OMASJ LEGG-ETT STURTEVANT, OF QUINCY, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR T STURTEVANT MILL COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF MAINE.
SGREEN OR SEPARATOR.
Patented Apr. 6, 11935.
Application filed November 14, 1914. Serial No. 872,138.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, THOMAS L. STURTE- vANr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Quincy, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Screens or Separators, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to screens or separators, and more particularly to that class in which the screens are percussively jarred by means of vibrating hammers acting indirectly on the screens.
The present invention has for its object to provide means whereby the screens will be so mounted or hung that the jarring or vibrating action will be efiective, the screens preferably being of such construction that they may be readily dismounted when necessary, and when dismounted may be rolled up so as to be in compact form for convenient transportation.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side view of a separator embodying the resent invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view illustrating a preferred manner of mounting the screens and suitable means for percussively jarring the same. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view showing a modified construction of sieve mounting and suitable jar- Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail View of a portion of the screen mounting '13 preferably of sheet steel.
construction shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 5 illustrates a modified form of the mounting shown in Fig. 4, and Fig. 6 shows still another form of screen mounting.
Referring to the drawings, 12 denotes frame parts of the separator supporting an inclined box or casing comprising side walls To said side walls or casing, within the chamber of the separator are attached elastic or resilient metallic curtains 14 also preferably ,of sheet steel, these curtains 14 inclining inward downwardly so that their lower edges are at a considerable distance from the separator-side walls 13. The curtains 14 are provided at their lower ends with horizontal flanges 15 to which the screen clothing 16 may be attached either directly, as by rivets, or indirectly. In the construction shown in Fig. 2 the screen clothing is attached to strengthening side bars 17, by rivets or otherwise, the said side bars being provided with pins 18 passing through holes in the flanges 15 of the curtains 14, so that the screens may be readily removed or dismounted from the said supporting flanges, and when thus removed or dismounted may be rolled up for convenient transportation. Instead of providing the bars 17 with pins 18 the said pins may be secured to the flanges Lfi of the curtains 14, as shown in the detail view Fig. 5, this construction also enabling the screens to be readily dismounted from thesaid curtains 14 and to be rolled up for convenient transportation.
In the construction shown in Fig. 3 the curtains 14 are supported by blocks or bars 19 which are preferably removably attached tothe sides 13 of the separator frame, and in this construction the screen clothing 16 is riveted or otherwise directly attached to the flanges 15 of the curtains 14.
In order that the screen clothing 16 may be drawn taut, as is necessary for the best practical use, the curtains 14 are connected with the side walls 13 of the separator frame by means of stretching bolts 20 the heads of which are on the insides of the curtains 13, said bolts being provided on the outsides of the separator walls 13 with adjusting nuts 21 which may be turned for the purpose of stretching the screen clothing taut. The bolts 20 are preferably provided with inside locking nuts 22. V
The screens hung in the chamber of the separator in the manner hereinbefore described may be jarred or vibrated in any suitable manner, as, for example, by jarring mechanism such as that shown and described in the Sturtevant Patents, Nos. 1,035,262 and 1,114,064, this jarring mechanism, as hercinbefore shown, comprisingimpact bars 24 acted on by vibrating hammers 25 which are lifted by rollers carried by rotating arms 27, the rollers 26 being so arranged as to lift the free ends of the vibrating hammers and then release the same so that they may fall by gravity. Any other suitable mechanism for ciently long and heavy to eflfect proper action by gravity, or they may be especially weighted, if desired, and said hammers may be prevented from jumping by stops, as 32.
In the practical use of the invention two or more screens, 2) will preferably be employed, the upper screen being preferably of coarser mesh than the lower screen, as is usual in separators of the class to which the invention relates. \Vith such an arrangement of screens the impact barsQt. may act directly or indirectly on the upper screen, and the jarring of the impact bars may be imparted to the lower screen through spacing blocks, as 31.
From the foregoing it will be understood that the invention, in its preferred form, provides elastic sidejsupports or curtains for the screens, said curtains, the lower edges of which are spaced apart from the side wallsof the separator, affording convenient means whereby the screen clothing may be stretched taut; While in the preferred form of the invention the screens are preferably removably mounted on the said elastic curtains so that they may be conveniently placed in position or may be dismounted and when in dismounted condition may be rolled up with said side bars for compactness and convenience in transportation. It will .also be understood that the curtains 14 not only serve as convenient means for sus ending the screens in such a manner that t ey are free to be percussively vibrated or jarred, but also serve as shields to prevent the material which is being screened from escaping from the sides of the screens.
While two curtainsor shields l 'l, one at each side of the separator, and both of which are provided with stretching bolts 20 for drawing the screen clothing taut, will preferably be employed, it will be within the present invention to use one yielding curtain or shield and one set of adjustable bolts 20 to enable the screen clothing to be properly stretched, as illustrated in Fig. 6, which shows one side of the screen clothing 6 attached to an angle iron or, bracket 33 bolted at 34 to a side wall 13 of the separator box or casing.
By the arrangement of the hammers shown in Fig. 3-
a crosswise jarring of the be effected, which is very advantageous in sifting some kinds of materials.
The invention is not to be understood as being limited to the details herein shown, as such details may be varied widely within the limits of mechanical skill without departing from the invention. While the suspending curtains or shields will preferably be of sheet steel or other resilient metal, they may, if desired, beof' other and somewhat stifl but flexible or elastic material, as thin one above the other (see Fig.-
- said screen clothing,
sheets of hard wood, which will serve a good purpose under some circumstances.
