CHARNOCK H. MCGALL, OF ATLANTA, GEORGIA.
DRAFT-REGULATOR.
T 0 all whom- 2'2? may concern Be it known that I, Gi-IARNocK H. Mo- CALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft-Regulators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates broadly to draft regulators or dampers, and more particularly to regulators for fire-tube boilers such as those employed in locomotives.
The object of the invention is to furnish efiicient means by which the engineer or fire man may control at will the force of the draft through the boiler tubes.
To this end the invention provides a baffle plate or damper in the smoke box in front of the tube sheet, and an adjustable section slidably secured to the lower edge of such plate and arranged to be raised and lowered by means of a lever so located that it may be operated from the cab.
In order that the invention may be clearly understood reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in sec tion, of the front portion of the locomotive boiler, showing my improved damper applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the damper and operating mechanism, the boiler shell being shown in section.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 1 designates the boiler shell and 2 the smoke stack.
3 is the T communicating with the interior of the boiler and 4 are the steam pipes extending from this T to the cylinders (not shown).
5 designates the usual tube sheet and 6 the fire tubes.
Arranged in front of the tube sheet is a damper preferably formed of two sections or halves 7 and 8. These are secured to a rock shaft 9 journaled in the boiler shell, and to the outer end of which is secured a crank 10 from which extends an operating rod 11 to the cab of the engine. If desired, tapered plugs 10, shown in dotted lines, may be secured to the inside of the damper for the purpose of entering the ends of the Specification of Letters Patent.

fire tubes as described in my co-pending ap plication Serial No. 607,9e3 filed February 11, 1911. o
In order to adjust the size of the space between the lower edge of the damper and the boiler shell so as to regulate the flow of the products of combustion to the smoke stack, I provide a lower section 12 slidably con nected to the main section of the damper, as by means of bolts 14, working in slots 13 in the lower section. Pivoted to each side of this lower section are links 15, the other ends of which are pivoted at 16 to brackets 17 secured to the tube sheet. It will be noted that these brackets are located below the rock shaft 9 so that the baffle plate and the links move on different centers. When therefore the damper is moved by operating the rock shaft 9, the links 15 cause the section 12 to slide up or down on the main section of the damper, the portion 12 being moved downwardly as the damper is swung toward the tubes, and vice versa.
It will thus be seen that T have provided means operating in conjunction with a swinging bafiie plate for controlling the flow of the products of combustion to the stack, and it is thought that the many advantages of my invention will be readily appreciated by those familiar with the requirements of such apparatus.
What I claim is:
1. The combination with a fire-tube boiler having the usual tube sheet and smoke stack, of a battle plate arranged adjacent said sheet, said plate comprising upper and lower sections slidably connected, the upper section being pivotally mounted at its upper edge adjacent the tube sheet, and means for swinging the ba'lfle plate as a unit on such pivot toward and away from the tube sheet, and for simultaneously causing the lower section to slide on the upper so as to change the position of the two sections rela tive to each other.
2. The combination with a fire-tube boiler, having the usual tube sheet, of a rock shaft extending parallel therewith, a baffle plate arranged in front of said tube sheet and comprising main and auxiliary sections slidably connected, said main section being rigidly secured to said rock shaft, and links In testimony whereof I alfix my signature pivoted at one end to said auxiliary section in presence of two Witnesses.
and at the other end to a fixed support in eccentric relation to said rock shaft Where- GHARNOOK MCOALL' 5 by, when said shaft is rocked, said auxiliary Witnesses:
section is shifted relative to said main W. B. CHESHIRE, section. C. 'O. BELL.
