Be it known that I, CALVIN B. PATCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Glenellyn, in the county of Dupage and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Side Bearings for Railway-Cars, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a party of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in side bearing for railway cars.
One object of the invention is to provide a simple, relatively cheap roller side bearing for railway cars and so arranged .that the roller will be automatically returned to tion.
In the drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is an endv elevation of portions of a body and truck vbolster of a car, showing my improvementsxin connection therewith. Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinally sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig.13 is a transverse, vertical sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. And Fig. 4 is a view corresponding to a portion of Fig. 2 illustrating slight modification of the means for attaching the springs to the roller. Figs. 5, 6 and 7 are views corresponding respectively with Figs. 1, 2 and 8, but illustrating a still further embodiment of the invention, Fig. 6 being taken on the line 6-6 of Fig. 5 and Fig. 7 being taken on the line 7 -7 of Fig. 6. y
Referring now to the construction illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, 10 denotes the body bolster, 11 the truck bolster pivotally connected at their centers in the usual manner and A the improved side bearing preferably mounted on the truck bolster. As shown, the side bearing A preferably comprises a retaining member or base casting B having flanges 12-12 by which it is riveted or otherwise secured to the truck bolster. The base casting B is of substantially hollow box-like form having side walls 13-13 and curved end walls 14-14. On its interior, the base casting B is provided with a steel insert 15 forming a tread or bearing surface for the anti-friction roller. As shown, the anti-friction roller comprises two members C and C1 spaced apart by means of a connecting yjournal or axle 16 having an enlarged central portion forming langes as indicated at 17-17, the small ends of said journal or axle being inserted in central recesses 18-18 in the roller members C' and C1. By this means, the members C and C1 are moved in unison and retained in proper spaced relation. The centrally enlarged portion of the axle member 16 is provided on opposite sides thereof with eyes 19 to which are attached the inner ends of springs 20-20, the opposite ends of said springs being secured to eye bolts 21-21 detachably mounted in the end walls 14 of the base casting. From the foregoing description, it is apparent that the roller will be returned to normal position by the springs after each actuation and by adjusting the eye bolts 21, theltension ofthe springs 20 mayv bead'- justed as desired.
In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the two spaced sections of the roller are formed integrally and connected by an integral central vportion 116. To form suitable means of connecting this central portion with the centering springs, I provide a collar formed in two parts 117-117, each having perforated ears 118-118 at their ends through which are hooked the inner ends of the springs 120.
In the modification illustrated in Figs. 5, 6 and 7, the base casting and roller members are the same as those illustrated in the other views. Inthis construction, however, the journal or axle member 216, which connects the roller section C and C1 is preferably of I beam cross section at the center as indicated at 217 in Fig. 6. The vertical web of this section is centrally perforated as indicated at 218 to permit the passage therethrough of a long bolt 219. The bolt 119 is extended through suitable perforations 219-219 inthe-end walls of the base casting and is held in position by a nut 220. Springs 221 are mounted on said bolt on opposite sides of the roller so that as the roller is moved from normal position, one of said springs will be compressed and upon release of the pressure on the roller, will automatically return the latter to central position.
I have herein shown and described what I now consider the preferred means of carrying out my invention, but it will be understood that the same is merely illustrative and that various changes and modifications may be made in they parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:

In a roller side bearing, the combination with a base casting, of a pair of Yspaced roller members within saidv base casting and movable in unison, springs on. each lside of said roller members, a central axle member extending between the roller members, said springs-` extendirng tio Vsaid axley member and into the space-between the rollermembers.
