CURTAIN-FIXTURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 2n, i917.
Application led January 8, 1917. Serial No. 141,147.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, nonni DEMING, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing` at lilindsor, in the county of Essex and Provinceof Ontario, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and usefullmprovenients in Curtain-Fixtures, of which the following is a specification, reference Another object of my invention is t-o fur-V nish a window frame with a novelsupport for the confronting free ends of `pivoted curtain rods, thus preventing the rods from sagging or bending due tothe vweight of curtains, portires, or draperies Vsuspended therefrom.
A further object of my invention is to provide a simple, durable, inexpensive and easily adjusted and installed curtain fixture that can be readily finished to harmonize with its support and present a neat and attractive appearance in a room or other compartment.
I attain the above and other objects by a mechanical construction that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawings, wherein- Figure l is a perspective view of a curtain fixture, without curtains, and with one of the pivoted rods swung to one side;
Fig. 2 is a plan of a curtain fixture with the pivoted rods in a. closed position;
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of a curtain fixture provided with sets of curtains;
Fig. 4i is a front elevation of a portion of the fixture;
Fig. 5 is a detail view of a portionof the fixture illustrating a slight modication of my invention, and
Fig. 6 is a cross sectional view of a curtain rod showing one way of attaching curtains to the same.
In the drawing, thc reference m'lmeral l denotes a portion of a window, door or alcove frame and mounted at the sides of the frame, in vertical. alinenient, are sets of bearings each bearing consisting of a plate adapted to be attached to the frame l by screws or other fastening means, and a projeeting aperturcd lug at the upper edge of the plate.
Pivoted in the bearings 2 are curtain rods, comprising vertically disposed shank portions 8 journaled in the bearings i2, with crank portions -l and 5 at the ends thereof. The crank portion d at the lower end of the curtainrod servos as a handle by which the shank portion 3 may be easily turned in the bearings 2, and the crank portion 5 is of greater length than the crank portion i so that when the curtain rod is in a closed positi-on the crank portion 5 will support a lateral portion 6 of said rod away from the lintel or upper railof the frame l. As shown,the` crank portion or handle 4: is in a vertical plane parallel with the plane of the lateral portion G, so that when it is desired to swing the lateral portion 6 to an open position, as shown in Fig. l, a similar movement is imparted to the crank or handle a. The long crank portion 5 of the rod normally rests upon the uppermost bearing 2 and the crank portion or handle 4L is suficiently removed from the lowermost bearing 2 to permit of the shank portion 3 of the rod being shifted vertically to facilitate moving the lateral portion 6 of the rod, as will hereinafter appear.
Attached to the lintel or upper rail of the frame l, intermediate the ends thereof, is
the plate 7 of a bracket arm 8 said plate being connected to the frame by screws or other fastening means. The bracket arm S projects outwardly from the frame and has the outer end thereof provided with a cornpound curved or grooved support or ledge 9 adapted to receive and hold the confronting ends of the lateral portions 6 of the curtain rods. lVhen the curtain rods are swung to a closed position, the lateral ends thereof engage and ride over a cam surface 10 forming part of the support 9 and in doing so the curtain rods are slightly elevated, but eventually have the ends thereof seat in the grooved portion of the support 9. This support cooperates with the uppermost bearings 2in firmly holding the lateral portions 6 of the curtainrods, so that one or more curtuns may be suspended from each rod. `For instance7 in Figs. 3 and 6 of the drawings, there are shown curtains 11 having cases 12 to receive the lateral portions 6 ot' the eurtain rods, and these curtains may be in the form of marginal decorations at the sides and top of the window trame, while additional curtains, portires or draperies 13 may be suitably attached, for instance by stitches or pins, to the eases 12, whereby the fixture will have a highly decorative effect. To prevent the curtains of each rod from becoming accidentally displaced when the rods are swung to an open position, the ends of the lateral portions 6 are provided with spaced openings or apertures 14 for Cotter pins 15 or similar retaining members, and these Cotter pins are set in suiiiciently from the ends of the lateral rod portions 6 so as not to interfere with the ends of the rods riding on to and seating in the support 9.
For fear that a gust of wind may aeei dentally open the curtains, I may provide the upper ends of the shank portions 3 of the rods, below the uppermost bearings 2, with coiled compression springs 16 engaging the uppermost bearings 2 and cross heads 17 carried by the shank portions 3. The eX- pansive force of these small springs will hold the shank portion 5 seated upon the uppermost bearings 2 with the ends of the lateral portion 6 seated in the support 9. To open the curtain rods it will then be necessary t0 slightly elevate the same whereby the confronting ends of the rods mayY freely ride out of engagement with the central support 9. Y
It is thought that the operation and utility of the curtain rods willbe apparent with; out further description, and while in the drawings there are illustrated the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such variations and modiiications as fall within the scope of the appended claim.
lWhat I claim is A curtain fixture comprising vertically alining bearings adapted for attachment to the sides of a frame, a support adapted for attachment to the top of the frame, one
piece curtain rods having shank portions j ournaled in said bearings and cranks at the ends of the shank portions of said rods with lateral curtain supporting portions carried by some of said cranks and adapted to en-V gage said support, pins in the lateral curtain supporting portions of said rods adapted for retaining curtains in engagement therewith, and springs on the shank portions of said rods holding the curtain supporting portions thereof normally seated on'said support.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
