To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that we, EVERETT W. MYERS and AARON E. SHARILEY, both citizens of the United States, and residents of Key Vest, in the county of Monroe and State of Florida, have invented a new and Improved Swinging-Gear for Davits, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to ships and has particular reference to means for manipulating davits for the lifeboats.

Among the objects of the invention is to provide a swinging gear for davits which may be relied upon to lower the boats easily and rapidly, even though the ship may have considerable list.

With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed, and while the invention is not restricted to the exact details of construction disclosed or suggested herein, still for the purpose of illustrating a practical embodiment thereof reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which like reference characters designate the same parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a plan. view of our invention in connection with a boat adapted to be lowered thereby; and

Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, we show at 10 a portion of the deck of the ship upon which are-mounted the checks 11 of any suitable or well known construction for temporarily supporting the boat 12.

At 13, we show a pair of davit arms journaled at the outer edge of the deck in any suitable manner, including a pair of bearings 14. Tackle 15 of any suitable nature is arranged between the ends of the boat and the upper ends of the davit arms.

In devices of this nature, it is desirable and often essential for the best results that the means secured to the davit arms for controlling them, shall be applied as near to Specification of Letters Patent.

the deck as possible. To this end, we provide a gear 16 made in two parts clamped together by means of bolts or their equivalent 17, around that portion of each davit arm closely above the bearing 14, said hearing serving, therefore, as a step bearing for the gear. The gear 16 is shown substantially perpendicular to the axis of the davit arm and is adapted to cooperate with the bevel pinion 18 secured to the outer end of a crank shaft 19 journaled in a bearing 20 close to the pinion. The axis of this shaft is inclined downwardly and outwardly. The upper end of the shaft is journaled in a standard 21 and is provided with a hand crank 22 for manipulating the same. Accidental movement of the gearing is prevented by means of a chain 23 or its equivalent secured permanently at one end at 24 to the deck, and having at its other end a hook 25 engaging over the handle or crank 22.

When the boat is to-be lowered, the cranks 22 may be released and easily manipulated to swing the davit arms toward each other and thence outwardly to lower the boat. The ratio of the number of teeth in the gear 16 to the number in the pinion 18 is preferably about 30:6, and therefore the operator of each crank is enabled to exert ample power upon the davits for the purposes above set forth.

We claim:

The combination with a pair of vertically journaled davit arms, a large bevel gear secured to each davit arm near the deck line in a plane perpendicular to the axis of the arm, an inclined crank shaft journaled adjacent the gear, the inclination of the shaft being outward and downward, a bevel pinion secured to the outer end of the shaft and meshing with the upper face of said gear, a hand device secured to the upper end of the shaft to rotate it, and means cooperating with the hand device to prevent accidental movement of the gearing.
