To all whom it may'concem:
Be it known that I, THoMAs J. STURTE- VANT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wellesley, and State of Massachusetts, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Screening or Separating Ma chines,-0f which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to certain improvements in that class of inclined screening or separating machines shown in the Sturtevant U. S. Patents Nos. 1,035,262 and 1,114,064, and the invention has for its object to improve the efliciency and convenience of machines of this class.
In the present improved machines the screen members are elastically suspended from the covers of the 'machines, and on which covers the operating mechanisms for percussively jarring the screen members are mounted. By thus elastically suspending the screen members from the covers of the machines great efliciency of operation is afiorded simply by lifting the hinged covers, all as will hereinafter more fully appear.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side view of an inclined screening or separating machine embodying'the present invention. Fig. 2 is a cross section through the screen box or casing on line 22,.F-ig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a detail view showing the mannerof mounting one of the elastic suspending rods.
Referring to the drawing, 12 denotes the screen casing which will preferably be of sheet steel, and which is preferably mounted in an inclined position on frame parts 13 in such a manner that its inclination may be varied. Secured to the upper end of the screen casing 12 is a feed box 14'within which is a rotary screw conveyer, as in the separator of the Sturtevant patents hereinefore referred to, said screw conveyer being carried by a.shaft 15 provided at one end with a driving pulley 16, and at its opposite end with a pulley 17. The pulley 17 is belted to a pulley 18 on a shaft 19 having hearings in standards 20 mounted at the opposite sides of a hinged cover 21. The shaft 19 is provided with a second pulley 22 belted to asimilar pulley 22 on a second shaft 19 also supported in standards 20 on in the county of Norfolk the opposite sides of the cover 21. The shafts 19 are provided with arms 23 carrying rollers 24 at theirends, said arms being so disposed that the said rollers will engage hammers 25 pivoted to standards 26 mounted on the cover 21, to lift the said hammers at intervals, and said hammers, when released from said arms, will fall by gravity on impact bars 27 which serve to percussively jar or vibrate a screen or screens within the casing 12.
The cover 21 is provided on its underside with angle bars 28 which sustain wires or rods 29 which are engaged by hooked plates 30 attached to the tops of side plates 31 by which the screens are supported. Secured to the plates 31 are angle bars 32 having inwardly extending flanges on which rest the side frame parts 33 of the coarse or scalper screen .34. The side plates 31 are provided near their lowerparts with angle bars 35 the inwardly extending parts of which are provided with studs 36. The edges of the wire cloth for the fine wire mesh screen 37 are clamped between the horizontal members of the angle bars 35 and clamping plates 38 and beneath which clamping plates are arranged screws 39 tapped in lugs 40 secured to the lower edges of the plates 31, .so that said wire cloth for the fine wire mesh screen is removably mounted in place, as will be understood.
' Attached to the wire mesh clothing for the fine mesh screen are cross plates 41 to which are riveted sockets 42 receiving the lower ends of the impact bars 27, said impact bars passing loosely through guides 43 attached to the coarse or scalper screen 34 and also through guides 44 attached to the cover 21. The plates 41 serve as protection plates for the fine Wire mesh screen clothing, so that this fine screen clothing will not be injured by the percussive action of the hammers 25 on the impact bars 27. The protection plates 41 are of slightly lesser length than the width of the fine wire mesh screen clothing. Attached to the ends of the plates 41 are smaller elastic plates 45 preferably having slotted connections with the studs 36 on the angle bars 35.
Secured to the cover 21 are relatively rigid hangers 46 provided near their lower ends with bolts 47 extending .through the side plates 31 and provided with nuts 48 engaging the inner walls of said side plates, so that said plates, which will preferably be of steel, may be forced outward by screwing up said nuts, for the purpose of stretching the wire mesh screen clothing for the fine screen and holding the same taut. During this stretching or tensioning operation the nuts 19 on the studs 36 may be slightly loosened, and may afterward betightened when the stretching ortensioning operation has been effected. The bolts 47 are preferably provided with cotter pins 50 to prevent the nuts 48 from working loose.
The supporting rods 29 are preferably provided at their upper ends with encircling springs 51 arranged between depending portions of the upper angle brackets 28 and nuts 52 mounted on threaded upper ends of the elastic rods 29, thus permitting a certain freedom of movement of the said rods during the jarring operation.
The cover 21 is provided at its upper end with ears 53 having pivotal connections with similar ears 54 mounted on the casing 12, these parts providing a hinge for said cover so that it may be lifted when access to the chamber of said casing or access to the parts supported by said cover may be desired.
The hooked connections of the side plates 31 with the supporting wires or rods 29 afford joints between these parts, so that in stretching or tensioning the fine wire mesh screen clothing said side plates may be forced outward by turning on these joints as hinges or pivots if they should be sufliciently stifi so as not to be sprung in this stretching or 'tensioning operation.
From the foregoing it-will be understood that the rods 29 connected with the cover 21 afiord means whereby the screen members are yieldingly connected with said cover, by the joints just referred to, so that when the machine is in operation the screen or screens supported from said cover by the rods 29 may be percussively jarred in such a manner that the screening operation will be eficiently performed.
I do not claim broadly in this application the combination, in a separator, of a screen member or members yieldingly supported from. thecovcr of the casing of the separator, and means for ring said screen member or members, as this combination is claimed in my application No. 139,555, filed December 29, 1916.
The invention is not to be understood as being limited to the details herein shown, as such details may be varied widely, within the province of mechanical skill, without departing from the scope of the invention as defined by the claims hereunto appended.
Having thus described my invention I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:-
1. In a separator, the combination with percussively ar-' a basing provided with a cover, of rods connected with said cover, side plates suspended from said rods, screen members supported by said side plates, and percussively acting jarring devices for said screen members.
2. In a separator, the combination with a casing provided with a cover, of elastic rods connected with said cover, side plates suspended from said rods, screen members supported by said side plates, and percussively acting jarring devices for said screen members.
8. In a separator, the combination with a casing provided with a hinged cover, of rods connected with said cover, side plates suspended from said rods, screen members supported by said side plates, and percussively acting jarring devices for said screen members.
4. In a separator, the combination with a casing provided with a cover, of elastic rods connected with said cover, side plates suspended from said rods, screen members supported by said side plates, tensioning means, for stretching screen clothing, suspended from said cover and percussively acting jarring devices for said screen members.
5. In a separator, the combination with a casing provided with a hinged cover, of rods connected with said cover, side plates suspended from said rods, screen members supported by said side plates, tensioning means, for stretching screen clothing, sus pended from said cover, and percussively acting jarring devices for said screen members.
6. In a separator, the combination with a casing provided with a cover, of supporting rods connected with said cover, side plates provided 'with hooks detachably engaging said rods, a screen member or members, supported by said side plates, and mechanism, mounted on said cover, for percussively jarring said screen member or members.

In a separator, the combination with magma g a casing provided with a cover, of supporting rods connected with said cover, side plates suspended from said rods, a coarse or scalper screen removably mounted on said side plates, fine wire mesh screen clothing connected with said side plates, hangers attached to and depending from said cover, and tensioning bolts connecting said hangers and side plates, said bolts being provided with nuts which may be screwed up to force said side plates outward to stretch said fine wire mesh screen clothing and hold the same taut.
10. In a separator, the combination with a casing provided with a cover, of supporting rods connected with said cover, side plates provided with hooked members by means of which they may be suspended from said rods, a coarse or scalper screen removably mounted on said side plates, and

11. In' a separator, the combination with a cover, of supporting rods connected with said cover, side plates provided with hooked ers and side plates, said bolts being pro' vided with nuts which may be screwed up to force said side plates outward to stretch 35 said fine Wire mesh screen clothing and hold the same taut.
