Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom t may concer/n.:
Be it known that I, JOHN LINDSAY WEB- s'rnn, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and resident of the city of Ottawa, Province of Ontario, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fuel- Savers and Smoke- Consumers, of which the following is the speciiication.`
This invention -relates to improvements in fuel savers and smoke consumers andparticularly to that type ofl such device in which the products of combustion are led backwardly and forwardly beneath the boiler and then through the tubes, and theobjects of the invention are to increase the efficiency by introducing heated air, and if desired, steam, and. to provide an economical and effective method of heating the air and it consists essentially of a steam boiler furnace having means whereby the products of combustionl pass backwardly and forwardly beneath the boiler and then successively through separated sections of tubes, air heating means comprising checker work, and means for forcing the air through the checker work and dischargingit at suitable points,` all as hereinafter more fully set forth and described in the accompanying specification and drawings.

, Referring to the drawings, A represents a boiler, either for water heating or the production of steam, and having a plurality of tubeslO therein. The boiler is supported in a masonry structure B which rovides vertical spaces 11 and 12 at opposite ends of the boiler, thespace 12 being formed with a metal partition 13 which divides the tubes into upper and lower` sections and forms aba'ffle between them.

C represents the grate of any Vconvenient form located centrally beneath the boiler at the forward end. In accordance with the present invention the grate does not extend the full width of the space beneath the boiler, and return side channels E and F are formed on each side of the grate separated therefrom by longitudinally eXtendin g baffle walls 'G and I-I which extend upwardly to the surface of the boiler.
These baille walls are tapered slightly toward each other at their inner ends and end a distance sho-rt of the end of the boiler whereby a combustion chamber N will be provided in the rear portion of the boiler beyond the bridge wall K and in which combustion chamber the products of combustion may turn and passthrough the channels E and F, direct communication between said combustion chamber and the rear ends of the tubes being cut off by means of a baffle wall L.
In order to bring the flame near the surface of the boiler the portion of the coin-v bustion chamber beyond the bridge wall is filled in withsuitable filling to about twothirds of the height of the bridge wall. In place of making this a solid filling the same practical resultmay be obtained by the construction shown in the drawing, in which a floor 2O is supported on suitable beams 21 forming a space 22.
. Itk will bey seen that the natural draft ofthe boiler through the chimney P will cause the products of combustion from the fire on the grate C to pass rearwardly to the combustion chamber N, thenV to turn and pass forwardly through the passageways E and F 'to the space 23, then through the lower section of tubes to the space 11, then through the upper section of tubes to the chimney l?. The number of tubes in the lower section is preferably greater than in the upper to provide for the greater heat and expansion of the products of combustion while passing through the lower section of tubes.
In accordance with the present invention an air inlet conduit .Q is provided conveniently leading from` the rear ofthe furnace to the bridge wall K, and to provide means for heatingthe air the bridge wall is formed o n the interiorwith brick checker work 24 through which the. air distributes and passes to side conduits 25 and 26 whence it passes to' spaces 27 and 28 formed in the side walls 29 and 30 of the masonry structure.

illed with suitable baliiing means such as circuitous passageways of terra cotta material or brick checker work as shown, the air heated in the bridge wall entering at substantially the center of the spaces 27 and 28 and then passing to opposite ends discharging at the forward end through nozzles 31 and 32 and discharging at the rear end through a distributing conduit 33 which has discharge nozzles 34.
The air may be forced through the checker work by any suitablemeans such as the blower R and the draft may be further increased and smoke more completely eliminated by the introduction of steam, as for example through nozzles 35 and 36 discharging through the nozzles 31 and 32 and through nozzles 37 and 38 discharging into the end of the distributing conduit 38.
It will be seen that the air prior to discharge will be thoroughly heated by its passage through the checker work and the air introduced will produce a secondary combustion which will effect an economy in fuel and eliminate smoke.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of my invention, within the scope of the claims, constructed without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specilication and'drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
That I claim as my invention is:
1. In a fuel saver and smoke consumer and in combination, a boiler, a supporting structure for the same having a vhollow wall through which air may pass extending on opposite sides of the bridge wall, checker' work filling said hollow wall, a bridge wall having checker work therein, means for in troducing air to the bridge wall kand conducting the heated air from the checker' work of the bridge wall to the hollow side wall, and means for distributing the air from the side wall to opposite ends of the boiler and discharging the same laterally to commingle with the products of combustion at opposite ends of the boiler.
2. In a fuel saver and smoke consumer and in combination, abroiler, a supporting structure for the same having hollow walls through which air may pass extending on opposite sides of the bridge wall checker work Jfilling said hollow wall, a bridge wall having checker work therein, means for introducing air to the bridge wall and conducting the heated air from the checker work of the bridge wall .to the hollow side wall, vand means y"for distributing 'the air fromv the side wall 'to opposite ends ofthe boiler to commingle withthel products of combustion, said means including distributing nozzles at one end and a `distributing conduit extending between said hollow walls at the opposite end having a plurality of nozzles therein.
3. In a fuel saver and smoke consumer and in combination, a boiler having tubes therein, a masonry structure supporting the boilerforming spaces at opposite ends into which the tubes open, said structure being formed with hollow side walls, a partition at the front ofv the boiler dividing the tubes into two sections, a bridge wall, baille walls beneath the boiler forcing the products of combustion to turn at the rear end and flow to the front thereof, hollow checker work in the bridge wall, an .air inlet conduit leading into the hollow checker work, connecting conduits leading from the checker work to the hollow side walls, checker work filling the hollow side walls and means for discharging air from thehollow side wall into the products of combustion at both ends of the boiler before entering each section of tubes.

5. In a boiler furnace the combination of a boiler having a multiplicity of tubes, and a supporting structure inclosing the boiler and forming therewith a combustion chamber beneath the boiler and chambers at the ends of the boiler into which the tubes open, a wall dividing'` the combustion chamber from the chamber 4at the rear of the boiler, a partition dividing the chamber at the front end of the boiler into two non-communicating spaces, one of said spaces being in direct communication with one section of the boiler tubes and the other space being in direct communication with the other section of tubes and with the chimney, the two sections of tubes being in 'free communication with each other through the chamber atthe rear of the boiler, a furnace grate centrally located at one end of the combustion chamber of less width than the same leaving return pasageways for the products of combustion on each side of the grate leading. to the first named space at the front of the boiler, and division walls on each side of the grate.
6. In a fuel saver and smoke consumer and in combination, a boiler having tubes therein, a masonry structure supporting the boiler forming spaces at opposite ends into which the tubes open, said structure being formed with hollow side walls, a partition at the front of the boiler dividing the tubes into two sections, a hollow bridge wall, baie walls beneath the boiler forcing the products of combustion to turn at the rear end and flow to the front thereof, an air inlet conduit leading into the hollow bridge wall, connecting conduits leading from the hollow bridge wall to the hollow7 side walls and means for discharging air from the hollow side wall into the products of combustion before entering each section of tubes.
7. In a fuel saver and smoke consumer and in combination, a boiler having tubes therein, a masonry structure supporting the boiler forming spaces at opposite ends into which the tubes open, said structure being formed with hollow side walls, a partition at the front end of the boiler dividing the tubes into two sections, a bridge wall, baiiie walls beneath the boiler forcing the products of combustion to turn at the rear end and flow to the front thereof, an air inlet conduit leading into the hollow bridge wall, connecting conduits leading from the hollow bridge wall to the hollow side walls and means for discharging air from the hollow side wall into the products of combustion before entering each section of tubes, said means including distributing nozzles at one end, a distributing conduit at the other end extending between the said hollow side walls and having a plurality of nozzles therein and steam nozzles coperative with the aforesaid nozzles and the distributing conduit.
