JAN STEYNIS, OF BAY SHORE, NEW YORK, ASSIG-NOR TO STEYNIS OZONE COMPANY, A. CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
APPARATUS FOR STERILIZATION OF LIQUIDS BY OZONE.
Specification of Iletters Patent.
Patented June 5, 1917.
Application filed November 24, 1914. Serial No. 873,702.
of Which the following is a full, clear, andcompletedisclosure.
This invention has for its object the improvement of apparatus for the sterilization by ozone of all liquids and principally of water.
These improvements relate to the apparatus in which the ozonized air is drawn into the mixing or sterilizing tank by the liquid to be sterilized and more particularly con cern the arrangement of the injectors placed at the base of the mixing tank and the arrangement of safety devices interposed between the ozonizerand the injectors.
'An apparatus comprisin the improvements which form' the sub ect of this invention is diagrammatically represented for example in. the annexed drawings.
Figure 1 is an elevation partly in section Fig. 2 is a plan view, partly in section.
, lhe mixing or sterilizing tank has at its upper end an overflow b. At the base of this tank in a horizontal plane are arranged the nozzles 0, c c 0 of the injectors. These nozzles, which may be of any number, are
arranged in the wall of the tank a and are disposed so as to direct the projected jet tangentially to the wall of the tank in such a way as to give the liquid a rotating movement intended to insure an effective mixing of the particles of water and the globules of This construction 18 obviously SIIPQIIOI to a construction in which the injecting device islocated in the interior of the reservoir, thus interfering with the mixture of the liquid and gas. I
' The pipes d which feed the-injectors are connected to the exhaust of the pump. 6 which draws liquid through the pipe f from the reservoir 9. This reservoir 9 is fed by any suitable method, referably one which insures a constant level of the liquid in the The ozonizer h is connected to the injectors by pipes it it, which are. provided with valves 2 and m respectively. A safety reservoir a is, interposed between each pipe it and the corresponding'pipe is as shown.
Each feed pipe I is prolonged to the lower part of its reservoir n the bottom of which is provided with a valve 0 adapted to open an orifice of a larger diameterthan that of the pipe is. This valve 0 is normally held upon its seat by the vacuum created in the reservoir n by the action of the injector.
If the reservoir n were omitted, and the pipes 70, 7c were connected directly together, the vacuum maintained in these pipes by the action of the injector would draw the water back into the ozonizer hit, for any reason,- the pump 6 should -cease to operate. But with my improved arrangement, if the pump ceases toope'rate, the vacuum will draw the liquid into the reservoir 11.. This will destroythe vacuum in this reservoir suficiently to allow the valve ,0 to open by gravity, and the liquid will flow off into a suitable discharge pipe 79. In this way the liquid is prevented from flowing into the ozonizer h.
My invention is not limited to the particular embodiment" shown herein, but obviously many changes may be made in the structure shown, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What I claim is:
lrln a device of the character described a mixin tank, means for injecting liquid and gas lIltO said tank, gas supplying means,
a safety reservoir, a connection between said 'gas supplying means and said. safety resersafety reservoir, a valve in said reservoir,
a connection between said gas supplying means and said reservoir and a connection between said reservoir and said in ecting means. '3. In a device of. the character described,
a mixing tank, means for injecting liquid and, gas into said tank, means for supplying liquid to said injecting means, gas supplying means connected to said injecting means, and a safety reservoir interposed in the connections between the gas supplying means and the injecting means whereby the liquid is prevented from enterin the gas supplying means in case of the tailure of said liquid supplying means.

4. In a device of the characterdescribed, a mixing tank, means for injecting liquid and gas into said tank, said means being so constructed that the liquid and the gas in the tank are given a rotary movement, gas supplying means, a safety reservoir, a connection between said gas supplying means and said safety reservoir, and a connection between said safety reservoir and said injecting means.
5. In a device of the character described, a mixing tank, means for injecting liquid into said tank, said means being so constructed that the liquid in the tank is given a rotary movement, gas supplying means, a safety reservoir, a valve in said reservoir, a connection between said gas supplying means and said reservoir, "and a connection between said reservoir and said injecting means. i
6. In a device of the character described, a mixing tank, means for injecting liquid and gas into said tank, gas supplying means,
a safety reservoir provided with a valve "adapted tobe held closed during thevoperaa mixing tank, means for injecting liquid into said tank, gas supplying means, a safety reservoir, a valve in said reservoir, a connection between said gas supplying means and said reservoir, and a connection between said reservoir and said injecting means, adapted, during the operation of the injecting means, to exert a suction Within said reservoir to hold said valve-closed, and when the injecting means ceases to operate, to rehave the suction and permit said valve to open.
