To all whom it may concemi Be it known that I, STANLEY H. PAGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Engine- Cylinders and Jackets, of which the following is a specification. I This invention relates to internal com b #tlOIl engines and more particularly to cylinder and whereby a Water tight joint is j as provided'surroundiug the securing means and enabling the cylinder and head to be formed of a single casting and enveloped by a suitable sheet metal jacket preferably of light weight material. This construction reducing the cost of manufacture of the cylinder and jacket and permits the heatof the cooling fluid to more quickly radiatethrough the thin jacket than if the same is formed of heavy casting. This'construction alsoreduces the 'Weight of the cylinders over that type wherein the cylinder and jacket are formed in a single casting.
With'the above mentioned and other objects inview the invention consists in the novel construction'and combination of parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in' the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the claims hereto appended ;-"it being understood that-various. changes in theforni, proportion, size, and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims may be re sorted to withoutdeparting from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention;

Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1' indicates a suitable engine cylinder, preferably in the form of'a casting, and for the purposes of illustration :1 cylinder of the commonly termed, over-headvalve type 1s employed. The cylinder is provided'with the usual combustion chamber, side and head walls 2 and 3 and the usual intake and exhaust channels i, only one of which is illustrated, and it'opening as at 5 into the combustion chamber, and as at 6 to the exterior of the cylinder. 'Into said open end 6, is adapted to be secured, in any suitable manner, as by threaded attachment, a suitable islet or exhaust manifold (not shown) dependent of course upon whether the channel is employedforinlet or exhaust purposes. The material surrounding the upper end of the guide 7 pro ects upwardly above thetop of the flange 9fsurroundlng the opening5 of the channel 4 and provides a circular boss or lug 10, having vertical side walls which are'preferably threaded as at 11, and which extendin a plane perpendicular to the upper horizontal surface of the flange 9 and through saidlug or boss the guide 7 passes at an angle.
' v A Water jacket 12, preferably of sheet metal is removably positioned over the cylj inder, to-provide, a coolingchamber 13 surrounding the same, and said chamber is provided in its head Wall 14, with one or more openings 14' through each of which, one of said threaded bosses or lugs 10 is adapted to project when the jacket is positioned on the cylinder as in the drawing. The jacket 1.2 is removably held in position on the cylinder by suitable securing means 15, preferably in the form of washers or nuts having thread ed engagement with the boss 10. The clamping of the jacket head on to the flange surrounding the bosses provides, a water tight joint at this point and if desirable,
suitable packing may be interposed, between the jacket head and flange or between the securing means and jacket head.
By providing a circular boss or lug 10 having its side wallsextending in aplane perpendicular'to the flange 9 and through which the valve guide extends at arrangle, I am enabled to employ a jacket member, circular in form and having a fiat, preferably circular top or head, which rests on the up per wall surface of the flange 9 surrounding the base in the lug or boss; whereas, if the sides of the lug are parallel with the axis of the valve guide, the flange 9 is required to be beveled or inclined to lie at right angles thereto and a portion of the head of the jacket is also required to be inclined to enable the conventional form of nut or washer to be employed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In combination with a cylinder for internal combustion engines of the overhead valve type, provided with upwardly extending tubular guides in the head thereof for receiving the stems of the cylinder c0ntrolling valves, the upper ends of said guides providing bosses projecting upwardly from said cylinder, a flange surrounding the base of each boss the outer surface of said bosses disposed perpendicularly to the said flange and said guides passing through the bosses at an angle, a jacket for positioning over and surrounding the cylinder side walls in spaced relation thereto and provided with openings in its head and through each of which one of said bosses projects, and means forpositioning over saidbosses and engag ing the jacket head for removably securing said jacket in position on the cylinder with the head thereof in contact with-said flange.
2. In combination with a cylinder for internal combustion engines of the overhead valve type provided on its head with one or more tubular, externally threaded bosses extending vertically from the cylinder head and each providing a valve guide the bore of which is disposed at an angle and the exsitioning over and surrounding the cylinder side walls in spaced relation thereto and provided on its head with one or more openings through each of which one of said bosses extends, and a nut for threaded engagement with each of said bosses for contacting with said jacket head for detachably securing the jacket in position on the cylinder.
8. In combination with-a cylinder for internal combustion engines of the overhead valve type, provided with upwardly projecting guides through which the stems of the controlling valves extend the bores of said guides being disposed at an angle to each other and the outer surfaces thereof arranged perpendicular to the top wall of the cylinder in parallel spaced relation, the upper ends of said guides providing shouldered bosses, a headed jacket member for positioning over and surrounding the cylinder side walls in spaced relation thereto and provided in its head with openings through each of which one of said bosses extends, a nut for threaded attachment with said bosses for forcing said jacket head into contact with the shoulder surrounding said bosses for detachably securing the jacket in position on the cylinder.
