SMOKE-CONSUMER AND FUEIi-ECONOMIZER.
} Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed 0ctober 9, 1e12, seriarno. 724,793. Renewed April 28, 1917. "seriainopieaais.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SYDNEY H. PUDNEY, a subject of the King of Great Britain, re-
siding at Toronto, in the Province of Ontario and Dominion of Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Smoke-Consumers and Fuel-Economizers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to smoke consuming devices and has for its object the provision of a regulator to be fitted to the door opening leading into the combustion chamber of a locomotive or steam boiler furnace, whereby the smoke and evolved gases resulting from combustion may be consumed, thereby preventing the giving off of free carbon or smoke.
The invention consists of a plate ar-.
ranged in the door opening of the fuel chamber and hinged so as to swing inwardly at its lower edge, said plate being controlled in its movements by means of a motor consisting of a cylinder and a piston arranged to operate Within the cylinder and having connection with a pipe, said cylinder being adapted to be supplied with steam, compressed air, or other motive medium.
The invention consists of the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts, which hereinafter will be more particularly set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the appended claim.
Referring to the drawing, forming a part of the specification.
Figure 1 is a sectional view of the combustion chamber of a locomotive or steam boiler furnace provided with a smoke consuming or draft regulating mechanism embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a front view.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description, and indi cated in all theviews of the drawing, by the same reference characters.
The numeral 1 designates the combustion chamber of a locomotive or other type of steam boiler furnace, the same being provided with a door opening 2 by means of which fuel is supplied to take the place of that .consumed. In accordance with this invention an annulus 3 is located in line with the door opening 2 and is secured to the furnace in any manner. A door 4: closes the outer end of the extension 3. A plate 5 is mounted to swing inward at its lower edge.
A bracket 6 or like support is secured to the upper side of the extension or part surrounding the door opening 2 and the plate 5 is hinged thereto in any manner. The plate 5 extends across the space formed between the vertical sides of the door opening 2, but its lower end terminates a short distance from the lower side of the door opening so as not to completely shut off draft when the door A is open. By arranging the plate 5 so as to swing inward at its lower edge the air passing into the furnace through the door opening is directed upon the bed of fuel and commingles with the gases and promotes combustion to such an extent as to prevent the giving off of any free carbon or smoke.
A motor is conveniently located exterior to the furnace and has connection with the plate 5 to control the, movements thereof. This motor consists of a cylinder 7 in which a piston is arranged to operate, said piston having its rod 8 connected with the plate 5 to control the movements thereof. Motive medium is supplied to the cylinder 7 by means of a pipe 9, which may connect with the steam boiler or with a compressed air reservoir, the pipe 9 having a valve 10 which is adapted to be controlled by means of a treadle 11 by pressure of the foot thereon. When the door 4 is thrown open air enters the door opening and is deflected downward by means of the plate 5 so as to sweep over the fire and commingle with and "result in a perfect combustion of the smoke and gases. The plate 5 acts as a deflector and also as a damper and regulates the amount of air admitted into the furnace and causes the eiame to pass directly over the bed of the From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, andwhile I have described the principle of operation of the invention, together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative, and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the claim appended hereto.
Hai ing thus described the invention What is claimed as new, is 4 p In a device as described in combination a combustion chaiiiber,a reduced ll'olliitw'e'xtension having a door opening into said combustion chamber, a removable hollo'W "door support fitted horizontally upon said ex- "tension and projecting 'therebeyond, a dependentbracket formed and 'carriedby said door support and disposed snugly against itlieiupper' end of said eXt'efision'an'clat right "anglesthereto; a hinged pl'ate mounted upon W'ardI-y "of the outer. end of said door sup- "'stippoit' ancl tnean's independent of said lid,
controlling said crank and adapted to cause 'saidp'lateto occupy angular positions with 20 respect to said bracket. V
Inte'stiinony whereof I aflixmy signature in presence of'two Witnesses. .SYDNEY H. PUDNEY.
