INDEX DEVICE.
APPLICATION FILED 1ULY19.I916.
Patented May 29, 1917 DOE' JOHN JAMESH. BAND, 6F NORTH TONAWANDA, YORK.
INDEX DEVICE,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 299, 191%.
Application filed July 19, 1916. Serial No. 110,206.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES H. RAND, a citizen of the United States, and resident of North Tonawanda, in the county of Niagara and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Index Devices,
of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to indexes ofthe so-calledvisible index type, andcons ists in the improvements hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings. which illustrate'certain embodiments of the invention,-
Figure 1 is a face view of a part of an index containing the invention, parts being broken away;
Fig. 2 is a vertical cross section on an en ends of retaining strips or bars B which are removably and slidably mounted therein. A series of cards or sheets C, which may be made of paper'or similar material, and- I 'which may be as light and thin as'desired,
are supported in the frame in spaced relation by means of the strips B. .Eachindex element is provided also with a. sheath D of transparent resilient material such as sheet celluloid, preferably having a closed front face and inturnedor bent-over lips extending lengthwise of the longer sides of the sheath.
In the form shown in Fig. 2, the lower lip a? is bent to form the lower or inner edge of the sheath, and the upper lip isvbent rearwardly as shown at d to form the upper or outer edge of the sheath and thence inwardly as shown at d to overlap the edge of the lower lip d. The retaining strip B sub-.
stantially fills the interior space within the sheath with only suflicient clearance to admit the folded margin of the sheet C, as hereinafter described.
The sheet 0 has its margin folded over one or'inore edges of the retaining strip B and is held thereby within the sl 1eath between the sheath annl the retalning strip without cement or other securement, while the body of the sheet C extends outward from the sheath between the lips 03 and (2- Said folded margin extends completely across the front face of the retaining strip B to forman indicator surface 0, on which may be inscribed the index titles or other characters according to the uses to which the index is put. In the form shown in Fig. 2 the margin is folded under the lower edge of the strip B and thence outwardly through the space between the lips, and is also folded over the top or outer edge of the strip B and thence downwardly or. inwardly across the rear surface. In this form the folded margin extends substantially completely around the retaining strip B and affords not only firm securement for the sheet C but also an.
indicator surface within the sheath for receiving inscriptions on both sides of the device.
In the form shown in Fig. 3, the lower or inner lip of the sheath D is bent backwardly as shown at d and thence upwardly as shown at 03 while the top lip is bent backwardly as shown at d, and thence downwardly as shown at (l The folded margin of the card C extends across the front face of. the retaining strip B to form the indicator surface 0, and thence around the lower or inner part of the retaining strip B and outward 'through the space between the retaining strips, whence the body of sheet C extends downwardly substantially flatwise of the sheath.
In the formshown in Fig. 4, the sheath D has the lower lip bent rearwardly as shown at d, and upwardly as shown at d, and the upper retaining lip bent rearwardly as shown at d and thence downwardly as shown at d, the part at overlapping the part d. The folded margin of the sheet O extends across the face of the strip B as before, to form the indicator surface a, thence around the lower edge of the retaining strip B, and thence over the upper edge of thelip d and outward through the'space between the ,lips 01 and d The sheaths D preferably terminate short of the guide channels of the frame A so that the uncovered ends of the strips B, which may be of bristolboard or. other suitable stifi' resilient material, will be insured .a free sliding en agement with the guide channels of the rame.
l[ claim:
1. An index device comprising a sheath.
having bent-over lips, a retaining strip removably held Within said sheath, and a sheet having its margin held within the sheath between the sheath and-the retaining strip, the body of the sheet extending out of the sheath between said lips.
2. An index device comprising a sheath having bent-over lips, a retaining strip removably held Within said sheath, and a sheet having its margin held within the sheath between the sheath and the retaining strip and folded over one edge at least of the retaining strip, the body of the sheet extending out of thesheathbetween said lips.
3. An index device comprising a sheath having bent-over lips, a retaining-strip re movably held within said sheath, and a sheet having its margin folded part way at least around said retaining strip and held within said sheath without other securement, the body of the sheet extending out of the sheath between said lips.
4. An index device comprising a sheath having bent-over lips, a retaining strip remimosa movablv held Within said sheath, and a sheet having its margin extending completely across the front face of the retaining'strip to form an indicator surface and being folded over one edge at least of the retaining strip and held within said sheath without other securement, the body of the sheet extending out of the sheath between said lips.
55. An index device comprising a sheath having bent-over lips, a retaining strip removably held within said sheath, and an indicator sheet extending across one, face of the retaining strip and folded part way at least around the retaining strip, and held within the sheath Without other securement.
6. An index device comprising a sheath having bent-over lips, a retaining strip removably held within said sheath, and a sheet having its margin folded substantially completely around said retaining strip and held within said sheath without other securement.
