feed or drive a` web to be printed past a fiat form `and cooperating impression cylinder wherein means is provided for imparting reverse reciprocatory movements to said fiat form and cylinder, and for operating upon the web with said flatform and cylinder during those strokes of the form which correspond in direction with the'travel of the web during impression, for the production of recurrent impressions of said forni upon the web.
The invention consists further in a machine of the character above defined wherein means is provided for eqnalizing the movement of the form during impressions in such a manner as to permit substantially constant :feeding movement ofthe web and dispense with the employment of equalizing devices such .as have been customarily provided heretofore for varying the travel of the web to conform to variations in the movement of the printing form.

The invention consists further in a printing machine of this character wherein both the elements of the printing couple reciprocate in unison but in reverse` directions, and wherein the form is driven at a substantially constant and uniform speed so as to conform to the travel of a web similarly driven, and wherein the reverse reciproeatory movement of the cylinder is utilized for shortening the strokes of the elements of the couple and otherwisefacilitating the operation of the machine.
rihe invention also contemplates certain novel features of the construction, and combinations and arrangements of the several parts of the improved printing machine whereby certain important advantages are attained and the machine is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise better and more convenient and effective duringV use, all will be hereinafter fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully definedin the claims.
In order that my improvements may be the better understood, l will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings in which l have illustrated one embodiment of my invention and wherein- Figure l is a side elevation of the printing machine constructed according to my invention;

As shown in these views, the improved printingl machine is provided with a frame 1 having two sets of reciprocatory web printing and perfecting devices, which are located, respectively, at lower and upper decks 2 and 3, the deck 2 being, in the structure herein shown, so positioned that its printing and perfecting devices travel in paths which extend beyond the paths of the corresponding devices at the deck 3, so as to facilitate access to the Vrespective printing and perfecting devices and at such an elevation above said deck 2 as is calculated to afford space below it for the arrangement of oertain parts of the driving mechanism, so that the length of the machine may be minimized without such excessive increase in the height of the upper deck as might render it difficult to apply forms thereto.
The side portions of the frames 1 are spaced apart from each other at any necessary or desirable distance, dependent upon the width of the webs to be printed, and between said side portions are provided at the respective decks 2 and 3 with oppositely arranged parallel and alined guide members t, 4 which serve as separate parts of the web printing and perfecting devices as will be hereinafter explained, and between the spaced guide portions 1, 4 at each deck 2 and 3 are arranged auxiliary guide members 5, 5, parallel with the guide members 1, 4 and spaced apart therefrom and from each other and so constructed and arranged as to afford effective support for the reciprocatory form supporting members 6, 6 of the printing and perfecting' devices at the respective decks 2 and 3.
As herein shown each of the members 6 is of such a length as to afford, adjacent to its opposite ends, separate form beds 7 and 8 adapted for receiving the flat forms 9 which ar-e to be impressed upon the webs during the printing and perfecting operations, and to provide, between the adjacent ends or edges of said form beds 7 and v8 an unobstructed space or opening 10, adapted in the construction herein shown, for the passages in a vertical direction of the web to be printed, as clearly indicated at ai? in Figs. 2 and 3, the dimensions of said space or opening 10, measured lengthwise of the member 6, being sufficiently in excess of the travel of the member during its reciprocatory movement hereinafter explained, to effectively prevent interference with the free travel of said vertically extended part of the web. Each member 6 is also provided, as clearly shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4 with oppositely arranged lateral tie portions 11, 11 which are extended along opposite sidesv of the central space or opening 10 in such a manner as to rigidly connect the beds 7 and 8 at opposite ends of said member, and 12, 12 represent parallel bearers which are extended upon the opposite sides of the member 6 continually along the parts 7, 8 and 11, 11 so as to afford tracks along which correspondingly positioned bearing surfaces 14, 1a upon the corresponding` impression and perfecting cylinders 15 rand 16 are adapted to travel duri/ng the movement of the beds and cylinders upon impression in a well known way. 17 and 18 represent racks at opposite sides of each member 6 which are outside the bearers 12 one of these racks being adapted vfor engagement with gears 26 upon the respective cylinders 15 and 16 and the other of said racks being adapted for driving engagement with the form rollers 20, 20 adjacent to thefrespective cylinders 15 and 16 and adapted for movement in unison therewith to ink the forms 9 upon the respective beds 7 and 8 prior to each impression upon the web.
Adjacent to the path of thervertical portion x2 of the web which passes upward through guides at opening 10 in the member 6, the auxiliary guide members 5, 5 between the side portions of the machine frame are cut away so as to afford space for the upward travel of the web as indicated at 21 in Figs. 2 and 3 and at opposite sides of the space 21 so provided are extended transverse tie bars 22, 22 which are extended between the side portions of the machine frame and serve for the effective support of the auxiliary guides 5, 5. These auxiliary guides 5, 5 are provided in their upper surfaces with longitudinally extended grooves or channels 23 adapted for the reception of projections 24 upon the under surfaces of the beds 7 and 8 at opposite ends of the member 6, anti-friction rollers 25 being interposed between said projections and the bottoms of the grooves or channels in the auxiliary guides so as to facilitate the reciprocatory movement of Vthe member 6 which is held securely in relation to the auxiliary guides and prevented from rising above the same by a suitable means as clearly shown at 26a in Fig. 6.
The cylinders 15 and 16 at each deck of the machine are supported in a reciprocatory carriage which includes the side members 27, 27 adapted for endwise sliding movement upon the guides t, l at opposite sides of the deck during the reciprocatory movement of the cylinders, these side members being provided with upwardly directed bearings 28, 28 wherein the shafts 29 of the respective cylinders 15 and 16 are mounted to turn and said members are provided with arms 30 directed outward beyond opposite sides of the respective cylinders 15 and 16 and tied or connected together by means ofshafts 31 which are extended transversely across the machine and serve as supports for guide rollers 32 and 33 appropriately positioned at each side of each cylinder 15 and 1G to guide and direct the web lto and from the impression surfaces thereof. The respective side members 27 of each cylinder carriage are provided with parts 3e and 35 engaged above and below the respective guides e, 4L at opposite, sides of the deck whereat such carriage is arranged, anti-friction rollers 36 being interposed between each part and and `the corresponding guide ,4f so as to facilitate the reciprocatory movements of the cylinder carriage during the operation of the improved printing machine.
ln the construction herein shown, the form rollers 20, 20 for the forms at opposite ends of each member G are mounted upon the cylinder carriage at opposite sides of the cylinders 15 and 16 in operative relation to distributing rollers 37 which, during` the reverse reciprocatory movements of the carriage, are alternately presented to fountains 38, 38 supported upon the frame at opposite ends of the path of the cylinder carriage soy that as said carriage is moved in one direction, the `distributing rollers at oneend thereof receive ink from the corresponding fountain 3S while when the carriage is reversely moved, the inking devices at its opposite end receive ink from the corresponding fountain 3S at that end of the path of said carriage.
It will be understood, of courre, that although I have herein shown my invention embodied in a printing machine capable of operation to print and perfect twowebs at the decks 2 andB, and `although such construction and arrangement affords certain important advantages and improved results, and is included Within my present inven tion, the said. invention, considered in its broad spirit is not limited to such duplication of the printing and perfecting devices.
In the structure shown in the drawings, the two webs a; and m1 are led into the ma chine from web rolls which may be located in any convenient situations as, for example, at the end of the machine, and are passed between feed rolls 39 of any preferred or ordinary construeti on, so arranged and driven as to cause a substantially uniform and continuous feediiig movement of the web through the machine. rthere are provided for each of said websm and m1, and appropriate to the corresponding deck 2 or 3, lower and upper guide rolls 40 and 41, below and above the path of the correspondinfr form supporting member 6, and so arranged that thek web from each feeding means 39 is received by the corresponding lower guide roll 40 and is thence directed vertically upward through the space 21 between the frame tie bars 22, 22, and through the space or opening 10 in the form supporting member (5, as indicated at m2, to the uppermost guide roll el. rlhence the web is directed horizontally above the path of said member G to the guide roller 32 supported by the arms 30 of the corresponding cylinder carriage at the adjacent side of the printing cylinder 15, whence said web is directed downward beneath said cylinder and around the impression surface thereof so as to adapt it for receiving the printing impressionof the corresponding form.
From the printing cylinder 15, cach web is directed upward over and aroimd, the delivery guide roll 33 supported by the arms 50 at its side opposite to the guide roll 32, whence such web is directed horizontally over the frame to a guide roll 42 adjustably mounted in bearings in the frame and capable of adjustment in the direction of tra vel of the web by means of screws 43, so as to per-mit the take-up necessary for securing registry of the impressions on opposite sides of the webs with each other. F rom each take-up roll 4-2 the corresponding web a; or m1 is directed horizontally of the frame above the printing cylinder 15 to and around the receiving guide roll 32 supported in the arms 30 of the corresponding cylinder carriage at the perfecting cylinder 1G at ,the end of such carriage opposite to the lninting cylinder 15, whence said web is directed downward beneath said perfecting cylinder and around the impression surface thereof in position to receive the perfecting impression of the corresponding form, after which such web is led upward over the delivery guide roll 33 in the arms 80 at the opposite side of such perfecting cylinder' 16, whence it passes to the delivery means 11e customarily provided at the former of the `cutting mechanism. Y
By this arrangement of the web guides, it will be seen that a loop is produced in each web between the guide roll 41 and the delivery means des, and that the print-ing cylinder 15 operates upon the lower run r3 of web comprised in such loop to print one side of the web Aupon one of the forms of the corresponding form carrying member 6, while the web being turned or reversed at the take-up roll e2, the upper run ai* comprised in such loop is passed beneath the perfecting cylinder 1G, which is thereupon caused to operate topi-int the opposite surface of the weband perfect the saine upon the form at the opposite end of the form carrying member 6. In the structur shown, an auxiliary guide roll d'is interposed between the lower deck 2 and the delivery means all, to direct the web rc1 upward s0 that it may be run intothe same cutting mechanism which receives the web fr, but thi-s is immaterial tomy inveniis tion, since it will be obvious that the two webs may be carried to different cutting mechanisms when desired.
In the structure shown in the drawings, the cylinders 15 and 1G at each deck 2 and 3 are rigidly connected together by the carriage whereon they are supported, so that they may be caused to nio-ve in unison during the reciproca-tory movement of'such carriage, and the form beds or supports at each deck are similarly tied or connected rigidly bythe lateral parts of the carrying member 6, so that the two forms at each deck are likewise caused to move in unison with each other during the reciprocatory movement of said member G, and for the simultaneous reciprocation of the respective cylinder carriages and their corresponding form carrying members 6, 6, l provide actuating means which I will now describe. l
Said actuating means as herein shown is arranged for the conjoint actuation of the printing and perfecting devices at each of the respective decks 2 and 3 of the machine and includes means operable at each deck to impart reciprocatory movement simultaneously to the fo-rm carrying member and cylinder carriage at such deck in reverse directions, the parts being so constructed and arranged that .the forms are caused to be moved, during impression, in the direction of travel of the continuously moving web and at such velocityfcompared with the reverse directional movement of the impression cylinders, as will insure the positioning of successive impressions of the forms upon the web, the same occurring at alternate or similarly directed strokes of said forms, in such close succession and sequence as is necessary to avoid the presence of blank spaces between them.
The actuating devices herein shown, include a driving shaft 4G journaled at the lower part of the machine frame beneath the upper deck 3 and provided with a pulley f7 adaptedto receive a belt or band whereby said shaft may be driven from a suitable source of power. The movement of said driving shaft 46 is communicated by means of tooth gearing in trains -18 and e9 extended along the side of the frame, to shafts 50, 50 extended transversely across the machine frame beneath each of the respective decks 2 and 3. Where desired each of the gear trains 4S and 49 may include a sliding gear 49a adjustable lengthwise upon its supporting stud as indicated in Fig. 8, and adapted to be thrown in and out of mesh with its companion gears so as to permit of interrupting the operation of the actuating means at the corresponding deck of the machine.
Each such shaft 50 carries a pinion 51 having an elongated skew gear surface and held between the arms of a slide member or carriage 52 supported for reciprocatory movement in a direction parallel with the length of the shaft 50 and adapted when moved to compel corresponding movement of such pinion 51 endwise upon the shaft 50, without, however, interfering with the rotatory movement of said pinion in unison with said shaft 50, the latter being provided with an elongated key or feather 53 which permits endwise adjusting movement of the pinion, while compelling the same to turn in unison with said shaft. The slidefmember or carriage 52 is provided with an antifriction roll 52"L engaged with a grooved cam 54 mounted on a shaft extended at right angles to the corresponding shaft 50 and driven by means of bevel gearing 55 from a stud 57 j ournaled in the machine frame and driven by means of gearing 58 from the gear train '-18 or a9 whereby the corresponding shaft 50 is driven from the driving shaft a6.
Each pinion 5l is arranged with its skew gear surface intermeshing with a. correspondingly pitched skew surfaced wheel 60 mounted upon a shaft (il extended transversely across the machine frame beneath the corresponding deck 2 or 3 whereby it will be seen that movement is imparted` to each such shaft Gl from the corresponding shaft 50 driven from the drivingishaft as above described under control of the cam 54 which is operable to vary the rotation of such shaft 61 at different points in each revolution thereof and the movement of said shaft 61 at each deck of the machine is communicated by gearing G2 to similar parallel shafts 63 and extended horizontally across the machine frame beneath the corresponding deck 2 or 3, and so located that their central portions are extended transversely beneath one end of the form carrying member 6 at such deck, while their extremities are caused to project beyond the opposite sides of the machine frame beneath the oppositely arranged or spaced side portions 27 27 of the corresponding cylinder carriage which side portions, as clearly shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings7 are mounted for reciprccatory movement upon the oppositely located parallel guides ff, 4: integrally produced upon the side portions of said frame. i
The arrangement of the auxiliary or intermediate guides 5, 5 at each deck 2 and 3 of the machine is such that a. space or opening 67 is present between them at the central part ofA the form carrying member G, said space or opening being extended parallel with the direction of travel of said member during its reciprocatory movement, and said space or opening 67 is of such dimensions as to receive a pendent rack surface G6 secured upon the under surface of one of the terminal bed supporting portions 7 of said member-6,beneath which the central portions of the corresponding shafts63 and 64; are also extended. y y

The structure and arrangement of the bed actuating devices is clearly illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings wherein the parts are shown in sectional side elevation as they 'appear at opposite ends of the travel of the member 6, and for the operation of the cylinder carriages at the respective decks 2 and 3 of the machine, 1 have provided similar actuating means as clearly indicated in Figs. 1 and 6 of the drawings, the oppositely arranged side portions of the cylinder carriage having pendent racks 66d which are adapted, during the reverse reciproeatory movements of the cylindei carriages to be alternately engaged with the mutilated gear surfaces of cylinder actuating members 68EL and @9LL secured upon the oppositely projecting extremities of the shafts 63 and 64 beyond the opposite sides of the machine frame. y
The structure and arrangement of the parts of the cylinder actuating means thus provided, and their operation, are exactly similartothe structure, arrangement and operation of the bed actuating means above described and shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings excepting that, since the cylinder carriages are desired, to travel through a longer path than that of the member 6 and to be moved reversely to the travel of the form carrying member 6, the. cylinder actuating members 68at and 69a are made larger in diameter than the corresponding bed actuating members, and are secured upon the respective shafts 63 and 64 in positions reverse to the positions of the bed actuatingv `members 68 and 69.` In this way it will be seen that when the bed actuating member 68 i oto shown in Fig. 2, is brought into operation to reversely drive the member 6 by the intermeshing of its mutilated gear surface with the rack 66 of such member, the mutilated gear surfaces 70 of the cylinder actuating members 68L at opposite ends of the shaft 63 are broughtintoengagement with the rack 66EL at opposite sides of the cylinder carriage to drive the same in a direction reverse'to the travel of the member 6. The structure and arrangement of the cylinder actuating devices hereinabove set forth, whereby the cylinders are caused to traverse paths longer than the paths 'traversed by the form supporting members 6, are of material importance in a machine such as that to which I have herein shown my present improvements applied for use, since when the beds are driven with a substantially uniform velocity during the period of impression, theJ requisite slowing of the same at the ends of their reciprocations, essential for the accomplishment of the reversal of their movement, results in a certain shortening of the actual time of impression, to compensate for which the excessive travel of the cylinders suffices. This function of the travelin cylinders, moving reversely to the travel of the members 6 is altogether independent of the shortening of the stroke arising from such movement of the cylinders as is complemental to the travel of said members 6 during the period of impression.
Furthermore it will be apparent that the employment of the traveling cylinders moving in directions reverse to the travel. of the members 6 is of very material advantage in a. machine such as that to which 1 have herein shown my invention applied, since such reverse travel of the members of the printing couples serves not alone to shorten the stro-ke, with resultant reduction in the size and weight of the machine, and in the expenditure of power needful for its operation, but also greatly lessons the time during which it is necessary to maintain substantially absolute synchronism between the movements of the forms and traveling web, whereby the liability of breakage of the web and interruption of the operation of the machine is also much lessened.
At each deck of the machine herein shown the shafts 29, 29 of the respective cylinders 15 and 16 are provided at their opposite ends with eccentric bushings 73 mounted for turning movement in the upwardly extended bearing portions 23 of the cylinder carriage and capable of adjusting movement so as to be operable to raise and lower the cylinders relatively to the form supporting member 6 traveling beneath them as is requisite for tripping or throwing such cylinders on and off impression. The eccentric bushings 73, 73 are provided with arms 74, 7 extended downward at the opposite sides of the cylinder carriages and at each deck of the machine, these pendent arms 74, 74C of the eccentrics 73, 73 at opposite ends vof the printing and perfecting cylinders 15 and 16 are tied or connected together by means of rods or links 75, 75 extendedlengthwise along the oppositei sides of the carriage above its side members 27, 27, so as to operate to compel movement of the eccentric bushings appropriate to said cylinders 15, 16 in substantial unison with each other. p Y
The rods or links 75, 75 at eaeh'deck of the machine are provided with spaced collars 76, 76 positioned midway between the cylinders 15 and 16 and at the opposite sides of the cylinder carriage, and between the collars thus provided at the opposite sides of the carriage are arranged arms or abutments 77 77 upwardly extended from the machine frame. rFliese arms or abutments are adapted, when the carriage is moved in one direction, to contact upon the collar 76, 76 nearest one end of said carriage as the latter approaches the end of its stroke, so as to operate to shift the rods or links endwise in one direction and correspondingly rock -the eccentric bushings 73, 7 3 for the respective cylinders in unison with each other. 1When the carriage nears the end of its travel in the opposite direction, thesaid arms or abutments 77, 77 at opposite sides thereof will operate by contact upon the collar 76, 76 nearest the opposite end of the cylinder carriage, to again shift said rods or links 7 5, 7 5 endwise, but in the direction opposite to that in which they were before shifted, in order that the eccentric bushings 73, 73 of the printing and perfecting cylinders may be again rocked and caused to properly trip the printingV and perfecting cylinders.
The eccentric bushings of the cylinders 15 and 16 at each deck of the machine may be similar in throw, but inthe embodiment of my invention herein set forth, said bushings at one cylinder, as 15, of eachV deck of the machine are set reversely to the bushings at the other cylinder 16 of the same deck, so that when in the operation of the machine, the bushings are rocked upon the approach of the cylinder carriage to one end of its stroke, one of the cylinders, as 15, at said carriage will be tripped or thrown off impression, while the other cylinder, as 16, at the same carriage will be tripped or thrown upon impression, and when the carriage nears the limit of its rtravel in the reverse direction, upon the next or succeeding stroke, its cylinders will be again tripped or thrown into opposite relative positions, the cylinder 15, for example, being then tripped or thrown upon impression, while the cylinder 16 is tripped or thrown off impression.

lt will also be evident that since the mutilated gear members 68 and 69L which operate to drive the cylinder carriage at each deck 2 and 3 of the improved machine are secured upon the same shafts 63 and 64whereon the corresponding actuating members GS and `69 for the form carrying member o are mounted, the movement imparted by said members 68a, 69L will also be controlled by the cam 54 and sliding pinion "51 at the corresponding deck of the machine in exact conformity to the control exerted upon said member 6 as above described, so that as the form carrying member 6 is slowed down to permit its reversal upon its approach to the termination of its stroke in one direction, the corresponding cylinder carriage, approaching the termination of its stroke inthe opposite direction will be similarly slowed down in order that thestrains imposedupon the mechanism may be lessened during` reversal ot the cyl-y tinuously intothe machine by the feeding devices 39 and is passed upwardly through the central opening 10 of the member 6 and directed by the guide rollers 41, 32, 33 and 42 through the printing and perfecting` devices to the delivery roll at the cutting mechanism 44 or equivalent device to which the web is to be supplied, the construction and arrangement of the partsbeing such that the web is caused to travel ata substantially constant and uniform speed through the printing and perfecting devices at all times, both during and aiter impression, whereby it is permitted to dispense with the employment ot' crpialir/,ing or compensating devices `tor varying the speed of movement ofthe web or for stopping and starting `the same, such as have been customarily"` provided. heretofore in fiat bed web printing machines.
The formation of the member 6 with the central opening 10 between its spaced bed portions 8, 8, and the extension of the web upwardly therethrough as indicated at 002, between the forms 9, 9, at opposite ends of said member 6, permits the webvto be conveniently led into and through the improved machine in such a manner as'to facilitate the turning thereof in order that when one surface of said web shall have been printed upon by the Cylinder' l5 and its cooperating form 9, the opposite surface of such web may be turned lowerinost and presented in position to receive the impression of the form at cylinder 16, and this peculiar arrangement and structure of the parts also avoids the employment of turning` bars or equivalent devices and permits a straight run of the web through the machine from the web roll to the cutting mechanism or equivalent delivery 44.
The simultaneous reciprocation of the form and cylinders in opposite directions, permits not only of shortening the travel of such partsl so that the machine may be made much more light and compact in construction, but also facilitates the printing, at each impression stroke of the form, an extent of web greater in length than the travel of the form during impression. n It will thus be seen that if it be desired, in the construction of the printing machine embodying my improvements, to make the form and cylinder to travel equal distances in opposite directions during impression, the continuously moving web, being driven at a substantially uniform and constant speed throughout the operation of the improved printing machine, both on and off impression, will travel during impression to an extent equal substantially to one-half the length ofthe form, or of the impression thereby produced upon the web, and after such impression, said web will travel a further distance also equal substantially to onehalf the length of the form, or of the impression produced thereby upon the constantly moving web so that, at the commencement of the next succeeding impression stroke of the form, the web will have been sufficiently far advanced to permit the nextk succeeding impression of the form to be 'produced thereon closely adjacent to the termination of the last preceding iinpression. Y 1n the embodiment of my invention herein shown, however, I have provided such a construction and arrangement of the form and cylinder actuating means, and of the tripping mechanism for throwing the printing couples on and off impression, that the impression cylinders are caused to travel, during the impression stroke, ak sufficient distance over and above one-half of the length of the form, and of the impression thereby produced upon the web, to insure the travel of the form roller 2O appropriate to said cylinder andform over the entire extent of the form, in order that the same may be properly and completely inked by such form roller during the movement of the cylinder carriage whereon said roller is supported, prior to the commencement of the impression. Since the actuating means for the form and cylinder of each printing couple are constructed and arranged to operate in synchronism, it will be understood that the total extent of travel of the form during each stroke of the member 6 is somewhatr greater than is absolutely requisite for the completion of an individual impression upon the web during the printing coperation of the form and cylinder.
For practical purposes also, since the structure and arrangement of the form actuating means hereinbefore described is such that the form is caused to travel at a substantially uniform and constant speed during the impression, conforming to the rate of travel of the constantly moving web, it is also desirable that the total travel of the elements of each printing couple in the improved printing machine to which my invention is herein shown applied, shall be so increased above what is absolutely essential for impression or printing coperation of such elements as will permit sufficient slowing down of such elements just prior to the termination of their several strokes or reciprocations as may be necessary or desirable for effecting the needful reversal of movement at the end of each such stroke without the imposition of excessive or dangerous strains upon the operative parts of the machine. In the improved printing machine herein shown, the excess travel of the elements of each printing couple occurring immediately subsequent to the completion of each impression and made necessary by the peculiar arrangement of the inking mechanism as above explained, is utilized as a part of the excess travel requisite for slowing down the elements of theI printing couple prior to the reversal of their direction of travel at the terminations of their impression strokes. One of the operations 0f the cam 54, to slide the pinion 5l endwise along the shaft 50 is timed to occur during such excess travel of the elements of the couple just subsequent to the completion of the impression, so that the extent of travel of such elements is correspondingly decreased beyond what would otherwise be necessary for the most practical results.
It will be evident, of course, that the relative travel of the elements of the printing couples in the machine constructed according to my invention and shown herein, is not arbitrarily fixed in any yparticular ratio,but is susceptible of such variation as may be thought desirable or convenient in view of the nature of the work to be performed. While it is desirable in some cases, as in the machine herein shown, to decrease the travel of the form during impression below the length of theprinting` surface thereof, or of its impressionupon the web, in order that one impression may be produced upon the web immediately succeeding a prior impression, or only separated therefrom sufliciently to afford margins for the printed pages, `this is in no wise essential to the broad spirit and principles of the present invention since it will be obvious that it may in certain cases be desirable to produce spaced impressions upon the web, in which event it is only needful to increase the travel of the form during impression `so as to partially or wholly neutralize the compensatory function of the reversely ytraveling` impression cylinder.
lt 'will also be understood that where, as in the embodiment of myinvention herein shown, the formA and web travel forwardly durinol im nession. it would auaear' to be' impossible to movethe form upon 'its impression stroke through a greater distance tlian one-half the 'length of web fed through the machine for each impression of such form, but since the form is idle andv not upon impression during its retracting or return stroke, it will be seen that by appropriate formation of they cam groove `in the cam 5J;- at its point which engages'theroller 52 duringl such return stroke, the return movement of the form may be speeded up by proper endwise movement of the pinion 5l so as to compensate for ay certain excess in travel of the form during its impression strolfze beyond one-half the length of web fed through the machine for each impression.
lfxnfthermore it will beunderstood that it not absolutely essential to the broad spirit of the invention, that the web should be fed thnough the machine at a constant or uniformspeed, although this is desirable for practical reasons. Where desired, the will) may be variably or otherwise fed or pulled through the machine without departure from the invention. ln the machine herein shown, this rmay be accomplished by properly modifying the web feeding' means and the conformation of the groove in cam 54. f
i From the above description of my improvements, itwill be seen 'that the print-ing machine constructedaccording to my invention is of an eiltremely simple andcomparatively inexpensive nature, and is particularly well adapted for-use by reason of the convenience and increased speed with which it may be operated, and of the ease and facility with which the necessary adjustments may be made, and it will also be obvious from the above description that the device is susceptible of some modification without material departure from the principles and spirit of the invention, and for this reason l' do not desire to be understood as limiting myself to the precise formation and arrangement of the several parts herein set forth in carrying out my invention in practice.
Having thus described my invention what l claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent isW i y l. A printing machine having a bed adapted to support a flat form, a cylinder cooperating with the bed, means for imparting reciprocatory movements to said bed and cylinder in reverse directions simultaneously during impressions, and web feeding means operable to feed a web between the bed and cylinder during impressions at a constant and uniform rate of travel.
3. A printing' machine having a bed adapted to support a flat form, a cylinder cooperating with the bed, means for imparting` reciprocatory movements to said bed and cylinder in reverse directions and simultaneously during impressions, and operable to compel substantially constant and uniform travel of the bed during impression, and web feeding meansy operable to feed a web between the bed and cylinder at a velocity conforming to the substantially constant and uniform travel of said bed during impressions.
4. A printing machine having a bed adapted to support a flat form, a cylinder cooperating` with the bed, means for imparting reciprocatory movements to said bed and cylinder in reverse directions and simultaneously during impressions, the reciprocatory movements of the bed being less in extent than those of the cylinder, and web feeding means operable to feed a web between. the bed and cylinder during impressions at a substantially constant and uniform rate of travel.
5. A printing machine having a bed verse` directions and tl'irough different distances, one of said members being anim-- ing couple and operable to ink the printing form thereof, and means operable to feed a web to be printed to said printing couple at a substantially uniform and constant rate 0f travel during impressions, the total relative travel of the members of the printing couple during each stroke being notless than the length of web fed by the feeding means for such impression plus the distance between centers ofthe form roller and the cylinder ofthe printing couple.

A printing machine having a printing couple including reversely reciprocatory members, means operable to impart reciprocatory movement to said members of the printing couple simultaneously in reverse directions and means in controlling. relation to said driving means and operable to compel constant and uniform travel of one of said members of the printing couple during impression and to vary the travel of such member between impressions.

kalso operable to reduce the velocity of the bed prior to and after the period of impression, and means for moving the cylinder, during the period of impression, complementally and in a direction reverse to the travel of the bed and to an extent suflicient to compensate for the reduction in velocity of the bed prior to and after the period of impression.

A web printing machine having a printing' couple including two members one of which is a bed adapted to support a flat form and the other of which is an impression cylinder co-acting with the form supported upon the bed, means for moving the bed, during the period of impression, with a uniform velocity, means for feeding a web between the bed and cylinder operable to move the web in synchronism with the bed yduring such period of impression, and means for moving the cylinder, during such period of impression, complementally and in a direction reverse to the travel of the bed, operable to shorten the time during which synchronism is requisite between the bed and traveling web.
