MARIA DoUJAK, or NEW YORK,

OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
' WIND-SHIELD.
' specification of Letters Patent.
PatenteaMay 29, 1917.'
'Application led .Tune 21, 1916. Seriall No. 105,090.
T o all Awhom it may .concern 4 Be it known that I, MARTA DoUJAK, a subject'ofthe Emperor Aot Austria, and a resident .of New York, in the county of New York and 'State of New York,' have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVind-Enhields,` of whichthe follow-V ing is a specification.
This invention relates in wind-shields, .as applied to vehicles, and the principal object of theinvention is to provide a wind-shield having an adjustable portion which may be positioned soas to be protected against moisture as from rain or snow, whereby its transparency might be.
A second object is to provide such windshields in forms readily attachable to existing vehicles as well as new constructions These and other objects are attained by the novel construction and. combination ofparts hereinafter described, and lshown 1n terial part ot this speciiicatiom and 1n whicht l` Figure 1 is a perspective view of a conventional type of automobile7 showing the application of the invention.-
Fig. 2 is an end view of the wind-shield.
Fig.- 3 is a vertical sectional view of the same taken, on line 3-3 of Fig. `4.
Fig. 4 is a front-elevation of the shield.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view I removable bottom wall lot' the device.
. movable panel Fig. 7 is another perspective view, showhinged, upper` panel of thel Fig. 6 is a. similar perspective view. showing the folding endcasings, whereby the is held extended.
ing in detail the shield` `Fig. 8 'is a fragmental perspective view showing a detail of'construction, an
9 is a similar ragmental detail illustrating themanner of holdin-g the platesin position.
' The invention is comprised of a rigid frame having side elements 15. the ysame be ing connected by a cross barl at the top, a similar-bar 17 being'secure'd at the bottom. and provided with means for attachment to the dash b oard or front hicle.
' yWithin "hecasing .are two uprights 20, secured at their tops and bottoms respectively to the rails 16 and 17, forming an 1nT to v iniprovements a rigid structure.
'drawing'forming a ma- .bars 20, by means o showing the portion of thevve It is to be understood that these plates are permanently aliixed, while a swinging central' plate 23 is engaged by'hinge's 24 tothe top rail 16, the plate being contained in a `rame`25,further engaged by stems having button heads 28, adapted to turn after entering slotted openings 30, for-med'in the front rail 32 of `the .bottom plate33` in such manner that when engaged therewith as to form The swinging plate 23 is made of glass or other like transparent material, so that the operator can see clearly through it, thereby A being able todirect the vehicle. lThe bot-, tom plate 33 is stiiened by side flanges 34 extending upward alongits outer edges, and has a downturned flange 35 at the extremefront adapted, when in an extended position to engage with the rail 17.
A pair of sidev plates 40 are held in a triangular fraine.42 disposed along edges, and are removably engaged with the upright thooks 43v adapted to enter corresponding 'openings made in the lugs 44 formed with the bars.
In order to prevent the water ing the transparent plate Q3, a trough 45 is provided at' the top of the struc-ture, the same being intended to catch any water which may. flow from over the `root of the vehicle, and carry it awav to the sides in such manner that it will not interfere with the transparency of the plates employed.
In operation. the plate elements Q3 and 33 are placed in the position indicated in Fig.- 1, the side1 plates 40 being secured b v the hooks forminga rigid attachment whereby the plates are securelyv held in their angular` position.
Thefspeciic use of the device is during storms' only. as under normal conditions the plate 2.3 will occupy the entire opening between the bars 20 and have the usual appearance of .ran ordinary wind-shield. the lower or bottom plate 33 and triangular side plates 40 being removed and stored in anir convenient place with the vehicle.
' Having thus described niv invention. what I claim as new anc vdesire to secure b v Letters Patent, is f- In a wind-shield, the combination with. a fixed frame, of a pair of vertical bats dividi 11151 'rame into sections, transparent panels red between the outerelements'of said raise and said bars, a central transparent panel hinged at its t'op to the upper member 5 of said frame, a plate removably engageable with the lower member of sald frame, means for engaging said plate to sa1d central panel at one edge thereof,
sald plate to he 70 frame. a :pair of triangular transparent untween sald central BEST AVAILABLEICOP lyielding plates suited to ll the opening bepaneland said vertical bars when said panel is in an angular position, and means for bars.
Slgned yai; New York, in the county of of New York, and State of New York, this 31st day of May, A. D. 1916.
