LILLIE IVI. S. LEAVITT, OF MOUNTAINVIEW, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
lCONVERTIBLE CHAIR.
y assenso.
Application filed August 17, 1916.
To all 107mm t may concern:
Be it known that I, LILLIE M. a citizen of the United States, residing at Mountainview, in the connty of Carroll, State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inConvertible Chairs, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to convertible chairs and has for its object to provide a chair of simplel strong and relatively inexpensive construction adapted for use as a rocking or other chair which will be also adapted to be readily converted without the addition of any parts into a crib or cradle for an infant.
Vith this object in view my invention consists in the construction and combination of elements hereinafter described and claimed.
' Referring to the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of a convertible chair embodying my invention arranged as a rocking chair. l
Fig. 2 is a back view chair shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the convertible chair adapted for use as a crib or cradle.
Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view on line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a detail horizontal sectional view on line 5*-5 of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 6 is an elevation of a roller carrying attachment.
In the drawings 1 and 2 indicate the sides of the convertible chair here shown as formed with posts 3 and 4, rockers 5 carried at the lower ends of the posts, top rails 6 and bottom rails 7 the spaces inclosed by the top and bottom rails and posts being here shown as lled by panels 8.
The bottom rails are each provided with a bottom plate extending to the opposite side when the chair is adapted for use as a rocking chair, the bottom plate 9 of the right hand side overlying the bottom plate 10 of the left hand side, the two bottom plates being arranged to slide one on the other and being connected together in any convenient manner to be capable of so sliding one on the other as by dovetail strips 11 fitting in dovetail grooves in the contiguous faces of the two bottom plates.
To the rear edge of the plate 10 and post 3 of the left hand side is screwed back piece 13 and to the rear edge of bottom plate 9 and Sa' LnavrrT,
of the convertible Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 12, 1 911.7.
serial no. 115,386.
post of the right hand side is secured back piece 12, these two back pieces having their free ends adapted to abut one against the other so as to form together a complete back -for the chair when they are brought together as shownin Figs. 1 and 2.
To the front edge of bottom plate 1,0 near the post 4 of the left hand side of the chair is hinged front piece 15 and to bottom plate 9 near post 4 of the right hand side of the chair is hinged front pieces being arranged ward as shown in Fig. to be used as a chair.
One of the back pieces here shown as back to be swung down- 1 when the device is piece 14 these front i piece 13, is provided with a series of parallel [the back pieces but preferably the strips 16 are secured to the right hand front piece and the vertical strip is carried by the left hand front piece.
When the device is to be used as a chair the two sides are pressed toward each other as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 until the free ends of the two back pieces are in contact and the free edges of the two front pieces are also in contact, the front pieces being turned down on their hinges as shown in Fig. 1.
When the device is to be used as a cradle the sides 1 and 2 are drawn apart as shown in Fig. 3 until the shoulders 18 of the strips 16 strike and stop against the abutments 19, the front pieces being turned on their hinges as shown in Fig. 3. The device then presents a crib or cradle with its ends formed by the sides 1 and 2 and with its sides formed respectively by the two back pieces 12 and 13 separated by a space across which the strips 16 carried by them extend and by the front pieces 14 and 15 separated by a space across which the strips 16 carried by them extend, the bottom of thecrib or cradle being formed by the bottom plates 9 and 10, the upper one of which extends over the lower one half its length.
The parts of the-device may be held in either closed position to form a chair or in open position to form a crib or cradle by suitable catches or hooks preferably engaging the strips 16 and suitable hooks or catches may be provided to hold the front pieces in raised position. lf the parts are carefully itted together such hooks or catches may be dispensed with as by reason of the construction above described there is no tendency of the parts to separate when the device is used as a chair or to close together when the device is used as a crib or cradle.
The rockers 5 may be dispensed with if desired in which case the lower ends of the posts 3 and 4 will rest on the floor.
If it is desired to have the device readily movable when used as a crib or cradle the rockers 5 may be provided with an attachment such as is shown in Fig. 6. This attachment as shown comprises a pair of vertical rods 21 each carrying at its lower end a roller 20 and arranged to be vertically movable in guides 22. The upper ends of the rods 21 are connected by a rod 23 suitably bent so as to have an eye at its center to lit over a pin 24 midway between the rods. The rod 23 is preferably made of resilient material sufliciently flexible to be sprung onto and olf from the pin 24. When the rollers are to be made use of the eye of rod 23 will be sprung over the pin and when the rollers are not needed the eye will be sprung off the pin and the vertical rods 21 will be Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the pushed upward until the rollers are within the line of the lower edge of the rocker.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
1. A convertible chair comprising sides, bottom plates carried one by each side and arranged to slide one over the other and each of a length equal to the distance between the sides when in closed position, a back piece carried by each of the sides and consisting one half of the back when in closed position and longitudinal strips carried by one of the back pieces arranged to slide in guides carried by the other back piece.
2. A convertible chair comprising sides, bottom plates carried one by each side and arranged to slide one over the other and each of a length equal to the distance between the sides when in closed position, a back piece carried by each of the sides and consisting one half of the back when in closed position, longitudinal strips carried by one of the back pieces arranged to slide in guides carried by the other back piece, and a front piece hinged to each of the bottom plates and longitudinal strips carried by one of the front pieces arranged to slide in guides carried by the other front piece.
This specification signed this 4th day of August, A. D. 1916.
