RENEWABLE THBOAT-PLATE'I'OB, 815WING-*MAGEINES.V
'Application med July ill,l
Be it knownthat I- ALBERT 'I-I. Wals, a
States, residing at N ack,.in thecounty of Rockland and State o New York, have lnvented certain new and usefullmprovements in Renewable Throat- Plates `for Sewing-Machines, of which the This f invention relates to the' throat plates of sewing. machines, one object of the invenplate 'especially yWell adapted to machines of the 'gang needle type and which'can be cheaply manufactured and readily renewed -when 1t becomes worn, without disturbing the entire late, 'and cany also be interchan ed-'wit other forms of plates usable for i'erent purposes, that is to say to ac- Commodatedierent vshapes of feed dogs or `to have the front as to guide certam plies of goods tothe portion thereof shaped so rifbt or the left asv the case-may be by means the beveled sfilate.
. roat plates as used for gang needle machinesare necessarily of a large size, several times larger thanthethroatplates as portion at the frontedge of used on ordinary machines. The manufacture of these large plates entails considerableV expense, since they mustbe accurately made, hardened and ground'on top and bottom so -as to be perfectly parallel Vand-flat. Thisl necessitates straightening after the harden# ing process and a, percentage of them is lost in the strarilglltex'ngprocess because of breakage. en again thoughy rthey are hardened, the needle holes soon become worn `'a' by use and the entire plate must be replaced' by Va `new one. `Thisis entirely done. away `'with inzthe present improvement, because the main throat plate may be made 4afs-usual .but without the hardenn and straightening or grinding, so that t ere are no losses in the Ymanufacimre thereof.v Moreover, '-ithas been found in practice,
4with throat plates used on gang lneedle machnes, that -when the plate is ofy considerable wide rows,
size iall on machines for stitching th'strain set up by the needles penetrating the goods has va tendency to the plate so as to interfere with the mechanism-to properly form the stitches. Especially is this 'so in certain de- Specmcation of Letten Patent.
signs of feeds where the `bars of the throat plate are delicate, because the. needles are close te one another, so that it is necessaryfor portions of the feed .dogs to extend between the needles, and therefore the .plates quickly get out of sha in use. To overcome this 4it has been t e ractice to harden and temper the plates. e diicult in doing this is that the delicate bars or t in sections of the plate become harder than the other ortions thereof, which results in considera le breakage .because the plates sometimes warp inhardening or tempering and must be straightened. Then again they break easily under the -working strain of the needles. e
To overcome these disadvantages I have provided a removable and renewable top plate vmuch smaller in' size and thickness than the main plateso that it can be manu factured cheaply, and con uentl the 4cost lof renewal is reatly redu d an the life of the plate is on errthan that of plates, as
heretofore madeV cause stilness is imparted to the plate and -offers various ad-l vantages because these top 'plates can be made to suit the various stitchin opera-` tions, that'is one substituted for tie other forspecial purposes without changing the main plate, vwhich was heretofore necessary.
In short, with this improved renewable to platethe bottom or supporting plate n Vdependent of or a se arate .pi
-. not be hardened, and as the topplate is nwears the plate and the edges. of the needle holes become rounded, and frequently when a needle breaks by accident the plate 1s damaged beyond repair. This is all obviated with my improved renewable topplate', as the top plate itself can befquickly and read-, ily renewed. Moreover, this improvedplate .gives greater strength and support `to 'the work. Another important advantage of this improvement s'that the top 'plate may be .so
` for lap seam fellin shirts, overalls, etc.
mounted as to be above the level of the cloth and slide pklates, which gives assage to the wor the stltch'ingmv .u and is of special advantage on machines ud mathe work se diversa from the fider is more on a central line with respect to .the stitching position and it also gives freedom to the work around the presser foot and 1o eed.- a
. In this -plateshave n usedextensivel?, but so far as I am aware none have o the detachable variety. Usuall such lates are .made by reducing thefthi :u o the mam around the stitching position. Others ve been madeby'forcing or bendingthe-[metal ii-wd, 1mg a hollow su 0MM-M- thereof;- both of which 'methods exproveziiet is t st theffextra thin.
