Speeification of'Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it lmown that I, GUY M. BARBER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Oil-Burner, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention appertains to hydrocarbon burners, and relates to improvements in such burners utilizing oil or other liquid fuel.
It is the object ofthe invention to provide a novel and improved tip for a hydrocarbon burner, whereby to produce an effective mixture of the fuel with the air, steam, or other pressure fluid, and to provide for an effective fan-shaped flame.
With the foregoing and other objects in View which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the burner.
Fig. 2 is a front view of the tip.
Fig. 3 is a rear view thereof.
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the tip.
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a modified form of tip.
Fig. 6 is a rear view of the modified form.
Fig. 7 is a diametrical section ofanother modification.
Fig. 8 is a similar view of a still further modification.
The body of the burner includes a mixing tube 1 having one end attached to one end of a T-coupling 2, and an oil or fuel su ply pipe 3 is attached to the arm or branc of said coupling. A. fluid pressure supply pipe 4 extends longitudinally through the coupling 2 into the mixing tube 1, to supply compressed air, steam or other pressure fluid into the tube 1 for sucking the fuel into said tube and atomizing the same, thereby to produce the combustible mixture.
A sleeve 5 is threadedly or otherwise detachably engaged upon the end of the tube 1 for holding the tip 6, which is of cylindrical form and threaded or otherwise removably fitted in the sleeve 5. The tip 6 has diametrically opposite segmental-shaped recesses 7 between its ends to provide chambers for receiving the mixture, and the tip is provided with diverging bores or apertures 8 extending from its inner or rear end to the recesses 7 for dividing the mixture into two streams flowing into the recesses 7 The tip 6 is provided further with a pair of diverging slots or relatively flat channels 9 extending from the outer or forward end of the tip 6 to-the recesses 7. Those portions of the slots 9 adjacent to the outer end of the tip extend to the sides of the tip 6, as seen in Fig. 4, and those portions of the slots 9 adjacent to the recesses 7 terminate short of said sides of the tip so that the tip remains intact. The adjacent portions of the slots 9 meet in the plane of the outer end of the tip 6, and the mixture flows from the recesses or chambers 7 in wide and shallow streams through the slots 9, the two streams meeting in the plane of the outer end of the tip 6 and then being spread by the impact of the two streams into a fan-shaped flame, which extends over a considerable area to provide for a maximum heating efficiency.

In the modification shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the tip 6 is of short cylindrical construction, being provided with the slots 9 as above described, but the bores 8 are eliminated, and as a means for separating the mixture into two streams, the rear face of the tip 6 has a wedge-shaped extension 8 projecting rearwardly therefrom and located on adiametrical line, so that the faces of the extension 8 split the mixture into two streams which flow through the slots 9 which terminate at their rear portions at the opposite sides of the basal end of the side extension 8*. The tip 6 illustrated in Fig. 7 is provided with bores or passages 9 converging from the rear end or face of the tip 6 to a recess or cavity 9 provided in the forward end or face of the tip, whereby the streams of the mixture meet to provide the fanshaped flame.
The tip 6 illustrated in Fig. 8 is of capshape, and is provided with the slots 9 diverging rearwardly from its outer end or face, practically the same as the slots 9 above described, but the rear portions of the slots 9 open into the chamber or recess of the tip 6.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A burner tip embodying a substantially cylindrical body having converging slots extending to its outer end and having a ortion in rear-of said slots for dividing into two streams a combustible mixture flowing toward the tip so that the two streams flow through said slots, the slots extending to the sides of the body adjacent to the outer end thereof and terminating short of said sides remote from said outer end, and the adjacent portions of the slots providing a diametrical outlet in the outer end of the body.
2. A burner tip embodying a cylindrical body having a pair of outlet slots converging to its outer end, and a portion projeting rearwardly from between the rear portions of said slots to split into two streams a mixture flowing toward the tip, those portions of the slots adjacent to the outer end of the body extending to the sides thereof and providing a diametrical outlet in the outer end of said body, and the rear-portions of the slots terminating short of said sides.
