To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS MACDONALD, a subject of the King of Great Britain, re-
siding at London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pantographic Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pantographic apparatus for drawing, engraving or other purposes, and in which a plane or table is attached to the pantograph, and is moved by the pantograph in such a way that the motion of the tracing point or its equivalent is reproduced in every point of such plane or table, thus replacing the drawing point of a pantograph by a drawing surface, plane or table, for the purpose of increasing the usefulness of the pantograph.
According to the invention the plane or table is mounted upon cross traveling frames and its movements take place under the restraint of controllers as herein described, and means are provided by which the controllers are kept taut at all linked and pivoted parts, whereby the efiiciency of the apparatus is increased both in regard to the operation and the quantity and variety of working usefulness.
In order to still further increase the efficiency and usefulness of the apparatus means are provided for positioning the tool so thatit will work upon any desired part of the plane or table. These means comprise a radial bar pivoted on the frame of the machine above the level of the planev or table, and upon the bar slides the holder of a positioning point linked to a sliding tool carrier, so that when the positioning point is moved to any position the tool is moved 41) to a corresponding position on the plane or table.
The tool may work downward upon the plane or table to produce copies similar to the master patterns or designs or it may 45 work upward beneath an elevated table fixed upon the plane or table controlled by the pantograph, to reverse the designs.
In the accompanying drawings Figure l is a plan showing'the positions 50 of the plane or table in relation to the pantograph and also the radial bar for positioning the tool.

In the apparatus illustrated .the main framework a, supports at one end a fixed pivot or fulcrum b for a pantograph c which has a tracing point 01, intended to be moved over the master pattern or model 6 which in the example shown happens to be aletter placed on a fixed table 7 and hereinafter referred to.
A plane or table 9 which carries the plate to be engraved or drawn upon is connected to the pantograph so that all points on its surface will make movements corresponding to the movements of the tracing point d. The table g is mounted on three studs 12 on an upper frame C which is attached to the pantograph 0, by a link it and pin 71, the link 72, being pivotally connected to the frame C between centers or screws k.
In order that the table 9 may move in its own plane in all directions the upper frame C is mounted on a middle frame B so that it can move from left to right thereon, and in turn the middle frame B is mounted on a lower stationary frame A so that it can move back and forth thereon. Anti-friction rollers Z are provided on the middle frame B for the upper frame C and similar rollers m on the lower frame A for the middle frame B.
To insure that the frames B and C shall each make definitely straight line motions relatively to the frame supporting it, controllers or parallel link motions are provided. The controllers for the frame B consist of levers n, pivoted to the lower stationary frame A at 0, and connected in pairs by links 7) which are pivotally connected to the frame B at g.
The controllers for the upper frame G consist of levers r pivoted at s to the frame C and connected in pairs by links t pivotally connected to the frame B at u.
The parallel controllers are kept taut at all their linked and pivoted parts, and
friction is reduced, by rollers 42 and w, which rest upon loose angle bars at and g, respectively, so as to be capable of rolling along them. The bars 00 and y, are supported at their ends by the frames A and B respectively, the bars being free to slide .thereon. The rollers Q) bear against a bar 2 fixed on or formed integrally with the frame B being pressed there-against by screws 3 passing through lugs 4 on a bar 5 .of the stationary lower frame A, the screws bearing against springs'6 which in turn press against the loose angle bar 09. Similarly, the rollers to bear against a bar 7 fixed on or formed integrallywith the upper frame C, being pressed thereagainst by screws 8, passing through lugs 9 on a bar 10 on the frame B, the screws bearing against springs 11 which in turn press against the loose angle bar 'y. The rollers 12 and to lie on their lower faces on the lower flanges of the respective bars or angle irons 00 and y, but are also gripped at their peripheries between the vertical flanges of said bars or angle irons and the bars 2 and 7, so that they are not found to be displaced from their proper positions in practice. Similarly the pressure transmitted by the Screws 3 and 8 holds'the bars or angle irons in pro-per position. If desired as an additional safe guard the rollers v), 10, might be grooved to receive the adjacent edges of the bars 2 and 7 and a rail on the bars at, '1. Such a modification is indicated in Fig. 4 wherein the roller 1), is shown grooved, and the bar at has a corresponding rail 00.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, a radial bar 14 is pivoted at 15 and carries two sliding holders 16, 17. The holder 16 is fitted with a lower engraving or drawing tool 18, and in some cases with an upper tool 19. The tool 18 is used for engraving or drawing upon the table 9' an exact reproduction of the design to be copied, whereas the tool 19 engraves or draws upon the underside of an elevated table 20 mounted on columns 21 on the table 9, so as to reproduce reverse designs. The sliding holder 17 carries the positioning point 22. The carriers 16, 17,
are linked together by links 23, so that when the positioning point 22 is moved to any desired position on a diagram of positions or templet of the work to be reproduced placed on the fixed table 13, the tools 18, 19, are moved into a corresponding position relatively to the tables 9 and 20 for the work.
Thus, for example, assuming that the word Engraved is to be engraved or drawn on a plate, a diagram of positions or templet of the work is placed on the fixed table 13. It is not necessary that this diagram shall be a complete design as it need only be a sheet of proper size divided into sections by cross lines or having any other convenient indications of the positions re quired. It being ascertained in which section or position the word Engraved is situated the positioning point 22 is moved to this section or position so that the tools 16, 17, are moved to corresponding 'positions on and below their respective tables. A rough outline of the word is placed on the table 7, as indicated at 24. A zinc or other model of each letter of the word is then taken in turn andplaced on the table f in line with its corresponding letter on the outline 24. F or instance a perfectly formed model 0 of the letter G is shown, its position being conveniently determined by a T square 25 running on .a straight edge 80. The tracing point (Z is then moved over the model 6, so that the letter is reproduced by the tool 16 on the table 9, or a reverse reproduction is made by the tool 17 on the table 20. The word Engraved is shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 repro duced in two different positions; The positions of the 'pantograph c and links 23, assumed for two different positions of the tracing point d are also indicated in dotted lines.
WVhen it is desired to engrave or draw ornamental borders or like work a number of tools 26 may be carried by holders 27 which may be fixed or adjustably held in position.
I claim 1. In pantographic apparatus of the kind referred to, a stationary base frame and two cross traveling frames superposed thereon, controllers for linking the two cross traveling frames together,and other controllers for linking the lower of the cross traveling frames to the stationary base frame, a table mounted on the upper of the said traveling frames, and means for holding a working tool above said table, substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
2. In pantographic apparatus of the kind referred to, a stationary base frame and two cross traveling frames superposed thereon, controllers for linking the two cross traveling frames together, and other controllers for linking'the lower of the cross traveling frames to the stationary base frame, a table mounted on the upper of the said traveling frames, means for holding a mounted on the upper of the said traveling frames, means for holding a working tool above said table and means for insuring the taut control of the movements of the frames with little friction during the parallel travel thereof, comprising two loose bars, one carried by the base frame and the other by the lower cross traveling frame, bars fixed on the base frame and lower cross traveling frame, loose rollers between and in contact with said loose bars and fixed bars, and resilient and adjustable means for maintaining said rollers in contact with said bars, substantially as hereinbefore set forth.

In pantographic apparatus of the kind referred to, a stationary base frame and two cross traveling frames superposed thereon, controllers for linking the two cross traveling frames together, and other controllers for linking the lower of the cross traveling frames to the stationary base frame, a table mounted on the upper of the said traveling frames, means for holding a working tool above said table and means for insuring the taut control of the movements of the frames with little friction during the parallel travel thereof, comprising two loose bars, one carried by the base frame and the other by the lower cross traveling frame, bars fixed on the base frame and lower cross traveling frame, loose rollers between and in contact with said loose bars and fixed bars, and resilient and adjustable means for maintaining said rollers in contact with said bars, consisting of screws carried by the lower cross traveling frame and the base frame, and springs between said screws and the aforesaid loose bars, substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
5. In pantographie apparatus of the kind referred to, a stationary base frame and two cross traveling frames superposed thereon, controllers for linking the two cross traveling frames together, and other controllers for linking the lower of the cross traveling frames to the stationary base frame, a table mounted on the upper of the said traveling frames, means for holding a working tool above said table, means for positioning said tool relatively to said table, comprising a pivoted radial bar situated above the level of the table, a carrier for the workingtool and another carrier having a positioning point, said carriers being slidably mounted on said radial bar, and links connecting said carriers for insuring movements of the same in unison, substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
6. In pantographic apparatus of the kind referred to, a stationary base frame and two cross traveling frames superposed thereon, controllers for restraining and linking the two cross traveling frames together and other controllers for restraining and linking one of the cross traveling frames to the stationary base frame, a table mounted on the other of the said traveling frames, and means for holding a tool for working upon and above the said table, substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
7. In pantographic apparatus of the kind referred to, a stationary base frame, two traveling frames superposed thereon and movable at right angles to the other, controllers pivoted intermediate their ends to one of said traveling frames and pivoted at their outer ends to the other of the traveling frames for restraining and linking the two traveling frames together, other controllers pivoted intermediate their ends to one of the traveling frames and having their opposite ends pivoted to the stationary frame for restraining and linking one of said traveling frames to the stationary base frame, a table mounted on the other of the said traveling frames, and means for holding a tool above the said table, an elevated table mounted on the aforesaid table, and
means for holding atool below the said elevated table for reversing designs, substantially as hereinbefore set forth.
