IMPROVENI ENT IN HEATING-STOVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,746, dated January 16, 1872.
and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in Franklin stoves and grates, which require the draught to be increased by the aid of ablower. I make the blower answer as well the purpose of a hearth to the stove or grate, it being attached to the stove or grate in any convenient way, and when down in a horizontal position, and at right angles, or nearly so, to the front of thestove or grate, forms such hearth; and when swung up so as to close the opening in the front of the stove, with the exception of an orifice or orifices left at or along the bottom of the blower for the passage of air to the lower portion of the grate-bars, forms a blower proper. Thereby the said two elements are constituted of one and the same piece, doing away with said independent elements as such.
By thus combining the blower and hearth in one l derive many advantages, some of `which are: doing away wlth the necessity of a stand or place for the blower, the great convenience of having the blower at hand to be applied whenever desired, and less expense attending the manufacture.
The combined blower and hearth may be attached so as to be permanent to the stoveor grate, or so as to be detachable therefrom at pleasure.
In the drawing is shown a mode in which this combined blower and hearth may be arranged to the stove or grate.
At the lower front portion of the ash-pit opening of a stove or grate, A, I make two slots, B B. At the base of the blower I construct two hooked lugs, C C, which pass into these slots, and which, when the blower D is down in a horizontal position, bear against the under side of the plate of the ash-pit; and thus, the blower resting upon that portion of the ash-pit plate which projects a short distance from the front of the stove or grate, it is supported and kept in a rigid position as a hearth.
When it is desired -to use this part D as a blower proper, it is swung up until it covers the opening in the front ofthe stove or grate, and it may be held there by a catch or vertical spring-bolt taking into a recess in the upper edge thereof, as shown at E, or by any other convenient means of retention. One or more openings can be made in the blower at the lower portion thereof, as shown at F, for the feeding of air to the grate-surface.
Claim.
A blower and hearth-piece for a Franklin stove or grate, when the same are constructed of one and the same piece and attached, arranged, and operating as described.
