GEORGE B. THOMAS, OEv BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE BRYANT ELECTRIC COMPANY, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OF CON- NECTICUT.
LUMINOUS PENDANT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 19, 1917.
To all whom it may concern Be it kno-wn that I, Gnoncn B. THOMAS, a citizen of the United States of America, and residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Luminous Pendants, of which the following is a specification.
My inven ion relates to luminous pendants and particularly to a pendant of the type adapted to indicate the location of the pull member for operating an electric switch, and the object of my invention is to provide a durable mounting for luminous material and of such nature that it may be readily attached to the pull member.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 is a vertical section through a pendant in which my invention is embodied in one form; f
Fig. 2 is an inverted plan thereof;
Fig. 3 is a broken elevation of a modified construction of the pendant;
Fig. 4 is an inverted plan thereof; and
Fig. 5 is a plan of a retaining washer.
In the construction shown in Fig. 1 the pendant comprises a transparent housing 10 having a central bore 11 within which ts a tube 12 of luminous material. A rivet 13 passes through the tube 12 and supports the latter on a shoulder 14 at its lower end, while the rivet head 15 lies below the casing 10. Overlyingthe upper end of the latter is a washer 16 having a boss 17 which enters 'the central bore of the casing 10 and through which passes the rivet 13, the head 18 of which overlies the washer and retains the parts in assembled position. The margin of the Washer extends beyond the area of the casing- 10 and affords a shoulder over which the lower edge of the cap 19 may be crimped. The coupling sleeve 20 has at its lower end a shoulder 21 supporting the cap 19, while its upper end is apertured at 22 to admit the end ball of the pull chain 23, the link 24 of the chain passing through a slot 25 which communicates with the aperture 22 and permits the chain to rise into axial position with relation to the pendant.
In the construction which as shown in Figs. 3, 4 and 5 the transparent casing 26, which in both cases is preferably of glass, has a central well 27 which is substantially filled with luminous material 28. A plugr 29 of any suitable character to prevent deterioration of the luminous material is preferably placed above the latter and is held in position by the washer 30 which overlies the upper face ofthe casing. Notches 3l cut in the margins of the washer 30 receive the arms of a spider 32 which supports the casing, the upper ends of the arms being crimped over the upper face of the Washer 30. The cap 19 and coupling sleeve 20 are of the same construction as above described for connecting the pendant to the terminal ball of a pull chain.
In both constructions the luminous material is completely incased and protected against deterioration, while the constructions are both economical to manufacture and readily attached to the pull chain for use with which they are designed.
`I do not limit my invention to the precise forms of' construction illustrated, which may be variously modified without departing from what I claim as my invention.
I claim 1. A luminous pendant of the type. described, comprising a chambered translucent casing, luminous material within the chamber of said casing, a washer overlying ,said chamber, a cap secured to said washer and a coupling sleeve connected to the cap and affording means for detachably connecting the pendant to a chain.
2. In a luminous pendant, a translucent casing having a central bore, luminous material of tubular form fitting Within said bore, and a securing member passing through said tubular luminous material and serving to hold the latter in the casing.
3. A luminous pendant, comprising a translucent casing having a central bore a tube of luminous material fitting within said bore, a rivet passing through said bore and securing the luminous material in the latter, together With means for detachably connecting said pendant to a chain of the type described.
In testimony Whereoi:I I haveysigned my name to this specification.
