' Y adjustment to insert corks of various sizes.

The machine consists of a frame or standard l with a bottle rest 2 mounted in a slide 3 which'works vertically in the foot 4. The bottle rest stem is slotted and threaded as shown in Fig. l and engages the slide 3, a pin 5 passing through the slot 6 in the slide i and the slot 6 in thestem. A spring? .be-
low the slide 3 keeps thebottle support in normally raised position. At the top of the frame is the operating I mechanism which, in the form shown, consists of a handle 8 pivoted to the. frame at 9 and normally held inraised position by a spring 10. This handle has a cam face 11 engaging a rod 12 pressed against its face by a spring 13. The lower partof the rod 12 ward movement of the handle will drive the plunger'l'i downward.
The cork compressor mechanism consists ofa compressor frame 20 horizontally slidable in the main frame 1. .11 pin 21 passes through the compressor frame and engages the cam slot 22 in the handle so that on the downward movement of the handle the frame is drawn inward. WVithin the frame 20 (shown partly in section in Fig. 2) and adjustable slidably therein is the U-shaped jaw 23 which can be adjusted to position by the screw and nut 24. A pair of swinging jaws 25 and 26 work .within the fixed U- shaped aw 23 and are pivoted on the pin 27, which has its bearings 28 eccentrically located and mounted on the main frame of the machine. On rotating th e pin 27 on its eccentrio bearings 28 the jaws 25 and 26 will be moved inor out with respect to the U-shaped jaw 23 as the body 27 of the pin is ofi center with respect'to the bearings 28, 28 at either end the eccentric motion imparted to the jaws 25 and 26 on the rotation of the pin will cause them to move in or out with respect to the U-block thereby maintaining the cork compressing opening in line with the pin 17 1 The lower bearing 28 on the pin 27 is carried by the main frame land the upper bearing 28 is carried by the bridge 1 mounted on the main frame. When'the compressor frame 20 and its U-shaped jaw are moved backward by the handle 8 thesides of the jaws 25 and 26 will slide along the inside face of the U-shaped opening throwing the points together and, cooperating with the small end of the U-shaped jaw to circumferentially compress any cork which may be within the jaws. This action is best illustrated in Fig. 3 wherein-the full lines show the open and the dotted lines the closed position ofthe jaws. When the actuator jaw or U-shaped block 23 moves away from the jaws 25 and 26, which are mounted on a bearing pin occupying a fixed position in the machine, the said compressor jaws 25 and .26will be forced open to their normal position, as shown in fulllinesin, Fig. 3', ,by
means of a spring S, shown in Fig. 5, which is coiled about the body of the pin 27 and has one of its ends engaging in a hole 25 in the interior recess ofthe jaw 25, while the other end thereof engages in a hole 26, of a similar interior recess in the compressor jaw 26. It
will, therefore, be understood that the spring S which is concealed in the housing provided by the registering recesses in the superposed body portions of the compressor jaws 25 and :26, provides for holding the jaws in their normal open position.
To operate the machine the bottle support 2 is set for the proper height and the jaw 23 is adjusted inward or outward to such position that when the swinging jaws 25 and 26 are properly adjusted on their eccentric bearings the three jaws will loosely engage a cork placed within them and the cork will be approximately central under the plunger.
A bottle is now placed on the rest 2, the spring 7 permitting it to be pushed down and then up until the neck is in the recess 29 of the frame 1. A cork is then placed in the compressor jaws and the handle pulled down.
The cam 11 pushes the rod 12 down, throws the wedge 14% against the bolt 15 and locks the bottle rest against downward movement. lVhile this is going on the frame 20, carrying the U-shaped jaw, is being pulled inwardly by the cam slot 22 and the jaws :23, 25 and 26 are compressing the cork circumferentially for insertion into the neck of the bottle. When the cork is compressed the cam slot 19 pushes the plunger 17 down against the compressed cork and inserts it into the neck of the bottle; On releasing the handle the spring 10 throws it up and the various parts are returned to their initial positions.
By sliding the fixed jaw 23 in or out and adjusting the swinging jaws 25 and 26 the machine can be set for corks of different sizes and the plunger 17 will always be approximately over the center of the cork.
From the foregoing, it is thought that the features and advantages of my invention will be readily apparent, and it will, of course, be understood that minor change in the form, proportion, and details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or scope of the appended claims:
1. In a bottle corking machine, the combination of a standard, a slide in the foot thereof, a bottle support adjustably mount ed in the slide, a locking bolt in the foot adapted to engage the slide, operating mechanism, a cam face thereon, a rod one end of which bears against the cam face and a wedge on the rod adjacent to the locking bolt whereby said bolt will engage the slide on the movement of the operating mechanism.
2. Cork compressor mechanism comprising a main frame, a second frame slidably mounted therein, a U-shaped block mounted in the second frame, means for longitudi nally adjusting the position of said U-block, a bearing pin within the main frame ,pro-
vided with eccentric pivots, means for adjusting the position of said pin and a pair of jaws swingingly mounted on said pin.
3. A cork compressor mechanism comprising a main frame, a compressor frame slidably mounted therein, a U-shaped block mounted in the compressor frame, a bearing pin having its ends mounted in the main frame and occupying a fixed position with respect to the slidable compressor frame, and a pair of compressor aws both of which are pivotally mounted on said pin.
4. A cork compressor mechanism comprising a main frame, a compressor frame slidably mounted therein, a U-shaped block carried by the compressor frame, means for adjusting said block longitudinally of the frame, a bearing pin having its ends mount ed in the main frame and occupying a fixed position with respect to the slidable frame, said pin also being in the path of movement of the U-block carried by the frame, a pair of concentric spring-opened compressor jaws mounted on said bearing pin and having an actuating engagement with the 'U- shaped block in the slidable frame.
5. A cork compressor mechanism comprising a main frame, a compressor frame slidably mounted therein, an adjustable block carried by the compressor frame and having a notch of variable width, a pin having its ends mounted in the main frame in a fixed position with respect to the slidable frame, and having an eccentric bearing portion, a knob carried by said pin for rotatably adjusting the same in its bearings in the main frame, and a pair of spring tensioned compressor jaws concentrically mounted on the eccentric bearing portion of said pin, and having an actuating engagement with the sides of the notch in said block carried by the main frame.
6. A cork compressor comprising a main frame, a compressor frame slidable in the main frame, an actuator jaw member carried by the slidable frame, means for adjusting the same therein, and springtensioned compression jaws pivotally mounted on a common bearing supported in the main frame.
7. A cork compressor comprising a main frame, a compressor frame, means for en gaging one end of said compressor frame to shift the same in the main frame, an actuator jaw carried by the compressor frame, spring-tensioned compressor jaws carried by a common bearing pin having a fixed location in the main frame, said compressor jaws being located between the means for operating the compressor frame and the actuator jaw, and operated by the latter.
8.
