Description

1. e. woLFE.
Improvement in Flood Fences.
UNITED STATES PATENT QEEICEo JEROME B. WOLFE, OF MARION, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF, NELSON L. WOLFE, AND EVERETT MESSENGER, SR., OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN FLOOD-FENCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,068, dated January 23, 1872.
To all whom #may concern:
Be it known that I, JEROME B. WoLFE, of Marion, in the county of Marion and in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flood-Gates; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specication.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a floodgate,
as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed draxvin g, in Which- Figure l is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 an end view of my dood-gate.
A A represent two posts driven into the ground, one on each side of the stream where it is intended to have the gate. B represents a horizontal shaft laid across the stream and held in boxes G C on the posts A A. This shaft is square, as shown, except those portions Which are Within the boxes C C, said portions being rounded so that the shaft can turn in said boxes. On one side of the shaft B are secured `a series of palings, D D, which extend above the shaft, as may be desired, all being of the same height. The lower ends of the palings extend below the shaft at unequal depth, to correspond with the bottom of the stream-that is, they should extend further down in the center of the stream than at the banks. At each end of the shaft B, and on the side facing up stream, is an arm, E, having a Weighted box at its outer end, or the Weighted box alone attached to the shaft, so as to hold the gate in an upright position. As long as the Water in the stream is below the shaft B it assists in holding the gate. in the proper position, but when it rises above said shaft and anything strikes the palings it will tip the gate down stream. On the opposite side from the boxes C C, on each post A, is a cross-bar, G, upon which the nearest palngs Will rest when the gate is tipped over; said cross-bars being at such a height that the Weighted arms or boxes Will be on an incline so as to thro7 the gate up again.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the posts AA, shaft B, boxes O C, palings D D, Weighted arms or boxes E E, and cross-bars GG, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this Sth day of December, 1871.
JEROME B. WOLFE.
