Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. ALLEN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Service-Pipes for IVater-Storage Systems, &c., of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates more particularly to service pipes which supply water from a general supply system to water storage systems such as for instance employed in connection with so-called sprinkler systems and other fire extinguishing systems. In storage systems of this character the water is generally stored at a higher level than it can be supplied by the pressure commonly maintained in the water supply systems of cities and whatever means are employed to elevate the water to such higher level they are not proof against leakage, nor can the check valve ordinarily employed in the serv ice pipe be absolutely relied upon to prevent such leakage and thus a slight leakage might constantly take place from the storage system back into the water supply sys tem from which the domestic user derives his supply. Considering the large number of storage systems of this and like character in use in big cities all of which may be supplied from and communicate with the same source, the leakage from these systems consisting mostly of water which has become foul and unwholesome from long standing may become an ever present and unsuspected source of contamination of the water in the supply system and be the direct cause of spreading typhoid fevers and like diseases resulting from the use of impure water.
It is the object of this invention to prevent contamination of the water in the supply system from possible leakage which may take place from a storage system by reason of a leaky check valve in the service pipe when there is a difference in pressures and to this end the invention consists in a system provided with a check valve of a novel character as shown and described in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1, shows diagrammatically in elevation a fire extinguishing system of general character embodying my invention, and Fig. 2, is a detached section of the check valve.
In the drawings, A represents the street main of a water distributing system; B the service pipe leading therefrom; C the water cisterns into which the service pipe discharges; I) the power pump which draws the water from the cisterns through the pipe E, F the elevated storage tank into which the pump discharges, G the sprinkler pipes, H the shut-off valve in the service pipe and I the check valve.
In the normal condition of the fire extinguishing systems shown the pressure of the water in the system is supposed to be considerably higher than that in the street main, and the pump is at a stand still. It is obvious then that this high pressure will be present in the cistern and thus there will be a high pressure opposed against a lower pressure on the check valve I. Instead of this check valve being of the usual character, I use a double check valve as shown in Fig. 2 in which a. a are two valve disks connected by a common valve stem 6 and provided with seats in the valve casing, the valves when seated cooperating with the casing to form a chamber 0, this chamber is provided with a discharge opening d. With a check valve of this character it will be seen that with the valve disks properly adjusted to their seats, there can be no escape of water from the opening (Z except what may be due to leakage around the valve disks and this will be conducted away provided the leakage is not beyond the capacity of the drain passage (Z but if it should be the force of the stream issuing from the drainage pipe calls the attention of the engineer at once to the faulty condition of thevalve. and he can readily ascertain if the leakage comes from the storage side or from that of the supply pipe by closing the valve II. As long as the leakage does not escape under pressure which he can tell by looking at it the valve performs its intended function.
The opening (Z need be but relatively small, to accomplish the object of my invention since the appearance of water issuing through the opening would indicate the faulty condition of the valve, and it will not interfere with the operation of the fire extinguishing system, since the amount of water which would escape through it in case of the valve being lifted from its seat in the operation of the system would be a negligible quantity.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is The combination with a water supply system adapted to supply the water under pressure and a storage system in communication therewith through a supply pipe and adapted to store the water at a height above that to which it will be supplied by the supply system, of a stop cock in the supply pipe and an automatic check valve in the supply pipe bet-ween the stop cock and the storage system, said check valve comprising two coacting valve disks of equal area spaced apart and forming in conjunction with their casing achamberintermediate said valve disks, and a drainage pipe forming an unrestrainable outlet from said chamber into the atmosphere.
