ALOUIS L. WINNEGA, DECEASED, LATE OF PRESTON, MINNESOTA, BY LILY M. WINNEGA, ADMINISTRATRIX, OF PRESTON, MINNESOTA, ASSIGNOR TO OSCAR W. CLARK, OF
czansco, IOWA.
To all whom, it may concern.
Be it known that ALoUIs L. WINNEGA, deceased, late a citizen of the United States residing at Preston, county of Fillmore, State of Minnesota, did invent a new and useful Gate-Latch, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to gate latches.
My object is to provide an improved latch for gates, particularly those which are vertically movable and are adapted to swing, and to that end, it consists of improved rockably mounted latches adapted to engage a latching bar; and, further, a locking device of improved construction combined with the latch in a novel manner.
A practical embodiment of the invention is set forth hereinafter and disclosed in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of a gate equipped with the improved latch, the gate being locked in lowered position;
Fig. 2 a similar view, the gate being unlatched in raised position;
Fig. 3 an enlarged detail perspective of the latch when freed or released; and
Fig. 4, a detail plan view, partly in dotted lines, showing the manner of locking the latch.
To illustrate the adaptability of the invention to a vertically movable swinging gate, it is shown thereon in Figs. 1 and 2.
The sill (which may be omitted) is shown at 1, the posts at 2, eyebolts 3 rotatable and slidable within tube 4 ofgate 5. The tube is secured to the gate by brackets 6.
To the latching post is secured a vertical latching rod 7 The latches 8 and 9 are rigidly secured to a shaft or bar 10' which is journaled in the bracket 11 carried by the front angle piece 12 of the gate 5. The uppermost latch 8 is shown in detail in Fig. 4 and is different from the latch 9 in the addition of stop ears 13. The latches 8 and 9 are bifurcated, thus providing fingers 14 and 15 which are rounded at their outer ends, enabling the latches to readily rock into or out of en gagement with the bar or rod 7 The uppermost latch 8 has a notch 16. Pivoted at 17 to the front angle piece 12 is a lever 18 which is retracted by spring 19 connected to it and to the angle piece 12. A locking Specification of Letters Patent.
GATE-LATCH.
Patented May 29, 1917.
Divided and this application filed September 25,
To elevate and lower the gate there may be provided the following devices: a bracket 25, an angle bar 24, having sheave 26; flexible connection 27 secured at 28; a locking lever 29 pivoted at 30 and having crooked end 31.
The connection 27 is fastened to lever 29 at 32. The end 31 can be engaged with wire or rod 33 to hold the gate raised, as shown in Fig. 2.
The present application is a continuation or division of Serial No. 25,553, gates, filed May 3, 1915 by Alouis L. Winnega, deceased.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is:
In a gate latch, the combination with a latching rod or keeper, of upper and lower horizontally disposed bifurcated latches, a
rod or shaft which carries said latches and by which they are rockably mounted to one or the other of the lugs to limit the move in unison in a horizontal plane, one of lateral swinging of the latches.
said latches being provided with a notch and In testimony whereof, I hereunto aflix my 1o with lugs or shoulders on opposite sides of signature.
' said notch, and a manually retractable slid- LILY M. WINNEGA,
able locking bolt adapted to be received in Administmtrim of the estate of Alom's L. the notch to lock the latches or to engage Winnega, deceased.
