f v IMPROVEMENT IN BAGGAGE-CHECKS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,994, dated January 23, 1872.

SPECIFICATION. To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LUTE O. COTTLE, of the city of Cedar Rapids, in the county of Linn and State of Iowa, have invented a new, useful, and Improved Combination Reversible Baggage-Check 3 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specication and to the figures marked thereon, in which- Figure lis the front view; Fig. 2, the reversible side; Fig. 3, the front side of dial; Fig. 4, the reversible side of the dial; and Fig. 5, a sectional view on line .fr .r of Fig. 1, showing the manner of stopping the dial.

To enable others skilled in the art Vto make and use my invention, I will proceed describe its construction and operation.

B is a dial-plate, made round or any other shape desired, either of metal or any other suitable materal; said dial having figures or characters upon both sides to denote stations on the road upon which it is to be used. This dial is also provided with a hole, c, opposite each figure or character, for apurpose`to be hereinafter described. The dial B is pivoted between two metal side plates, D and E, by a pin, s. These side plates are securely fastened together at their lower ends by rivets A. One of them, E, is provided with a pin, c, on its inside. They are left loose at their upper ends so that the one having the pin c, by its elasticity, can be sprung in and out of any of the holes a in the dial, for the purpose of holding said dial in any position required. They are also provided with slots I, so that the figure or character coming before the exposed slots is to denote the station the baggage having this check is destined for. These side plates are The operation of this check is as follows:V

When the check is to be used all that is required is to spring the pin out from the hole which it is in, and then turn the dial around until the figure or character which denotes the station the baggage is destined for comes in front of the slot I, when the pin c will spring in the hole a opposite the igure or character, and hold the dial firmly in place. The strap for fastening the check to the baggage is then passed up the reverse side of the check so as to cover the station which would be otherwise seen through the slot I on the reverse side of thedial.

Claim.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A baggage-check, B, having upon it faces figures or characters, as shown, and provided with holes a, pivoted between side plates D and E, one of which is provided with an iuwardly-projecting pin, c, to engage with the holes a and the strap K, all combined and arranged as and for the purpose described.
