WATER-HEATING APPARATUS.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known .that I, SAMUEL LEAVITT, a citizen'of the United States, residing at Chicago, in .the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ater-Heating Apparatus, of which .the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in an apparatus to be used for heating water for domestic or household purposes, and it consists in certain peculiarities of the construotion, novel arrangement and operation of the various parts thereof, as will be here inafter-more fully set forth and specifically claimed.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a water heating apparatus of the above-described general character, which shall be simple and inexpensive in construc tion, strong, durable, and-efficient in operation, with its parts so made and operating as to cause a quantity of water to be heated in a very short time, or much more quickly than has generally heretofore been accomplished by water heaters of the ordinary or common construction.
Another object of my invention is to provide a water heating apparatus which shall be compact and complete in form, embodying a support for a tank or reservoir, a water heater, means for withdrawing sediment or water directly from the said heater, if desired, and a housing for the heater and fuel-burner, which heater can be easily attaohed to a reservoir of the ordinary or well known type by the employment of .a single coupling or tubular member, thus avoiding the necessity of forming numerous openings in the parts, ,as well as, dispensing with many pipes and fittings which are usually required.
Various other objects and advantages of the invention will be disclosed in the subjoined description and explanation.

Like numerals of reference, refer to corresponding parts throughout the different views of the drawings.
The reference numeral 7 designates a tank or reservoir of the ordinary or any preferred construction, which has extended thereinto from its upper end or upper portion a cold water supply pipe 8 which (terminates at its lower end near the bottom of the reservoir as is clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing. The reservoir 7 is provided at its upper end or upper portion, with an outlet or service pipe .(not shown) which is used for With-.
drawing hot water from the tank. In its lower end or bottom, the reservoir 7 is provided with a central opening 9 in which is screw-threaded or fitted a conduit or pipe which is designated as a whole by the reference numeral 10, and as is clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawing, has its upper end internally screw-threaded as at 11 to engage the lower end of a pipe 12 which is extended upwardly within the reservoir (7 to .near .the top thereof. By 'referring to Figs. 1, 2, and 3, of the drawing it Will be seen that the middle portion of the conduit 10 or pipe is enlarged and externally screwthreaded as at 13, for the purpose of engaging the opening 9, in the bottom of thetank, as well as the openings Y14 and 15 in the .top of the housing 16 and the heater 1.7 respectively, as will be clearly understood by reference to Fig. 1 of the drawing. The pipe or conduit 10 is provided with a .pair of channels 18 and 19 which extend through the lower end of said pipe and are separated by a partition 20 as is clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing. Each of the channels 18 and 19 has an opening 21 through the walls of the pipe or conduit 10, just above the enlargement 13 therein through which cold water from the tank 7 or reservoir may pass into the channels 18 and 19 and from thence through the lower end of the member 10 into the heater 17, and near the bottom thereof. The pipe or conduit 10 is also provided with a pair of channels 22 and 23 which are separated by a longitudinal partition 24 which extends to near the upper end of the said pipe as is clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawing, in which figures it will be observed that the channels 22 and 23 communicate at their upper ends with the screwthreaded opening 11 of said pipe. At their lower extremities each of the channels 22 and 23 is provided with an opening 25 through the walls of the pipe, through which hot water from the heater may pass upwardly through the channels 22 and 23 and from thence through the pipe 12, to be dis charged in the upper portion of the reservoir.
The heater 17 may be of any suitable size, form, and material, but by preference is substantially spherical in shape, with its upper and lower portions slightly flattened. It is also, by preference provided externally with indentations or recesses 26, thus thinning portions of the walls of the heater 17, so as to permit the heat from the fuel burner 27, to have quick action on the water contained in the heater. As shown in Fig. 1, of the drawing, the heater 17 has communicating with its lower portion, at the center thereof a pipe 28 which has mounted on its lower portion a coupling 29 to which is connected a horizontal pipe 30 which is extended through the side wall of the housing 16, and is equipped at its outer side with a faucet 31 to control the flow of water through the pipes 30 and 28. The lower end of the coupling 29 is provided with a screwplug which may be removed when it is desired to drain the heater 17 of any sediment that might collect therein. The burner 27 surrounds the pipe or tube 28 and has connection through a pipe 32 with the supply of fuel, such as gas, gasolene, or the like. The housing 16 has in its wall a doorway 33 which may be closed or opened entirely or partially by means of a door 34 of the usual or common construction, which is by preference provided with a damper, (not shown) in order to furnish air and oxygen to the interior of the housing. At its upper portion the housing is provided with an outlet or flue 35 for the escape of unconsumed products of combustion, and for the purpose of creating a draft through the housing. By reference to Fig. 1, of the drawing, it will be seen that the housing 16 is mounted on a standard 36 which latter is mounted on a base 37, and that said base, standard, housing, and coupling or member 10 will aflord a support for the lower end of the reservoir.
In Fig. 4, of the drawing, is shown a modification in the construction of the water conveying conduit or pipe, which connects the reservoir 7 and the heater 17, and which conduit or pipe consists of a tubular member 38 which has its middle portion enlarged and screw-threaded as at 13, as before, and also has its upper end internally screwthreaded as at 11, as before. In this modified form of the water conveying conduit or pipe, the pipe 12 is screwed or fitted into or on to the upper end thereof as in the other construction, but by referring to Fig. 5, it will be seen that the pipe or member 38 is provided with two channels 39 and 40, the channel 39 having an opening 41 just above the enlarged portion 13, of the member 38 and another opening 42 just below said enlarged portion, while the channel 40 extends entirely through the member 38, but is divided from the channel 39, by means of Vertical partition 43. Below the enlarged portion 13, of the member 38 and near the lower end thereof said member is provided in its wall with an opening 44 as is clearly shown in Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawing. In using the modified construction of the water conveying conduit or pipe 38 shown in Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawing, it is evident that cold water from the reservoir 7 will enter the opening 41 of the channel 39, and pass through said channel and out through the opening 42 into the upper portion of the heater 17, and that the hot water in the heater will pass up through the opening in the lower end of the member 38 and through the opening 44 of said member and from thence through the channel 40 and out through the pipe 12 from which it will be discharged into the upper portion of the reservoir.
From the foregoing and by referring to the drawing, it will be seen and clearly understood, that by my improved construction of a water heating apparatus, water may be quickly heated and drawn directly therefrom through the pipes 28 and 30 and the faucet 31, or if desired the hot water ascending from the heater 17, through the conduit connecting the said heater and reservoir, and from thence through the pipe 12, may be drawn ofl through the service pipe (not shown) for use.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to se cure by Letters Patent is 1. In a water heating apparatus, the combination with a reservoir, a water heater and a single pipe directly connecting said reservoir and heater, said pipe having a plurality of channels extended longitudinally thereof, at least one of said channels having communication at one of its ends with the reservoir near its bottom for the outlet therefrom of cold Water into the said heater, and at least another of said channels having communication through its upper end and the upper end of said pipe with the reservoir and through its lower end with the heater near the bottom thereof, a fuel burner located below the said heater and being independent thereof, a housing surrounding said burner and heater and mounted on the aforesaid pipe, means to support the housing at its bottom, a drain pipe leading from the lower portion of the heater and having a section extended from its lower part through the housing to assist in sup porting the latter, a faucet on the outer portion of said sectional pipe, and a supply pipe leading from a source of fuel supply through the Wall of the housing and connecting with said fuel burner.
2. In a water heating apparatus the combination with a reservoir, of a heater, a single pipe directly connecting said reservoir and heater, said pipe having longitudinal partitions dividing it into a plurality of channels in each direction closed at opposite ends and also having openings leading into each of said channels from the walls of said pipe near said closed ends of the channels, a pipe communicating with the lower portion of the heater and having a section extended from its lower part through the housing to assist in supporting the latter, a faucet on said pipe, means to apply heat to said heater, and a supported housing for the heater.
3. In a water heating apparatus, the combination with a reservoir, of a heater, a single pipe directly connecting said reservoir and heater, said pipe having a central longitudinal partition dividing its middle portion into two channels closed at opposite ends and also having a passage leading into each of said channels from the side of said pipe near the closed ends of the channels to admit cold water from the reservoir, said pipe also having a central longitudinal partition at right angles to the first named partition dividing its middle portion into two channels closed at opposite ends and also having a passage leading into each of said channels from the side of said pipe near the closed ends of the last named channels to admit water from the heater, a pipe communicating with the upper portion of said channeled pipe and extended upwardly into the reservoir, a fuel burner located beneath said heater, a housing surrounding said heater and mounted on the channeled pipe, a support for the said housing and burner and a pipe communicating with the heater and extending through the housing and having means to control the flow of liquid therethrough.
