LUTHER, '1. KENNY, 0F HAWARDEN, IOWA.
FASTENER FOR SLIDING DOORS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LUTHER T. KENNY, a citizen of the United States, residing at IIawarden, in the county of Sioux and State of Iowa, have invented certain useful Improvements in Fasteners for Sliding Doors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to improvements in car doors and hangers therefor, one object of the invention being the provision of a novel arrangement of support and locking means for a sliding car door, whereby the door may be moved any desired distance and locked, and whereby the door must be re leased to close and open it.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a sliding car door and supporting mechanism therefor that is simple, durable, and inexpensive in construction and thoroughly eflicient and practical in use.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation of the door and its hanger, the door being open.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the lower rail. 7
Fig. 8 is a section on line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 5 designates the car having the opening 6,
above which and also beyond the same is the upper door guiding rail 7 which is a strip of metal having the attaching flange 8 and the holding flange 9, whose lower edge is provided with the notches 10, having the straight edge 11 and the inclined edge 12.
The lower rail 13 is made from a single strip of metal and is provided with the attaching'flange 14, which is secured by the fastening devices 15 to the car, with the spacing members 15 to allow for the greater width at the bottom of the car door 16 which has attached to the outer face adjacent the lower edge the casing 17, in which is journaled the large rollers 18, which bear antifrictionally upon the rail 13 and support the door for sliding movement, while the upper rail holds the door from outward dis- Gopies of this patent may be obtained for Specification of Letters Patent.

placement. The lower rail is provided with the two upstanding end lips 19 and 20, and the intermediate side lips 21, the end lips limiting the sliding movement of the door, while the side lips prevent any transverse movement of the bottom of the door.
Pivotally mounted in the outer face of the door 5 adjacent the upper edge thereof, by means of pivot pins 22, are latch bars 23 the outer ends of the short portions of which are beveled at two points 24: which are arranged to contact with the lower edge of the flange and engage the notches 10 therein for releasably holding the doors invarious adjusted positions. To operate to release the latch bar, the plate or rod 25 has its upper end connected to the free ends of the offset portions of the latch bars 23 and extending downwardly and arranged against the door passes through the guide 26 carried bythe door so that a person may grasp the T-shaped handle 27 and elevate the same to release the latch bars 23, the release of the handle 27, permitting the bar 23 to be moved into locking position by the gravity of the parts.
What I claim as new is:
The combination with a sliding door, of a guide rail rigidly mounted above the door, a flange extending from the guide rail and overlapping a portion of the front face of the door and provided on its lower edge with a plurality of notches, a pair of latch bars pivotally mounted on the front face of the door and arranged in spaced relation to each other and having the outer terminals beveled to vprovide points for engagement with the notches in the flange, the inner ends of the latch bars being offset, a rod slidably mounted on the front face of the bar and pivoted to the offset inner ends of the latch bars so as to normally hold the latch bars in engagement with the notches, and a handle on the lower end of the rod for removing the latch bars from engagement with the notches in the flange.
' In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
LUTHER T. KENNY.
