DEVICE FOR, APPLYING ADHESIVE MATTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 19, 1917.
Application filed June 6, 1916. Serial No. 102,105.
My invention relates to improvements indevices for applying adhesive matter in the form of fluid, as paste, to paper or other sheet material that is to be affixed to an object, and the object of my invention is to provide a device which shall embody a container that is adapted to contain a su ply of adhesive matter in the form of a iluid with which container shall be associated a rotatable roller so disposed that a portion of its periphery shall be exposed to contact with the contents of said container, where by the entire periphery of said roller may be coated with the adhesive matter within the container and such matter then be transferred therefrom to a desired surface in response to the operation of causing said surface to move over the roller.
A more particular object of my invention is to provide an operative device which may be disposed in association with a pile of labels and which shall be adapted to operate automatically to apply paste to portions of the back surfaces of said labels in response to the act of removing labels one after another, beginning with the uppermost one, from said pile of labels.
I accomplish these objects by devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 is a lan view of the form of structure embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view of the same on a larger scale in vertical section on broken line 2, z of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a view of parts of the same in vertical section on broken line 31, y of Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view of the same in vertical section on the same broken line y, y of Fig. 1 showing certain parts in inoperative positions.
Referring to the drawing, throughout which like reference numerals indicate like parts, I have illustrated one form of structure embodying my invention, which form is particularly adapted for use in a'cannery in the operation of applying adhesive material to an end portion of the back surface of a label that is to be afiixed to a cylindricall y formed can of food products, and such structure includes a base portion 29 upon one end portion of which are mounted two oppositely disposed vertical guiding members 30 and 31 which serve to guide an inverted container 32 which is disposed therebetween to be slidably movable in Vertical directions, said container 32 being of oblong form in cross-section and provided with rods 33 attached one to the outer sur face of each of its opposite narrower vertical sides in a line parallel therewith, which rods 33 engage with the guiding members 30 and 31 to guide the container 32 in its vertical movements.
The bottom end wall of the container 32 is provided with an oblong slotted opening 3% therethrough which openin may be closed tightly, at times required, y a cover which is hinged to said bottom end wall on a line adjacent to said opening 34.
The cover 35 is provided with a soft pad 36 on its engaging side more' tightly to close said opening 34, and said cover 35 may be maintained in its closed position, as shown in Fig. 5, by a spring 37 associated therewith.
Pivotally attached to the bottom end of the container 32 on the broader side of it, opposite the cover 35, are two arms 38 that are united by an integral pivot shaft 39, and rotatably mounted on the free ends of said arms 38 to extend therebetween is a roller 40 whose periphery is covered with yielding material 41, as felt or soft vulcan ized rubber.
The forms and positions of the arms 38 are such that they may be swung to move the roller 40 from its posit-ion shown in Fig. 4 to its position shown by broken lines in Fig. 5 when it is desired to close the opening 34 with the cover 35.
' The arms 38 are each provided with a spring 42 which tends to maintain the roller 40 in the position to cover the opening 34.
To utilize the structure the container 32 is removed from the guiding members 30 and 31 and turned to aposition with its slotted opening 3-l uppermost and then filled with fluid paste and thereupon the roller 40 is disposed to close said opening 34; then a pile of labels 43, shown in Figs. 2 and 4, is placed on the base 29 with their printed sides down and with their end portions (that are to be supplied with paste) disposed between the two guiding members 31 and 30, as indicated in Fig. 2, whereupon the container 32 is inverted and placed between the guiding members and31 with the roller disposed to rest on the top of the pile of labels 43, as shown in Fig. 4;, whereby, when one label after another is pulled end- Wise from the top of the pile of labels 43',
the roller 40 will rotatively move to deposit aste on said labels successively, said paste being carried by the periphery of the material 41 from the interior of the container 32 to the surface of said labels in an obvious manner.
Manifestly many changes may be made in the forms, dimensions and arrangement of parts of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof.
What I claim is:
1. A device of the class described co1nprising a base, vertical guide-standards carried thereby, an adhesive applying receptacle slidably associated with said standards, the bottom of said receptacle having an opening therein, and. a swinging gate closure and swinging adhesive roller interchange 2. An adhesive applying device having an exit opening therein movable means for sealing said opening, and adhesive applying means movable to a position adjacent the.
opening upon removal of the sealing means, the sealing and adhesive applying means being swingingly mounted on opposite sides of said opening and moving in opposed directions.
3. Means for applying adhesive including base-supported standards, an adhesive receptacle, side lugs carried by the receptacle for sliding engagement with said standards, there being an opening in said receptacle, a tensioned flap-valve adapted to close said opening, and a tensioned roller movable to a position adjacent said opening when the flapwalve is opened, the valve and roller being positioned exteriorly of the receptacle.
In Witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name this 20th day of May, A. D. 1916.
HIDETARO ICHIHARA.
Witnesses:
FRANK WARREN, 0. JoHNsoN.
