HAT-PIN-POINT PROTECTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patente (1 June 5, 1917.
Application filed December 1, 1916. Serial No. 134,451.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIS JOHNSON, acitizen of the United States, residing at Gregory, in the county of Clark, State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Hat-Pin-Point Protector5'and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in hat pin point protectors, and has for its object to provide a device of this character which has the general appearance of the head of a hat pin, and which embodies novel features of construction whereby it can be easily and quickly locked in position upon the projecting point of a hat pin.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a hat pin point protector which is comparatively simple and inexpensive in its construction, which may have an ornamental and pleasing appearance, which can be easily applied to the point of; a hat pin or removed therefrom. and which can be securely locked in operative position so that there will be no danger of the device being accidentally displaced.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel combina tions and arrangements of the parts as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the novel features thereof being pointed out in the appended claims.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a hat pin with the invention, showing the same in operative position on the end of a hat pin.

Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view on the line it-4: of Fig. 2.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
Specifically describing the present embodiment of the invention, the numeral 1 designates the body portion of the hat pin point protector, said body portion preferably having an elongated formation, and being shown on the drawing as having a substantially pear-shaped configuration. The smaller or tapered end of the pear-shaped body portion is provided with a flared mouth 2 which leads to an axial bore 3, the rear end of the bore being closed by a plate 41 so that there is no danger of the hat pin A being thrust through the guard or protector. The exterior of the body portion 1 is provided at diametrically opposite points with longitudinal channels 5 within which the forward ends of finger levers 6 are arranged. Radial guide passages 7 lead from the bore 3 at a point toward the forward end thereof to the bases of the longitudinal channels 5. Sliding jaws 8 are mounted-within the radial guide passages 7 the outer ends of the jaws being pivotally connected at 9 to the levers 6, while the inner ends of the jaws extend into the bore 3 and have the extremities thereof roughened or toothed at 10 so asto -be capable of securely gripping the shank of the hat pin A. The finger levers 6 are pivotally mounted within the channels 5 at intermediate points in their length, as indicated at 11, and springs 12 normally tend to swing the free ends of the finger levers 6 outwardly and to thereby move the jaws S inwardly into operative position. The free ends of the finger levers 6 are exposed at the rear end of the body portion 1 so that they can be readily pressed inwardly to move the jaws 8 apart and release the device from the Hat pin. The forward ends of the finger levers 6 are shown as offset inwardly at 6 and received within corresponding recesses 5 provided at the forward ends of the longitudinal channels 5. A locking ring 13 is rotatab'ly mounted upon the body portion 1 land is provided upon the interior thereof with cams 14 which are adapted to be rotated into engagement with the offset ends 6 of the finger levers 6 for the purpose of locking the finger levers and jaws in operative position. A suitable finger piece 15 may be provided for rotating the locking ring 13, and a suitable stop 16 may also be provided for limiting the rotary movement of the locking ring. When the locking ring is rotated to one limit of its movement, the cams 14 are carried away from the recesses 5 and offset ends 6 of the finger levers 6 so that the finger levers can be freely manipulated to apply the device to a hat pin or re 7 move it therefrom. If it is not desired to lock the device in position, it is not necessary to rotate the locking ring. However, in the event it may be desired to lock the device in position so that there will be no possibility of its being accidentally disengaged, the
locking ring 13 is rotated to the opposite limit of its movement, thereby bringing the cams 14 into a forcible engagement with the offset ends 6" of the finger levers. The jaws 8 are then securely held in engagement with the shank of a hat pin so that there is no dangerof the device being accidentally disengaged from the hat pin. When it is de-' sired to remove the protector, the locking ring 13 is first rotated into 'anrinoperative position and the finger levers 6 thel'i'manipulated to disengage the jaws 8 from the hat pin.
Having thusdesoribed the invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: V

A hat pin point protector including a body having an axial bore therein and provided with radial guide passages communicating with the bore, jawsmounted within 7 the guide passages and projecting into the axial bore, finger levers operatively connected to the jaws for moving them into and out of operative position, and a locking ring rotatable upon the body and provided with means for engaging the finger levers to lock the device in operat1ve position.
2. A hat pin point protector including a body, having an axial bore therein and provided with radial guide passages communicating with the bore, jaws 'slidable within the radial guide passages and projecting into the axial bore,-finger levers mounted upon the body'and operatively connected to the aws, a ring rotatable upon the body,-and
