5 of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Type-Writing and Computing Machines, of i which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to computing machines, and is herein illustrated as applied to a combined typewriting and computing machine of the Underwood Hanson type in which, a "series .of jacks are successively moved by a tappet on the typewriter carriage so to act'as denominational selectors of said typewriter carriage.
In said Underwood Hanson machines, as herein. illustrated, each jack is arranged to cause one of-a series of computation racks to I be moved into position where its pin may be .set by means-of the numeral key of the typewriter then depressed. The computation racks and thecomputing mechanism connected thereto'may be of any desired form. A series of these "jacks is shown as arranged in a frame fastened to brackets on the main frame of the typewriter, and a tappet fast on the typewriter carriage is arranged to pass adjacent to said jacks and to raise thenrse'ristint as the typewriter carriage is fed along by the operation of the typewriter :eys. The frame holding these jacks preferably comprises a unitary box member having a rod extending across it, on which red the jacks are pivoted, and inthe front end of said frame there is preferably cut a series of teeth which guide the front ends of said jacks. The rear ends of said jacks are prefe erably guided by a comb which is remorably attached to the rear end of said frame, and the bar of the frame on which said comb rests may be arranged to limit the throw of said jacks. The sides of the frame which holds these jacks may extend upward at the top and be slightly undercut so that a cover may slide. in and be held by said undercuts. Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others. Having thus described my invention, I claim.
'1. In a computing machine, the combina tion with a series of jacks and denominationai selecting rods operated thereby, of a ,i rame in which said acks are pivoted, guhles on the end of the frame for said rods, anda comb forming guides for said jacks adjacent said rod guides.
2. The combination with a series of jacks pivotally mounted to vibrate about an axis, of means for vibrating said jacks, and guiding means engaging the ends of said jacks which are engaged by said vibrating means adapted to confine the movement of said jacks to their normal direction of vibration about their axis.
3. The combination with 21 series ofjachs pivot-ally mounted to vibrate about an axis, of means for vibrating said jacks,-a series of rods, one for each of-said jacks, said jacks contacting freely with their accordant rods, guiding means for said rods, guiding means for said jacks to hold thcin to their planes of vibration, and guiding means for the ends o'f'said jacks contacting with said rods, said last-mentioned guiding means corresponding "with the guiding means for said rods so as to maintain said jacks in register *ith said rods.
4-. The combination with a series of pivotally-mounted jacks adapted to vibrate about a common axis, of means to vibrate said jacks, a series of rods arranged to be actuated by said jacks, there being one of said rods for'each of said jacks said rods and said jacks contacting freely, guiding means engaging the ends of said jacks which are engaged by said vibrating means so as to hold said jacks against movement t 'ansverse to the plane oi? vibration of said jacks by said vibrating means when said vibrating meai'isengages said jacks, guiding means for said rods, and guiding means for the ends of said jacks engaging said rods, said last-mentioned guiding means and the guiding means for said rods being dentated and corresponding one with the other, so that the ends of said jacks contacting with said rods will always be maintained in register with said rods.
