My invention relates to iuprovements in automatic -drain valves. v
Ithas l'o' its object: to provide an automatically operated drain valve for use in conn'eetioi with the st eam eylinders of locomoti ves and other engines steam pipes and the lilt'e which remains normally open when the stean prcssure thereon is released, to allow the water ot' eondensation' to be drained therethrengh, and closes by stean pressure int'oduced tl'rongh the steam inlet.

The purpose ot the sharp eutting edges is to remove any foreign mat-ter which may mremnulate iu the plug and retard its operation l' v applyiug a serewdriver to the slot Q-l in the projeetion 23 and then .turning the valve and stern, and in order to aecomplish this it is only necessary to remove the high pressure pipe to get access to the slot 24 and it. does not require the lisnenherment or taking apart of the sevrral parts of the drain valve.
I\ spiral spring 28 is mounted on the teni 25 between the disk 22 and the shoulder if) and serves to normally retain the disi( against the top of the ehanber 7 and thus hold the valve in its open position until steani pres-sure from the high pressure inh-t l'orees the disk downward and eloses the valve and ports.
lv reason of the several by-pass ports being formed directly in the members, by hoi-ing, pipes are entirely dispensed with, and by reason ot' the plug member bodily rarrying the valve, valve stem and spring they cau be removed and also inserted with out being taken out of the plug memberor being displaced.
In operation steam under pressure passes through the high pressure inlet pipo and lollow extension 4 into the' ehamber 7 and l'orees the valve 21 down upon its lower seat, 'l'orned by the upper edge of the plug member 3, eompresses the spiral spring 28 and eloses the by-pass high pressure ports E) and when the valve is released from the steam pressure the spring 28 expands and *toi-ces the valve against its upper seat in the top of the chamber 8, whereupon all the condensed steam or water passes through the chamber 7, by-pass high pressure ports 9 and also the ehamber 18 and thence through the longitudinal ehannels in the stem of the valve and the hollow portion 17 of the inner member or plug to the exhaust pipe.
I do not wish to be nnderstood as limit- -ing myself to the specific details of constrnction and arrangement as herein described and illustrated, as it is manfest that .variations and modfications may be made in the features of Construction and arrangementin the adaptation of the devee to the various conditions of use without departing from the spirit and scope providing a valve seat, a valve member having an importet-ate disk head eoperating with said seat, and 'a solid gniding stem in said outlet, and means 'for retaining said valve in a normally open position.
2. In a drain valve, an outer member, an inner member, a 'valve mouuted in the inner member and provided with a pluralit v of substantially straight grooves and straight eutting edges between said grooves, said valve adpted to be, positively rotated to remove any foreign matter which may aceumulate in the inner member.
3. A drain valve comprising a member provided with a ehamher and an inlet thei-eto, by-pass ports of substantially uniform cross-section in said ehamber, a second member provided with an ontlet and having a free upper end terminating at substantially the lower end of the by-pass ports and providing a valve seat substantially in'aliuement with the end of said ports, a valve member having an imperforate disk head eoperating with said seat, and an elongated solid guiding stern in said outlet provided with longitudinally extendiug external grooves and means for retaining said valve in a normally open position contzined within said `inner member.
