To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ANDERS CONRAD HAN- soN, a citizen of Sweden, residing at Stanton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Miter-Knives, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in miter knives.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a cutting device after the nature of tongs or pliers whereby the cover strips of molding for screens are readily severed at the desired angle required for fitting the screen frame.
A further object of the device is the provision of a cutter having jaws operable in parallel planes during the employment of the device upon the work, a single closing of the jaws being designed for severing a molding strip forming a desirable miter edge.
A still further object of the structure is the provision of a miter cutter having means for holding the work at different predetermined positions for accurately cutting the same forming uniform ends thereon, a readily removable and adjustable blade being advantageously combined with the structure.
In the drawing forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure. 1 is a side elevation of the device in its normal open position partially broken away.

Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken upon line 44 of Fig. 1.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, it will be noted that the device broadly consists of two levers 10 and 11 connected together by a tongs-joint having a pivoting bolt 12, a cutting blade 14 being adjustably and removably attached to one end of the lever 10 by means of a mounting plate 15 and a cutting block 16 carried by the lever 11 at a point opposite the said blade and in a plane erpendicular with respect thereto.
Eacii of the levers 10 and 11 is bifurcated at both sides of its pivotal connection 12, the aforementioned plate 15 being arranged within the bifurcations of both of said levers, the same being pivotally connected by' a bolt 17 with the forward end of the lever 10 and having an open slot 18 at its rear end slidably mounted upon a cross pin 19 of the lever 11 rearwardly of the pivot bolt 12. The blade 14 is arranged within a slot 20 of the plate 15, which plate, however, may be formed of two separate fiat cotiperating members with the blade 14 positioned therebetween and maintained in its adjusted position by screws 21 adapted for adjusting the sections of-the plate 15 upon the said blade. The blade 14 is substantially L-shaped having a cut-away portion 22 for the accommodation of the screws 21 while the same is also provided. with a grooved and toothed surface 23 for preventing the blade from slipping when in its operative arrangement and engaged by a rib 13 carried by the adj acent side portion of the plate 15. v
The cutting block 16 is somewhat the shape of an arrow head having a rectangular shank 24 pivoted to the forward end of the handle 11 by means of a bolt 25 while a slot 26 is arranged in the rear end of the shank slidably mounted upon a transverse bolt 27 within the bifurcated portion of the lever 10 rearwardly of the pivot bolt 12. A transverse groove 28' is provided in the shank 24 and a similar groove 29 in the inner edge of the plate 15, the said grooves being adapted for accommodating and fitting over the pivot bolt 12 when the blade and cutting block are brought together during the operation of the device and at which times the inner face 30 of the shank 24 is positioned substantially in contact with the inner edge 31 of the plate 15.
The members hereinbefore described are preferably formed of metal while a hardwood strip 32 is slidably positioned in dovetailed arrangement centrally of the receiving face of the cutting block 16, a dovetailed slot 33 being provided for the reception of the said strip 32. It will be understood that the strip 32 may be formed of other material than wood if desired, such as Babbitt metal, the same being in a position to be engaged by the cutting edge 34 of the blade 14 in the cutting operation. The block 16 is adaptedfor the reception of the work such as moldings arranged flatly thereon to becut and extending at the desired angle transversely of thestrip 32, spaced forward and rearward pairs of guides lugs 35 and 36 respectively, being provided upon the said block while the rear edge of the block is rearwardly divergent and provided with upstanding flanges 37 terminating at their inner ends adjacent the opposite edges of the strip 32.
A spring 38 is arranged beween the levers 10 and 11 and coiled around a mounting pin 39 within the bifurcated portion of the lever 11 adapted for normally maintaining the blade 14 out of contact with the cutting block 16.
The rear end portions of the levers 10 and 11 form operating handles 40 and 41 respectively, to be grasped and operated after the manner of a pair of pliers for performing the cutting operation, a short length spring 42 being hinged to the free end of the handle 40 and provided with a hook 48 for engaging over an extension 44 at the free end of the handle 41 for maintaining the blade edge 34 in contact with the cutting block strip 32 when the device is'not desired for use.
In operation, a screen molding such as indicated by dotted lines at 45 in Fig- 2 may be inserted between one of the lugs 36 and the adjacent flange 37 obliquely across the strip 32 when desired to cut the molding in miter and at an angle, it being understood that when a straight transverse cutting of the molding is desired, the latter is positioned between the lugs 35 and 36 in perpendicular arrangement with respect to the strip 32 as well as the cutting edge 34 and by forcing the handles 40 and 41 together, the molding will be severed as the occasion may require.
The-blade 14 may be secured within the plate 15 at different adjustments by means of" the screws 21 adapting the same for cutting molds of different thicknesses. The device is serviceable in easily and quickly cutting moldings in miter for employment in securing screen cloth to screen frames. The handles 40 and 41 are preferably pressed out of iron plate with the bifurcated portions thereof formed integral therewith, it being understood that by removing the bolts 17 and 25, the plate 15 and the block 16 may be removed from the levers 11 and 10 respectively, while the form of mounting therefor Copies of this patent may be obtained for herein set forth arranges the cutting edge 34 at all times parallel with respect to the block 16 and the contact strip 32.
What I claim as new is L 1. A miter knife comprising pivoted levers, a cutting block pivoted to one of said levers having rearwardly diverging portions of V-shape extending to opposite sides of the levers and formed with upright flanges upon the working face of the said block, workengaging guide lugs carried by the said block spaced from the said flanges, one face 'each of two of said lugs being parallel to the adjacent upright flange, the other two faces of said two lugs, and two faces of the remaining lugs being parallel, and a cutting blade carried by the other lever, whereby the desired direction-angle and straight edge may be cut.
2. A miter knife comprising pivoted levers, a cutting block pivoted to one of said levers having rearwardly diverging portions formed with upright flanges upon the working face of the said block, work-engaging guide lugs carried by the said block spaced from the said flanges, a knife'engaging strip arranged centrally of the cutting block between the said lugs and flanges, a plate pivoted to the adjacent end of the other lever, movement limiting pins carried by said levers for the said block and plate, and a cutting blade adjustably carried by the plate having a cutting edge arranged parallel to the said strip.
3. A cutting knife comprising pivoted levers, a substantially arrow head shaped work-engaging cutting block having a shank pivoted to the forward end of one of said levers and arranged with a slot in its rear end, a guide pin carried by the other one of said levers arranged within said slot, work-positioning lugs and flanges upon the said plate, a cutting strip of relatively softer material having dove-tailed engagement centrally of said block and a cutting knife arranged adjacent said block.
